When it's done legally, it's art. When it's done illegally, it's vandalism.

Aye-aye. Do it on property you own, and it's fine...

A very close Japanese friend I knew a while ago once said to me "Watashi no koto wo oboeta, onegai shimasu...Yakusoku?"

I forgot his name though...

I think graffiti is great. It is never bandalism, although it is sometimes vandalism.

Some of it is vandalism, when it's pointless things like "Randy Loves Sheila", or something like that. But if it's something that someone took the time to plan out, find the best spot for everyone to see it, find the right colors and actually take the time to make it right PLUS avoiding the police, then yes, it is an artform.

there's a store nearby my place that allows people to put up graffitti on two of it's outside walls as long as there's no gang related stuff on it, and damn, there's some good art on it. and the building's owner actually pays some of the kids to paint over their old stuff to allow for new art. pretty awesome community involvement if you ask me.

That is a fantatstic idea. If more companies decided to do this, there would be a lot less vandalism in this country, as the TRUE street artists would be able to express themselves freely and not have to be burdened by the police.

Yeah, but a lot of the vandals do it because of the risk involved.

I must agree with everyone else, it can be a true artform, but it must be planed out and not be offensive and whatnot. I do like some of the graphitie I have seen in pics and whatnot, it has a good style to it.

All of it is Art using the broad definition of the word as "Human Expression" However, it is mostly an ill concieved, juvenile artform with rare exceptions.

The line between grafitti as already mentioned is a legal one- even if the Ghost of Da Vinci painted Mona Lisa II on the side of a convenience store, because of property rights it is grafitti.

I would also like to say that Grafitti in the Palm Pilot sense of the word is responsible for a huge degredation of quality in my real writing.

I've been a sprayer myself while I was still living in Berlin (I was 13-15 back then) because the Graffiti subculture was huge at that moment, everyone in my school did (or at least tried) it.
I got to know a lot of people who were extremely good at it and even did it for a living, once I even worked with a guy to spray the walls in the entrance of a small club (I've never seen my money for it though anyway, it was fun and they at least payed for the cans) I was never great in it but with some teaching I aquired some minor skills, at least I can tell good from bad Of course there is more than 90% crap out there but when you see some really talented people doing their work, you see that it really is a form of art. However, you always have to differentiate beween things like this:

not a very good example, didn't have time to search much but you know what I mean
and like this:

It depends..some Graffiti is very beautiful, like the ones that are in different colors, but the ones where its just like a signature in one color..it looks like crap.

That's exactly my reasoning. If it's something meaningful, like say a Memorial to someone or something, that is thought provoking and enthralling, then yes, it is art. However, if it's nothing more than someone's lousy signature, only there to say, "Hey! I can work a spray can!Lookie at me!" Then yes, that is vandalism, and totally uncalled for. All of those so-called "Street Artists" who only tag with their initials aren't really artistic at all, either, just low life vandals. There's my say in this--again. :

Hmmm, I might consider that. Usually my pics are about news event but then again, an art picture once in a while wouldn't be that bad. But it's hard to find good graffiti art online because most people fear charges and want to remain anonymus...still a good idea, in case you find something worthy posting, PM me

In downtown Vancouver (Canada that is, not Washington) there are some very skilled artists who use graffiti spray paint on actual canvas, and can make some pretty kickass pictures that are better than painting quality. Also, down on Granville Island (Market and Arts Area) there are some places where graffiti artists are allowed (as long as they are doing real art, not just tagging)

I agree with most of you in saying that if it is real art then its all right (even going so far as to make a place look better), but tagging is a pointless waste of time.

graffitti art is art.
tagging is vandalism. and stupid, at that.

there's a big graffitti mural here (sanctioned by the council) just round the corner from me.
