arg! arhg!

okay, i'm using windows xp and i followed all those directions that were posted up earlier. i had winamp3, but i'm not a fan of it at the moment, i gots winamp2.8 back. like i said i followed the directions, but i couldn't figure it out.
a) i'm too tired to realise how i can fix it or
b) there is a problem with the directions somehow

it's really sounding like a few of the people with problems, r having the same one i had.
it all boiled down to me downloading the 3 version, only to go back to the 2.8/other 2 versions.
in my case i was still at the newer skins area and it was those skins for the 3 versions, which weren't working.
someone turned me onto Classic WINAMP.COM Featured Skins.
this completely solved my problem.
although i loved a lot of the 3 version skins, it's the price i pay for using my 2.8.
check it out and see if the skins from this site work for u.
i hope it does!!!!!!!!!!!

all right im no tech expert but DJ EGGs original comments are right on.

Noella21 now that you have dl'd skin/s from the classic site you must realize that even though it is a classic(winamp 2.X skin) the site is still storing them as .wal instead of .wsz so you must still hassel with the changing of the file extensions either by right click, then "save target as", when dl'd or changing there extensions in
C:\Program File\Winamp\Skins for the ones you have already dl'd

I've tried all of your suggestions, however they do not seem to work. I have WinME and Winamp 2.8. I changed the fil extensions to .wsz and the only thing that happens is that they show up as the default skin. I've tried restarting winamp and restarting my computer opening winamp to find the same result. If you have any more tips, it'd be great. I have the same problems with any *.wal file I download. Thank you.

Hmm... thanks for the tip, but it didn't work. A friend suggested I try just updating to Winamp 3... We'll see. Other suggestions still welcome though. Thanks in advance.

try right clicking the download link, and click save target as, and put it in the winamp skins folder and change ending to .wsz thats what worked for me...maybe it will help.

For those people having problems loading skins in winamp 2.xx using WinXP:

Start=>Control Panel=>Appearance&Themes=>Folder Options

Click on "File Types"

Scroll down to ".sz" (should have winamp icon)

Highlight this and you should see button below marked "restore"

Click on "restore" and the winamp icon changes to windows default icon.

DELETE this file extension.

Now go to your c:/program files/winamp/skins directory

For each skin you have downloaded rightclick and RENAME with the correct ".wsz" file extension.

The icon will now change to the winamp icon and the text should change - calling itself "Winamp extension installation file"

The skins will now appear in your skins directory......

Skin will not download

I am having problems downloading new skins for my winamp version 2.81. I recently downloaded Winamp 3 but had problems with it so uninstalled it. Now when I try to download skins they attempt to play in the winamp window like a mp3 would. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I installed Winamp3 and I LOVE the MMD3 skin, but I was getting that damn 'studio error' and Winamp3 was just taking up too much memory and crashing my computer. grrrr

SO, I switched to Winamp2 and none of the skins I download from this site will work. WTF?!

I've downloaded skins from other websites that work fine.

So,uhhh...WTF?

Go to www.wincustomize.com

I found some nice Winamp2 skins there.

The BDE skins are especially rocking my world.

I had loads of probs with installing skins, simillar to the ones here but then realised I was downloading for version 3.0 and not version 2.0.. As far as I know if in the top right corner there's an add for winamp 3 then your browsing winamp 2.0 skins and vice versa. Once I got the correct version I had no problem

I have just read through these posts and I have also been having problems getting skins to work, the only thing is when I download a new skin it shows up as a music type file and I can rename it but not change the file type from .sz to .wsz

Is there anyway of undoing file type assioation?

I have WinME and Winamp2.8 and I had the same problem as several other people here, ie. the .wsz files were displayed in the skins directory but when selected you'd get the base skin. I tried everything else that was said here, but in the end what I found to work was:

* Right click on the .wsz file and choose "Properties".

* If where it says "Opens with:" you have "Unknown application" press "Change" and in the window that opens find Winamp, select it and press "OK".

* The .wsz files will change their icons and you will now be able to use them as skins.

Note that if you renamed .wal files to .wsz they'd still not work.

Well, of course.
.wal = Winamp3 Skins
.wsz = Winamp2 Skins

Winamp3 skins will not work on Winamp2.

Winamp3 skins- only for use on Winamp3 and not Winamp2
Winamp2 skins- work on Winamp2 and worked minimally with Winamp3

Hey, I've not visited this thread for a while . . . but I've gotta say . . . it's a right rivetting read, hehe, lol

Is there anyone out there still having problems?

Remember:

Winamp 2x skins (*.wsz)
http://classic.winamp.com/skins/

Winamp3 skins (*.wal)
http://www.winamp.com/skins/

Winamp3 skins (*.wal) do NOT work on Winamp 2x
so don't even bother trying to rename them to *.wsz

I'm still pretty certain that my first post on page 1 covers every single aspect of all skin problems, except for dermatosis and acne

Okay DJEGG, I did download a bunch of winamp3 skins (like MDD3) as .wal, but Winamp3 didn't recognize them, even though they were .wal!

Skins

well i noticed that when you guys post about the skins, about how you have to type in the .wsz manually, isn't there a way where you you can just fix up the folder options so that when you download a winamp2 skin that it will automatically recognize the .sz file and just put it as .wsz?

How do i get them to load (I have already double clicked on the files and installed them).
