last chunk of previous song played on new track

Winamp v5.24
Windows XP Professional

When I'm listening to a song and then stop and play a new song or skip to a new song, the last little chunk of the last song I was playing plays before the new song starts.

Example (hopefully clearer):

I'm playing song A. I decide to skip to track B. A fraction of a second of song A where I stopped plays then track B begins normally.

Why is this and how do I correct it? I'm guessing it may have something to do with buffers, but I don't know what exactly.

I have the same problem with 5.3
You stop a song, then klick on another MP3 and a fraction of the last one is heard. It does not happen when you klick another MP3 while the old song is still playing, then it switches to the new song.

Is this happening with a clean install of 5.3 with no 3rd-party plugins?

ie. are you using Nullsoft in_mp3.dll for mp3 decoding and Nullsoft out_ds.dll for output?

Does the problem occur with all filetypes, or just mp3?

What are your buffer settings in out_ds config?
Prefs > Plugins > Output > DirectSound > Config > Buffering:
Buffer length | Prebuffer | Buffer-ahead on track change

What about the settings in the 'Fading' and 'Other' tabs?
eg. Which Fade options are enabled?
What values are set for them?

What is your soundcard make/model?
What options are enabled in Winamp 5.3 > Prefs > Playback?
Is 'allow 24bit' enabled?

it happens whether i stop a song and go to a new one or click to goto a new one while the other is still playing.

the only 3rd part plugin I have is an EQ, but it was doing this before the EQ was installed. I am using in_mp3.dll and out_ds.dll

it occurs with all filetypes, i believe.

buffer length: 2070ms
pre buffer: 503ms
buffer ahead: 0ms (for gapless audio, i.e. pink floyd)

I don't have any fading options enabled.

I am using Sound Blaster EXTIGY external sound card.

It's not Winamp 5.3, but 5.24
