Greatest song of all time?

Its been said (somewhere...)that Stairway To Heaven by Led Zeppelin is the best rock song of all time. Who agrees? I personally think it is, whats your opinion? (that is, if you like rock music)

Currently, IMHO, I believe it is Voodoo and Serano - Overload.

something by wind machine, i'm sure...probably either stonehaven or ocean dance.

unless you don't like wind machine, which is highly probable, because i'm the only one that isn't from boulder, colorado who knows who they are.

in which case...hotel california (the eagles) or let it be (the beatles) or spank-a-lee (herbie hancock).

I love stairway to heaven. It was the first song i learned on my guitar (including the solo). It took me 2 or 3 months to get it right but it was the first song i could play. It's one of my alltime favoroute songs.

But what is the best song of all time? I refuse to answer such a question. It's a rich tapestry of great music. It's not the greatest song of your collection. It's the greatest collection. But that can differ with opinion so it's all down to personal taste. So the greatest collection is a collection filled with music that you love.

Obviously, this thread is old, but here's my pick: Imagine by John Lennon. Maybe it's not the greatest, but it's the most important IMHO.

Stairway to Heaven is the best song of all time (I'm listening to it right now...). It's been voted for time and again.

I just listenewd to it. It's a great song, but lyricly speaking, it can't compete with Imagine.

If you've not heard the song, read the lyrics here.

BTW, I don't care what song is voted best or worst or whatever; I listen to what I like.

That would be the entire second half of Dark Side of the moon. Everything from us & them to eclipse. It's like one big song.

As far as an individual song goes, i'd say Queen - Love of My Life

Yay for ressurecting old threads! I still stand by my vote for stairway. Its not my current favorite, but its still amazing. My favorite right now is much more recent: Radiohead-Talk Show Host.(Romeo and Juliet soundtrack)I love this song.

I'm with Raz, I can't pick out one song as a greatest. The song which I think to be the greatest would probably vary with current mood.

Stairway is good, but it's not one of my faves. Imagine is the most beautiful song ever, really hauntingly good to the point where it can almost ake you cry. As for a rock song Bohemian Rapsody by Queen would have to be up there, a truely great piece of musicianship that works so well. Depending on how you categorise it, Voodoo Chile by Hendrix is me fave blues/rock song, surpassing Bohemian Rapsody.

Seventeen minutes and six seconds of surreal bliss.

I saw a thing on VH1 years ago where hundreds-of-thousands of people in the US voted Bohemian Rhapsody as the best rock song of all time. I've seen other polls with the same outcome, and some which put Stairway To Heaven at the top.

Not many other people would vote for Dogs though...my love of this song is personal, I guess.

I need to have another listen to Animals, never quite got into it (although Dark Side Of The Moon and Wish You Were Here are great albums).

What captured me the first time I heard it, and in fact every time I hear it, is that opening guitar fade-in.....fast but mellow, anxious but still relaxed. From there, what the rest of the song builds to is what is to my ears the perfect song. The very insightful words are just gravy, as the thing could be an instrumental and it would still be my favorite.

"You have to be trusted
by the people that you lie to,
so that when they turn their backs on you,
you'll get the chance to put the knife in..."

- from "Dogs", Roger Waters, 1977

Edit: Oh also...Dogs, like Bohemian Rhapsody, goes through "phases"...it's like you put together several great songs into one.

(OK, for the next three hours, until my edit time runs out for this post, I'll keep thinking of great things to say about this song. )

Yup, my two favorite floyd albums. Well, The Wall is up there too. The thing about stairway is that I turn on the radio and that song is on at least once and hour. I don't like people that think that's the only good zeppelin song.
