5.1 output for lossy formats

I note that JetAudio, MediaMonkey, Foobar and several other players produce full 5,1 output for all formats, whereas Winamp does it only for lossless formats. It doesn't matter whether the DirectX or Wave output option is chosen. If the format is lossless (FLAC, WAVE, etc.), then full 5.1 upmixing occurs; if not, it doesn't. This leaves lossy formats sounding ... well, one-dimensional. I am sure I read somewhere that Winamp provides 5.1 output for MP3 files, but in my experience, using various different systems and set-ups, this is simply not the case. It is one of the few niggling faults of an otherwise high-quality player.

There is one other major niggle, which I shall post separately.
