Donations sought for medical treatment for abused dog
A 10-year-old dog that was removed from a Belle Glade home last week after officials say her owner cut her leg off with a hand saw is still recovering at Palm Beach County's animal shelter.
![]() The dog, who has been named Karma, underwent surgery last week to close the wound and remove her severely-infected uterus. Animal Control Capt. David Walesky said the pit-bull-type mix may need to see an orthopedic specialist to remove part of the remaining bone. The surgery can be costly, and the county's shelter typically doesn't have funds to pay for specialized procedures. Animal control was called to the house in the 600 block of Southwest Avenue C by the sheriff's office, which was investigating a shooting at the residence. In all, the county removed seven adult dogs and four puppies from the home. Animal control says it plans to seek custody of the animals, and eventually put them up for adoption. Karma has shown signs of aggression towards other pets, and will need to be placed in a home that will be able to work with her. ![]() Luc Jean Baptiste, 48, of Belle Glade was charged with felony animal cruelty after a witness said he duct-taped the dog's mouth shut, hog-tied her, and sawed through her right front leg. The witness told animal control officers that Baptiste removed the leg because the dog had injured it, officials said. "She is not a puppy," Walesky said. "She is older, and she is that way. It will be difficult to work with. We are looking for the right person to do that." Animal control is accepting donations for Karma's care through its Miracle Pet Program. Checks can be mailed to: PBC Animal Care and Control, ATTN: Customer Service, 7100 Belvedere Road, West Palm Beach, FL 33411. For more on the donation program information, call (561) 233-1222. http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/do...g-2292437.html |

Shoot the dog and shoot the asshole that did it. Not necessarily in that order.
>. It will be difficult to work with. Yeah, and that's why you don't do it. Thousands of dogs that aren't a basket case are gonna be killed today. Someone can make a point (and a salary) for advocating that we rehabilitate the most unreasonable dogs. There is such a thing as too late. I am the best dog person I know. My dogs are not afraid. I can deprogram some abuse they have taken. I can't make a dog some felon sawed the leg off into a decent pooch. And I'm pretty good. BB took a pretty good thrashing. If it had gone further, she would have been irreparably mean. If you don't think a Spitz mutt with double incisors, weighing in at 64 lbs, could really ruin your day......... Thanks, webthing...It'll be a very small donation because I had huge Vet Bills recently(and it still didn't help, but at least least I know I tried.) The Times has an article about Vet costs and what do we do...etc
But there are a lot of happy three legged doggies... The Link below to NYT http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate...it_th_20120410 |

Not any happy three legged dogs that are this abused. This is ASPCA people being stupid. It seems to work, as they have been able to illicit donations for something that shouldn't be done.
I'm sure they put down some reclaimable dog to make room for this one they can use for a poster child. I am all in favor of rescuing dogs, but abuse can go too far. I can get them over being starved, neglected, a little beaten..... but they can be beyond repair.... Sometimes you just can't unscramble eggs. Unless you can find a dog like this permanent residence at Cesar Milans dog farm for the interminably dangerous, this is just idiotic. It's amazing what people will do for donations. 25 million kids in this country went to bed without something to eat last night. My money goes to the food bank. Not for rehabilitating drug dealers dogs. Am I accusing these animal people of pasting a dog back together just to gain sympathy and contributions? Yes! And it's cruel. I am speaking as someone who took on a dog like this. Despite TV bullshit, sometimes they are just beyond fixing. When someone hacks their leg off with a hand saw, I'd take that as a clue. If we weren't destroying thousands of perfectly good dogs every day, I might have a different opinion. How many dogs did they kill to keep this one alive? And it's ten years old. How many thousand do we spend? This dog is old, and with one foot in the grave. Drop a bag of kibble off at the dog shelter. You'd be doing a lot more good. It isn't sensational or a made for TV movie. You could save two dozen dogs for the price of this one. Frankly, if any of my own dogs were this beat up and sick, I'd have them put down. Global Movies and TV God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to hide the bodies of people who pissed me off. |

^ I'm not trying to be difficult, but just beacuse one gives to any animals orgs, doesn't mean that they don't give to Food Banks, Clothes Drives, and other People Needs. But I agree that some animals are best put to sleep humanely, if they cannot be physically or mentally rehabilated. That is also true if it cost other doggies or kittys their lives.

I'm getting really tired of stunts people pull to look compassionate.
My local dog shelter gets a lot of flack for being a "kill" shelter. I'm wondering what dogs they are killing because the ones the get put of for adoption and that "second chance" usually suck. It took me 6 months to get Daisy out of them. She was kinda beat up too. If she were any more thrashed, it would have been a no deal. I had to smooze the ladies at the pound to get her. You got Cesar Milan running his Island for misfit dogs.... with signs up telling you not to make eye contact... or the SOB's will kill you.... Let's get real. Outside of my gentle tutelage, BB or Daisy would have turned flat dangerous. Both were well on the way when I stopped them. In Daisy's case, the pound people were obviously good to her. It helped. I had a Golden Retriever that I lost for 2 years. He was about 5. I think he got stolen and dumped. He found his way home 2 years later. Found him in the back of my truck at the grocery. I was so happy to see him.... but it didn't stay that way..... I did let him lead the rest of his normal life, but it probably was a mistake. He went wild while he was gone. Then he tore the shit out of my brother in law for no particular reason. You couldn't trust him anymore. I ended up hosting a wild animal. I tried to fix him, but sometimes you just can't unscramble eggs. If I had been thinking with my head instead of my heart, I could have saved my brother in law 150 stitches. He would have tore me up too, but he wasn't up to fighting me. Luckily it was my brother in law or I'd probably still be paying. He was such a good boy before he went missing. Then you have a dog you can't let around kids, other dogs, other people or take anywhere. He lived in his kennel. I felt like a warden.I don't think Brody was any happier than I was. The other one was Sasha, a big dobie bitch. She just went bad after she had a couple litters of pups. I made the mistake of thinking.... well hell... one more litter... she's good stock..... Then one day, she made me shoot her. Getting loose and killing the neighbor.... no choice.... she would have killed him too... she got that dobie brain swelling shit.... She tore a whole section of 7' cyclone fence out to get loose. Because I was breeding responsibly, that wasn't passed on to any of her pups. ![]() This all leaves me with a more pragmatic attitude about canines. They are wonderful if they have a good people. Alone, lacking socialization, or having been abused.... there is a point of no return. I'd say all of the dogs I saw at the pound last time were a project. Impossible is the word for half of them. There was one. A 2 year old Pit Bull. She'll be fine if she gets some decent people. She must have had someone pretty decent before and got lost. http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/22604451 And you can't go wrong with her name This is where my pragmatism takes over again. One dog is enough. Somebody adopt this girl before I do.

Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control officials said they will likely be able to save the leg of a 10-year-old dog removed from a Belle Glade home this month after officials say her owner cut off its foot with a hand saw.
The dog, who has been named Karma, is being treated at the county's shelter on Belvedere Road. Elizabeth Harfmann, animal control's community outreach coordinator, said the shelter's veterinarian is hopeful officials will be able to save Karma's leg. Shelter workers had feared Karma's entire leg would have to be amputated as a result of the injury. "The staff veterinarian who has been treating feels we will be able to save the entire leg and that a full amputation may not be necessary," Harfmann wrote in an email to The Palm Beach Post. "We will be monitoring her healing over the next week to determine the best course of action." UPDATE : Karma is healed up and ready to adopt. ![]() To adopt Karma call Palm Beach County Animal Care (561) 233-1200 |
