Try this some time. I wish I had it on video. When you are in a boat and there are sea gulls around, go about 5kts and start tossing the flying rats large marshmallows. They love em. So much that they get too enthusiastic. They usually skewer the marshmallow with their beak. They get a little stuck. This is usually enough to make them crash. It doesn't hurt em, but it is funny.

Well, they at least know quality gear. DW percussion and Fender amps from the gray-silver-front old-school day are deserving of respect.

I flagged the video for animal abuse, which is one of YouTube's reasons to flag a video.

If you have problems with them, do what it takes to keep them out, not what it takes to kill them. They don't kill us for being around. I fully understand hunting for the purpose of acquiring food, but I don't understand, nor do I agree with killing just for fun or for getting rid of "nuisance" animals. If they're doing what they can to get food or shelter, and you're killing them, you're the nuisance, not them. If you have to, just find a way to keep them both away and out.

I used to live in South Dakota, which is pretty much an extension of Wyoming, where this was filmed. I'm sad to say that this is in no way unique, and quite common out there, and serves no purpose. These animals aren't even a nuisance in any way, nor are they even eaten by the shooters.

You want to shoot something for fun? Find something inanimate. Otherwise you're just an asshole deserving of what you dish out.

Don't forget to live before you die.

I'm sorry Ted. I think you take this wrong. Prairie dogs dig freaking holes. The cattle fall in them and break legs. Then you end up having to shoot cattle and horses. I have personally assassinated thousands of the little bastards. There is absolutely no way to hunt them to extinction. If they take hold some place, it will take years and bricks of .22 shells to eradicate a nest.

Poison is more effective, but then you run the risk of destroying other wildlife. It isn't common for people to shoot coyote any more. They help keep the rodents down too.

These redneck bubbas might seem like they are being cruel or misdirected, but they are really taking care of the problem in the most humane way possible.

I'll tell ya one thing... you can shoot and shoot and shoot these little bastards and then you'll come back tomorrow and shoot some more. When you have to cap horses or cattle (I've also done that) you'll have a 6 pack and pop prairie dogs after work. It's a public service.

The best ammo in a .22 is Remington Yellow Jackets. They never knew what hit them.

It may look cute, but basically it's a rat. Population control by firearms, without poison, is the most responsible choice. If you've seen one of their mounds with a 100,000 residents you'd know what I'm talking about. I remember one mound I used to shoot at. It took ten years of shooting to kill it. Being "shot out" I'm sure it's back by now.

Personally, I know they killed 4 cattle and 2 horses. It was worse than that though. At least 10X worse.

It appears to me that these fellas extracted the prairie dogs from their existence without the rat knowing what hit it. That is also humane. I would have to laud these gentlemen for taking carefully placed shots.

I know I felt bad if I ever did not kill them instantly. I like one shot.. one kill.... never knew what hit them. I doubt getting hit with .223 Rem and using good technique, that any of the animals killed felt any pain.

If you had a rodent problem in your house, you'd probably deploy the standard poison, which is warfarin. That's freaking mean. A slow painful death. Personally, I'd much rather get shot. Warfarin is a blood thinner and basically you slowly die because your blood doesn't clot any more. That's got to be miserable.

Taking a bad shot and wounding a rat makes you feel bad. Nobody had anything personally against the prairie rat.

I'm still in contact with a lot of cattle ranchers in SD. They have several "sections" each (each section is a square mile of land, or 640 acres). They have never told me that they are killing cattle because of prairie dog holes. If they were, there would be just about no cattle left, because the holes are too numerous. The cattle know about the holes. They step around them. They're somewhat stupid, but not that bad.

Read this article. It'll explain the truth of the matter, which is quite a contrast from the myths.

It includes:
Quote:
Among the threats posed by the species, many ranchers claim, is that cows and horses break their legs in prairie dog holes. But that's nonsense, says researcher Larry Rittenhouse of Colorado State University. "It would be almost impossible for a cow to break its leg on a prairie dog hole," he says. "I study these animals' behavior, and they are extremely adept at placing their feet. In my 50 years around cattle and horses, I don't personally know of a single incident where a horse or a cow has been injured in a prairie dog hole."

This is remeniscent of the fox hunting debate that has been raging for years over here.
Fox hunting in England is mainly for social prestige(you need to be rich to go hunting), rather than a bunch of rednecks who enjoys killing things, but the justifications for doing it are always the same. No one ever admits to why they really do it.
I'm not so much against hunting, it's all the hypocrisy that goes with it pisses me off.

RoH mentioned how difficult it is to eradicate this sort of pest and it has led to the argument that there's no point trying.
Foxes adjust their birthrate to the food available in the area, so as soon as there is a drop in population the birthrate rises to fill the gap.

Rabbit hunting has never been frowned on though, probably because it was for the pot.

I do and it's not onesy... twoesy... There may be a place where they aren't a livestock hazard, but that's probably because people have been shooting them.

There are a hell of a lot of places where prairie dogs thrive. It's usually only after you have to kill your horse that you go down to the tavern and draw people a map.

And tasty too. There is one more varmint on the ranch that needs shooting. That's the inedible wormy jackrabbit. They are a rabies epidemic. If you run into a good cottontail, that's just lunch. If you ever ran into a rabid coyote because he was eating rabid rabbits you'd see my point. A good dog will probably take care of the problem for you, but they'll get tore up. A non-rabid coyote will not ever meet your dog.

In general, a laudable attitude toward hunting.

Quote:

Eradication isn't the issue. Otherwise you'd just use poison. No one wants to kill every single prairie dog. You just need to limit their numbers. A few of them in a hole doesn't usually draw attention. It's when they take over a couple acres that people pay attention.

You're in New York. It's not like you guys don't take care of a rat problem. But perhaps you are right. I think the ranchers would quit shooting the prairie dogs if you quit poisoning rats and get rid of all your cats. I think they'd pretty much get a chuckle out of that.

I grew up in rural Oregon. They are some things you shoot that you don't eat. Prairie dogs in great numbers are on the list. Jackrabbits, rats, possum, nutria, aggressive bobcat and raccoon. Rabid anything. Mangy looking anything. Starlings. Oh Jesus. The English imported these little bastards because they thought they were cute. They are. Finding no natural enemies here in Oregon, they are like 4 ounce locusts.

Rule of thumb. Too many of anything is a bad thing.
