winamp responds slow to song changes

When using the Local Media section of Winamp instead of smaller Playlists, the player has begun to respond extremely slow to song choices. Whether I click the "Forward/Next" button, or scroll through and click on an actual title, it will take several seconds before it switches to that song and it just hangs almost as though it's locked up until it loads. Is there a way to speed up the player so that it can handle a good several thousand mp3s?
