Exclamation Version 1.32 released (bugfixes and audiobook support)

Hello everybody,
after Will gave me admin rights on SourceForge, the new version 1.32 is now available

Download V1.32 from SourceForge

Although ml_ipod will become obsolete due to Winamp 5.2 and ml_pmp, I still like it because it is more capable (at the moment) and it is open source. That's why I fixed some bugs and introduced a new feature, which is very important for me: Bookmarkable audiobooks and podcasts.

You can easily determine which of your tracks are audiobooks by setting a specific genre. The list of genres that are recognized as audiobooks or podcasts is configurable.

Then, during transfer, ml_ipod automatically sets the necessary flags in the iPod database => the track is bookmarkable (it remembers its playback position) and is skipped during a full shuffle. And the playback position is kept even after a sync or any other transfer with Winamp.

The track still doesn't show up in the main "audiobooks" menu, I could find no flag to make this happen. Seems that Apple only puts their own audiobooks in here (*.m4b), never MP3 files. Well, so what, we can always create a smart playlist that gathers everything with the right genre.

Tell me what you think about this. Bugs should be entered in the SourceForge bugtracker

From the change log:
  • Added support for audiobooks and (rudimentary) podcasts, new options page
"Speech" to configure it. Audiobooks are recognized by genre.
  • Fixed: Bookmarkposition of audiobooks is not zero'ed now
  • New options for autofill (on "Sync settings" page):
    * use autofill query independently of sync query
    * do not delete any files during autofill, only fill the empty space
  • Fixed crash when deleting song from playlist (broken since 1.31)
  • Fixed crash when opening smart playlist query editor (broken since 1.31)
  • Fixed unwanted confirmation box on first transfer
  • Fixed "Check Songs on iPod" (needed several runs if some files were missing on iPod)
-Achim

Thanks for the update, Achim. It is nice to be able to use the Smart Playlist editor again with my iPod.

One question: How can the bookmark function be used with podcasts? I have listened to a podcast, paused it, played a different file, went back to the podcast (that I assume is bookmarked with the pause) and hit the play button, which started the file at the beginning, not the place where I paused the track. I may have misunderstood something about how this is supposed to work.

Thanks again!

[Edit] I've since tried it out some more and bookmarking works with some of the genres on the Audiobooks Support tab, but not all of them. I guess I'll have to play with it a bit more and try and figure out the limitations.

Thanks for the update and bugfixes! I'll be using the partial autofill quite a bit.

Hi lifer,
this is quite strange. Are you sure you have EXACTLY the right genres in the list? No blanks at the end of line.. And comparison is case sensitive, so Audiobook != AudioBook.

And one more thing, blank lines will cause the parser to stop, so simply put one genre per line. I have 5 genres in that list, and it seems to work pretty well.

Did that information help?

Yeah, this is exactly how it is supposed to work, and definitely it works that way on my Nano. Again: Is the genre correctly spelled? Blanks? Case?

One bad thing about the iPod hits me often: I'm in the middle of a long podcast (I have some of them that take an hour or so). I stp somewhere in the middle. Later I listen to another one, and then I hit the "left" button on the touchwheel to jump to the previous track. Bang, I'm at postion 0 again, and no way back to where I came from. But that's the same with iTunes audiobooks, has nothing to do with ml_ipod. Personally I think they should prevent jumping to the beginning with "left" if the track is bookmarkable. I wonder if anybody at Apple would listen if we asked for that?

What works for me is to start a podcast/audiobook always from the playlist view, and never jump between the tracks with "left" or "right". So, to stop listening to an audiobook, I pause and then go back to the playlist (with the menu button), select the other book or podcast, and hit "play". When later coming back the same way I'm at the old playback position where I left off

Thanks again, Achim.

I found the problem (if it can be called that). Although I updated the genre on the files of the podcasts on my PC, the updated files didn't get copied over to my iPod when I synched. Therefore the files on my iPod didn't have the correct genre label and didn't bookmark the way they should have. I guess I'll have to make sure that I change the genre on all my podcasts before synchronizing or do it directly on my iPod itself.

Nice plugin update, btw!

THANK GOD AND ABU!!!! I was about to shoot my computer trying to use that so-called "ipod interface" the Winamp 5.2 came with. After using Mlipod for a couple years, there's just no comprimise.

You're right. A quick look into the code: The screen dimensions are hardcoded

Could you enter that into the bug system, please? Go to

Exclamation New release 1.33 alpha 1

Not even a month, and we have another release. Well, it's not a release yet, just alpha state. But whoever is interested in testing the new features, it is available now:

http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...ease_id=417352

The change log is quite long already:
  • New: On-The-Go playlists finally work, saved OTG playlists are
converted into regular playlists with name "On-The-Go 1"...
  • New: Hotkey Ctrl-E to edit items
  • New: Show progress in statusbar when deleting a bunch of files
  • New: Podcast sync button (adds/removes only podcasts)
  • New: Support for 'Comment' field in tracks
  • New: Can handle databases written by "AnaPod Explorer"
  • New: Faster browsing on the iPod because of creation of
sorted index lists (as iTunes does it)
  • New: Option to fix corrupt timestamps in ML and iPod
  • New: syncs changed genre during smartsync
  • New: Hotkey "copy currently playing song to iPod"
  • New: <disc> tag for reverse sync
  • Fixed: Crash when iTunesDB and mlipodSmartPlaylists do not fit together
  • Fixed: better coexistence with iTunes, does not destroy iTunes
    settings for specific songs
  • Fixed: AlbumArt that is loaded with iTunes or Anapod will be
visible on iPod even after transfering songs with ml_ipod
(but still ml_ipod does NOT download any album art itself)
  • Fixed: RefreshAll smart playlists button works again
  • Fixed: Last played timestamps were garbeled
  • Fixed: Smart sync ratings sometimes used wrong timestamps
  • Fixed: timezone handling (daylight time)
  • Fixed #1242625: Aborting "remove playlist and files" works now
  • Fixed #1426680: Ratings that are set to 0 on iPod are now sync'ed
  • Fixed #1195852: SmartSync ratings does no longer depend on the songs
being completely played on iPod (rating is synced even if
    lastplaytime has not changed)
Enjoy!

@Wizard of OS: Your issue should be fixed in that version, too

Why doesn't version 1.33 sync my playlists? I have the setting selected in "General sync settings" under "ipod config" but no playlists were transferred to my ipod. I had to manually send all my playlists to the ipod. I even tried reformatting.

Also, I created a smart playlist called "Favorites not recently heard" with the query "rating >3 and (lastplay < [2 weeks ago] )". This results in 45 songs in my ML and on the ipod in Winamp but when I disconnect my ipod, the playlist shows 863 songs in that playlist and it doesn't change after a song is played, even though the query depends on the lastplayed value. When I reconnect the ipod to my PC, winamp shows only 45 songs in the smart playlist again.

Thanks

Solved this one... even though this query works in winamp, the ipod doesn't like the extra "( )" brackets around the second part of the query.

The query "rating >3 and lastplay < [2 weeks ago]" works as it should.

I had a look into the code. As far as I can see, this feature has never worked??? There is a dot missing in a string comparison ("m3u" instead of ".m3u"), so no playlists are found. I fixed that for the next version. It works now for me.

But anyway, it only syncs static playlists, no smart views. That's how the code is at the moment.

Sync of smart views <-> smart playlists is not available

Your other issue is strange, 'cause ml_ipod uses the Winamp query engine, it only passes the query string. So there should be no difference between a query for a smart view and the one for an iPod smart playlist. UNLESS you checked the "Smart Playlist Live Updating".
Oh well, after reading your post again, I guess this is what you're using, 'cause you want to have it updated on the iPod without connection to the PC.

I think that live updating just does not work reliably, I tried it once and it did not work, so I stopped it.
Is anybody using this "live updating" successfully?

Thanks Abu, I'll give it a try.

BTW, I am using the "update live playlist" feature and it seems to be working on the ipod. But, the ipod for some reason does not like extra brackets in the query created by the winamp query engine. I have experimented with this a bit and that is the only conclusion I have found so far. Therefore, to get live updating to work, all I have done is remove extra brackets from the query statement.

Thanks again for your work on this excellent plugin.

Have anyone of you guys tried upgrading to winamp 5.22? Every upgrade of winamp seems to mess up ml_ipod, so i'm a bit concerned that this will happen this time too.

And I agree with kaatinthehaat, syncing smart views with smart playlists would have been great

5.22 will not work with ml_ipod because it has ipod support built right into it, I believe.

I tried upgrading, and seemingly everything worked fine. I haven't testet the new version too much yet, but atleast it didn't screw up my ipod upon connecting it to the computer. Syncing also seems to work like before.
5.22 comes with the pmp_ipod-plugin, just like v5.21, and as long as you uncheck it during install that doesn't cause any trouble.

Good to hear. I have not upgraded to 5.22 yet, and I'm working heavily on the 1.33 release of ml_ipod. The plugin is quite old already, and I took over maintenance just a few weeks ago. And there are quite a few things to fix (memory leaks...), so I don't have the time to look at 5.22. I would be glad to hear if 5.22 works for everyone with ml_ipod 1.32 or 1.33a4 (available now).

Can't reproduce that, works for me with "Eject" in Winamp, "Eject" in Explorer, and simply disconnecting. I never see that box...
Could it be that some other program is using your iPod, simply an explorer window, ...?

I'm getting the same error (on v1.33a4) as kaatinthehaat. The iPod goes to the menu right after that error pops up. Nothing else is running in the background that is using it.

Quite strange, why doesn't it happen for me??? I have a 4GB nano, but I don't think that there is any difference in that.

Any idea how I could reproduce that? I'd really like to fix it but I have to see it first to find out what's wrong...

When it happens to me, all I usually do is upload a few albums then hit Eject in the ML. To test it, I just tried ejecting it without previously uploading anything and it worked fine. Next, I uploaded about 150 songs then hit Eject and the error popped up.

Thanks, that was a helpful hint. I got it one time now myself with 1.33a4, but the next try all went well again.
With my current working copy 1.33a5 I could not reproduce it. Could you please give it a try, perhaps it just disappeared in the process of coding... There was a lot of refactoring going on over the last days.

Hey Abu.

Thanks for the update.

I'm happy to report there is no more error message so far.

Podcasts are working nicely using "Juice" - great podcast program BTW.

Another issue: With the autofill feature for the Shuffle, it would be nice if there were some kind of progress indicator prior to the actual transfer (which has the usual indicator). There is a long lag before the transfer occurs with no information as to what is happening.

Thanks again

Ok so I finally finished updating all my music on my computer. Yes in an OCD fashion with every track with correct ID3 tags and album art. I'm sick of iTunes, as pretty much everyone is. I have tried ehpod, but that screwed up 3...yes count them...3 ipods. So no more ever again on that program. I have downloaded iPod Access, which is supposed to allow you to update your iTunes library so it doesn't delete your new songs on your iPod...I'm still messing with that.

Now on to this iPod plugin. I have a 60GB Video iPod. I am using Winamp 5.22 Pro with the 1.33a6 plugin.

I'm basically going to make a list and test this plugin for the 5G's.

Pro's
---------------------------------------------------------------
*Formatting the iPod through Winamp worked perfectly.
*Adding 10 Songs at roughly 4500 kb/s worked perfectly.
*Adding 1000 Songs at roughly 5800 kb/s had one transfer error, but that is due to one of my songs being corrupt (iTunes wouldn't load it either. Loaded screen shot) so that worked good.
*Listening to Winamp while transfering songs to the iPod worked perfectly.
*Copying 10 songs from iPod to hard drive worked perfectly.
*Copying 1000 songs from iPod to hard drive worked perfectly.
*Syncing the rating between Winamp and the iPod worked perfectly.
*Syncing last played between Winamp and the iPod worked perfectly.
*Ejecting the iPod worked perfectly.
*Re-connecting the iPod while Winamp was still opened and Winamp recognized the iPod perfectly.
*Creating a new playlist through Winamp for the iPod worked perfectly.
*Adding songs to the playlist worked perfectly.

Con's
---------------------------------------------------------------
*Couldn't load any movies (.mp4) to the iPod. The screen just said it was transfering. You could click the done button and nothing would happen. (I really hope this is fixed)
*When I pushed Autofill, it caused Winamp to shut down.

Neither
---------------------------------------------------------------
*I wish you could just load an already formed playlist from your hard drive to your iPod.
*I don't use podcasts so I didn't test those.
*I don't use audio books either.

If there is anything more you'd like me to test with my iPod just let me know. Or any screen shots.

Thanks for the great plugin.

Hi, Amaiznblue50,
thanks for your report. A lot of Pro's, great

Hopefully I fixed it now. There is a new alpha 7 ready for download. Could you please test it and report again?

Strange, that works for me. Give it another try with the new release, please. Does it crash right after pressing the button, or after some seconds, or during transfer?

What exactly do you want to do? You have an M3U playlist soewhere (not in Winamp) and want to transfer that? You can always import it into Winamp, and then send to iPod (SendTo menu).
Be sure to use the SendTo menu on the playlist in teh left pane (the tree view). SendTo in the list of playlist (right pane) is broken, but that's not ml_ipod's fault.
If that is not what you want, please tell me more.

Hope you stick with our plugin, and like it.

Actually, NULLSOFT fixed it in 5.22. That's what I just saw. But you need 1.33alpha8 to make it all work...
