Which Winamp?
I'd like to give Winamp another try.
I used Winamp from the late 90's to around 2007, when I switched to another player. AIMP is very much like Winamp. It has a WYSIWYG skin editor and does just about everything I want from an MP3 player, but the visualizations are on the weak side. I miss some of those trippy Winamp ones. They were fun to leave running while I listened to tunes. Aimp never did fully incorporate plugins to the degree that Winamp did. I'll always remember Winamp in much the same way as I remember my first CD player, or my first home stereo. It introduced me to a new music format which I have listened to and collected to this very day. Winamp got weird in the mid-2000's, which is part of why I quit it. Constant updates with no seeming purpose, and I SWEAR I remember the damn thing displaying tampon ads at one point. So, if I were to give Winamp another try so I can enjoy the cool plugins again, which version would you recommend? Also, did they ever make a WYSIWYG editor for it? Thanks! |

I can't seem to edit my previous post, so I'll just write a new one.
To answer the OP's question, download the 5.8 beta, opt out of anything you wouldn't like to install (modern skins, tray control, video file support, etc.), install it, mod the settings to your liking, play music ![]() ![]() I haven't used a new version since 5.24 (released around 2007, 2008), but since I tried this new beta, gotta say, this is the real deal ![]() ![]() |

Wacup is not Winamp
it does look the same but again it's not Winamp it's the project of Dr0 a former Winamp developer. and i think it's the future due to the fact that Winamp itself is basicly dead. correct, it's better and still evolving.
true for me - it's the now and the future. Winamp diehards and purists should get on-board en masse (elitists can leave their egos outside before entering). WACUP is an acronym for WinAmpCommunityUpdateProject. |

For clarity, WACUP is currently a set of plugins and replacements wrapped around the real Winamp 5.6 core, so currently IS Winamp, but with a lot of updates.
Eventually the original Winamp components will have been replaced and it will be all native WACUP. My weekly radio show for nerds and wannabe nerds 15% Extra on Source FM every Friday |
