What are the pros and cons of ripping using Sonic Engine?

(Background) I've been doing some ripping and reorganizing of my CD collection to load on to my new Karma, and I've come across an issue with the Sonic engine where there are no (or very short) gaps between tracks. For example, on The Beatles - 1, the last 30-40 seconds of Let It Be get tacked on to the beginning of The Long and Winding Road. There also tend to be discrepancies in the track time showing in the playlist and the track time displayed in the display. This even happens when playing the CD directly. I experimented (and managed to eventually confirm by using the solution as search terms since early searches weren't as fruitful) and found that unchecking the Sonic Engine option in in_cdda makes the problem go away.

Now for the meat of my question... Am I losing anything significant by not using the Sonic Engine? What exactly (from a ripping perspective) does it do? My ripping speed seemed to slightly decrease (from averaging 10.8 X-ish to averaging 10.0 X). If that's the only hit, I'll gladly take it to get accurate ripping. Is there anything else Sonic does which isn't obvious?

Why didn't anybody ever answer this question?

What the hell is this Sonic Engine? I had to disable it so that I could play normal CDs in Winamp.

Why do you dig up old threads?

and just to set you straight-- ain't nobody here that gets paid to do tech support, this is btw the discussion part of this forum.

So if nobody answers this, or it was left alone to die because the threadstarter openend a simular question in tech support than please leave it alone.

Each Thursday a new show on Celtica Radio with Darkwave music.
