8-year-old girl raped and buried alive.

LAKE WORTH, Fla. May 23, 2005 — An 8-year-old girl who was raped and buried alive told a friend she remembers her attacker towering over her before she passed out, then awoke seven hours later beneath a pile of rocks and concrete blocks when she heard the voices of rescuers.

The girl, who had been staying overnight at her godmother's house, was reported missing early Sunday. She was hospitalized in good condition Monday and a teenage boy who also had been staying at the home was arrested. Authorities said he confessed.

"She said the last thing she remembers is that he looked over her with these big eyes and then she said she went to sleep. She said she was waiting for us to find her," said 18-year-old Danielle Holloman, a family friend who calls the girl her sister.

"She said she knew we would come get her. That's why as soon as the police came, she wiggled her fingers," Holloman said Monday.

The girl was found Sunday morning when police Sgt. Mike Hall climbed into a 25-foot long trash bin, opened the lid to a 30-gallon recycling container and saw part of the girl's hand and foot peeking out from under heavy concrete slabs, said police Sgt. Dan Boland.

He said rescuers feared the worst, but their mood turned jubilant when they realized she was alive.

"There's no doubt in my mind that this child would have been dead if he didn't find her. She was dehydrated and in rough shape with pieces of cement blocks on top of her and she was face down," Boland said. "There was no way for her to get out on her own."

She had been sexually assaulted, authorities said.

Her disappearance rattled a state that had been outraged over the arrests of sex offenders in the separate killings earlier this year of 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford and 13-year-old Sarah Lunde.

"When a child is abducted and abandoned like this, the critical thing is time," Police Chief William Smith said.

"That we found this child alive is a miracle."

The 8-year-old had been staying overnight at her godmother's house. After police found her, the girl named her attacker and described him. The teenage boy she named, a friend who was staying in the home, was arrested.

Thank-God she will have a second chance at life.

Milagro Cunningham, 17, who had been staying at the house of the girl's godmother, was charged with attempted murder, sexual battery on a child under 12, and false imprisonment of a victim under 13 years old, police said. He was charged as an adult.

Investigators saw inconsistencies in Cunningham's story and kept him close at hand, authorities said.

Smith said it was clear from where the girl was found that her attacker did not expect her to survive.

A fence with a locked gate surrounds the landfill, closed more than a decade ago, Boland said. But the fence has holes in it, he said.

"We believe it was a sexual assault and possible attempted murder," FBI Special Agent Mike Driscoll said. "He intended to leave her there, and she wasn't going to get out of the situation.

What the fuck is going on in Florida and the Nation?

What we need here is some Street Justice.

How about a good ol' stoning. Bury him halfway in the ground

and let the public come out and throw rocks at his head.

I just hope that the little girl and her family get the counseling and support they're going to need in the coming months/years.

WEST PALM BEACH — A jury Thursday rejected the insanity defense of a young man who beat and raped an 8-year-old girl, then left her to die beneath 197 pounds of rocks in a trash bin.

Jurors instead convicted Milagro Cunningham, 21, of attempted second-degree murder, kidnapping and aggravated child abuse, as well as three counts of sexual battery for the various ways he violated the girl.

Right after the crime, was charged with attempted first-degree murder, kidnapping, aggravated child abuse and a variety of sexual battery charges.

Cunningham faces up to life in prison when he's sentenced May 19 by Circuit Judge Charles Burton.

The girl, now 12, telephoned her mother in court moments before the verdict came in. Afterward, Machele Humose said she could now "let her know it's finally over."

In 2005, the depravity of the crime and the girl's survival made national headlines.

She was found stuffed in a large yellow recycling bin, head down, wearing nothing but a shirt, with only a hand and foot sticking out of the pile of rocks.

Two of the law enforcement officers involved in her rescue, Special Agent Mike Driscoll of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and Palm Beach County sheriff's Detective Lorenzo Gatti, were present for the verdict.

"It's something none of us will ever forget," Driscoll said. "To pull that little girl out of that trash can and save her life ... then convict this guy."

Gatti pointed out the way Cunningham led the search for the girl east and protested whenever they turned to the west. So Gatti called the search leader and turned them west. The recycling bin was in the middle of a desolate landfill.

"It's a miracle," Gatti said. "The doctors said she would have died in 10 or 15 more minutes."

                      -----------------------------------------------

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- A man who raped a Lake Worth girl and left her for dead in a trash bin was formally sentenced Tuesday.

Milagro Cunningham, 21, received four life sentences, two of which will be served consecutively, plus 45 years for the rape, kidnapping and attempted murder of an 8-year-old girl in May 2005.

A jury convicted Cunningham of kidnapping, sexual battery, aggravated child abuse and attempted second-degree murder last month.

"I'm just so happy," the victim's mother, Machele Humose, said. "He's going to spend the rest of his life in jail, and that's what he deserves. No one should ever do a child like that."

Four years ago, Humose's daughter disappeared. Cunningham, who was living with the girl's godmother, said a white man snatched the girl overnight.

The 8-year-old girl was later found, barely breathing, under 197 pounds of concrete blocks in May 2005.

She survived, and Humose said her daughter is doing fairly well.

"She's got to deal with this for the rest of her life, and the kids aren't making it easy for her," Humose said. "But she's strong. She's a very strong girl."

Cunningham's lawyer tried to convince the jury that he had autism and was mentally ill at the time of the crime, seeking leniency.

But the judge said it was too risky to let someone like Cunningham out in society again to possibly hurt another child.

"Now he has a lot of time to sit and think of what he did," Humose said.

It's one of a few reasons I didn't become a cop. That and modern Crown Vickies where you couldn't accidentally forget you left the baby raper handcuffed to the patrol car when you left.
