If there were internet in 1690

Would they all profess to be all knowing much as we all are today?

I look around at humanity, mostly tourists, around me right now and we are all thinking we are the archetype of humanity. We think we know about all that is Earth and all that is Humankind.
Then I drive my Kenworth and they drive their Ford Focus's.
I suddenly realize that we are alot stupider than we believe.

A Restaurant in L.A. changed it's policy. No more children under the age of 6. They run around too much and make way too much noise. Afterwhich, Casey Anthony replied, "Finally, someone get's me"
-Bill Maher

In any case, the internet has suddenly made mankind think that just because they can type in a keyword and know it's truth, that they are geniuses. eg. R.O.H. (right back atcha bro)

We know probably less than 10% of what is really going on in the world.

About the same amount we know about what goes on in our heads.

If the internet were around in 1690, the Salem Witch Trials would be so much more interesting.

Humans are arrogant in their knowledge.
They thought they had it all in 1890. Wasn't 2 decades before they had cars and flight.....lol

Run around? Make a bunch of noise? That's the parents fault. I didn't. My kid didn't. A 3 year old can figure out enough to not be a nuisance at the dinner table. Maybe it's because people don't sit down and have dinner as a family any more.

I remember my main boggle was sitting through an hour of church on Sunday, but a restaurant? I liked to eat.

How about no kids raised by liberals under 6

I did not raise hell, because I wasn't allowed to. It's that simple. If I was a nuisance, I would be escorted out for a pop on the rear and an attitude correction.

My parents had a firm rule too. No screaming and throwing tantrums even at home.

"If you scream, you better be hurt..... otherwise, I'll give you something to scream about" - a adage my old man used to say.

Throwing a fit like I see kids do all the time in public, would not only not get me what I wanted, but quite the opposite. "Puppy dog eyes" were golden with my old man.

When you teach them that they get what they want by screaming, you teach them to be ill mannered. Unfortunately, it doesn't wear off when they are adults.

On thread topic, the year you would be looking for is 1439. That's the year of the first practical printing press. Mass media became a reality. It's not much different than now. There is just more of it.

I think part of the problem is a point of debating people. People exaggerate to make a point. For example, I really don't think you think Bush is Hitler - Chev - but you wrote that.

I don't think Sarah Palin ads saying people should "target" liberals meant she wanted people to shoot them.

Hitler seems pretty reasonable in Mein Kampf. Who would have figured?

Same with me. My parents didn't tolerate bad behavior.

I wish people around here would start driving smaller vehicles. Seems like everywhere I drive, my little truck is constantly dwarfed by huge SUVs and giant trucks. Bitch, you don't need a 25-foot-long, 3-ton, 8-mpg rolling death machine to go get your fucking nails done.

True - Look at these pictures:

The top photo was taken here in the Netherlands, the lower one in America. Take a good look at the cars

or you're driving in something you don't need.

Wait until you have to pay €1,75 for a liter of gasoline. (calculates to $9.60/gal)

I love this argument, because it has damn little to do with gas or cars, and yet has a lot to do with government taxes...Octane may be slightly different between Europe and North America, but at the same time, Europeans are supposed to be the ones driving small cars with minimal gas consumption yet you still have to pay more for the same goods...Basic laws of commerce apparently don't apply when mandated by lawmakers, and let's not even get into the influence a certain oligopoly that presides before it ([edit]OK, I'm rethinking myself and I'll give credit that North America has oil refineries while Europe, well, doesn't, so that helps in the gas price run, obviously[/edit])...But I guess people don't get pissed off at tax rates anymore and just say "Fuck it" and spread...One reason why I could never see myself living in the state of California or New York; Forget about being somewhere in Europe...

In either case, there's also much of the European population that also don't have any necessity for hauling large payloads either...One reason why I always say that the only people who need big trucks is if they have big things to haul, likewise for SUVs is if they have a really big family to shuttle...You're not going to run a landscaping business and tow your riding mower with a fucking subcompact and you're not going to get a family of 6 comfortably in even a mid-size sedan, unless you're midgets or clowns...Different necessities, different niche of cars, with emphasis on necessity, meaning not everyone understands the meaning of that word and don't follow it...

If there's anything that those two photos tell me is that traffic congestion is a hell that engulfs the transportation world whole...

Where I live I wouldn't be able to get to where I park without 4-wheel-drive in the winter, so I recently bought a Rav4 for Renee to replace the Camry, which I sold to my brother. There are a couple smaller 4-wheel-drive vehicles out there, but not with all the safety features or reliability ratings. It's pretty fuel efficient though. I did get the bigger of the two engines, but only because it was 90hp more (269 total) at a loss of only 1 mpg, and that really makes for a better handling vehicle when climbing steep mountains where I live and work.

I also drive a Tacoma, which is Toyota's smallest and most efficient truck, but with the off-road package, which gets used quite often for firewood and other jobs which no non-pickup truck could do. It also tows trailers, logs, and tree stumps quite often.

Those vehicles are very slightly bigger than the average car, but not by much, and I make use of the extra size for a lot of good reasons. I still haven't posted pics of where I live now yet; these were both taken while I was still in a flat place. The 4-wheel-drive plus ground clearance was still quite necessary though for a ton of reasons.

Don't forget to live before you die.

My point was that we aren't as all intelligent as we think we are.
100 years ago, I'm sure they thought that they knew as much as was permissible.
We're only as smart as technology allows us at this point.

Sorry about following the derailment; The persisting problem is that more knowledge leads to the discovery of more to learn a.k.a. "the more you learn, the less you know".

Don't forget to live before you die.

We're only as smart as technology allows us at this point.
There are philosophical, mathematical, and scientific ideas that have been persisting in human civilization since as far back as the days of ancient Greece and even the Renaissance (which in the context of these two timelines could be considered relatively "recent")...But modern human technology has only been persistent since more than a century ago with development in "evolutionary" stages, but never anything as drastic as between the Middle Ages and Modern day...

We may not be "intelligent" in the sense that we can't easily come up with profound ideas and concepts radical to our current knowledge like Aristotle or Newton or Einstein or Galileo, but we are certainly more "knowledgeable" because of all the discoveries made from past history...The discoveries don't stop, either, as human civilization has been around for many millennium on this earth and we still keep finding new things to learn, given the obvious fact that while no one lives forever there are still people left unborn...

I say that in the face of all that we still don't know, it most certainly is a big step up from total ignorance...

Thankfully, those people with much higher than average intelligence know and accept this fact, thus allowing the human race to keep expanding its knowledge. We will never be as intelligent as we think we are, but we will keep learning.

We use technology so we don't have to be that smart.

If someone asks me 'what if that technology fails?', my argument would be 'what if we chose not to use technology, imagine what would we have to do without?'

Interesting thread...

I'd agree, with Chev.
One thing I find interesting about our knowledge as a race, is that we know more about space than we do about the ocean here on our own planet.

>But modern human technology has only been persistent since more than a century ago

Even though we have greater technology and what humans know doubles every day, most of what happened, happened before 100 years ago. Rome was equivalent to our 19th century and much of what we consider science was discovered before the industrial revolution.

Before the fall of Rome, their technology was pretty close to our 19th century. The dark ages wiped all that out for a thousand years. The recovery of humanity used technology and knowledge from very dusty shelves saved in libraries waiting a thousand years for someone to be able to read again.

2011 technology isn't as impressive as the wheel. We could forget how to make ipods, home computers and hot pockets. If we forget how to make a wheel.... that's the dark ages....
