why two winamp scratch files?

winamp has two scratch files that persist of the playlist as i understand it, even if winamp closes unexpectedly and reopens on reboot:

Winamp.m3u

and

winamp.m3u8

located in C:\Documents and Settings\SYF\Application Data\Winamp

but whats the difference between them? which one is actually used in practice?

i am thinking these might be a passable solution to my autoplay post, but i'm confused as to why there's 2.

winamp.m3u is the original playlist Winamp saved so it could be restored the next time it starts.

winamp.m3u8 was added quite a few years back and is now used as the master playlist to restore on startup since it supports extended characters (is utf-8 encoded compared to ansi).

so now winamp.m3u is still created as a way to not break older plug-ins / apps which expect only winamp.m3u for them to do whatever it is they want to do on it.

so if there's no extended characters in your files then the two playlists should be the same, but it's just easier for Winamp to output both files to ensure compatibility no matter else might happen.
