After ten years, I had a conversation about this place with a friend I met here. Looking back I never thought I'd be coming back after all this time and still see a few people I remember from when I started. I also did not think I'd stay in contact with others I've met here over the years. I have some good friends from this place.

All because of my love for music and a way to play the mp3s I downloaded with napster all those years ago. I wonder if Justin Frankel had any idea he would bring so many people together and form friendships that outlasted the time we actually used his software. We laughed here, we cried here, and we fought here.

This is in honor of everyone that gets the joke in the title.

It was nice meeting all of you.

But this place rocks; when I look back at older threads, it proves how fast life really goes.

I still use the dark theme that you originally started. (QOAL has made it work for newer firefoxes and updated it a bit.)

Your posts have been insightful and entertaining.

Unfortunately, I doubt any post is quite as entertaining as the reference you make.

Welcome back.

Just remember, it's ok to say what this place was, but also understand what it still could be and is. Sure the past of this place is quite great, but that doesn't subtract from the potential of the present and future.

Don't forget to live before you die.

Heh, that's the same reason I discovered this place. Funny thing is that I haven't used Winamp, or any music player for that matter, in years (does anybody around here still do?). Last.fm & Grooveshark are all I need.

This is a sig of some nature.

I don't think I'll ever stop using Winamp.

Listening to music on last.fm/grooveshark... Never got into it. I'd rather use my bandwidth for something else.

^What Ted said.

Although, I do enjoy finding new music through last.fm and scrobbling.
Current Winamp install quotes "Total time played: 100w 1d 20:40:47.715"

Also this thread is lacking the obvious man with a fish image.
You're all welcome.

Honestly, I've mostly toned down over the last couple years; These days I just do weddings, parties for friends, and dances at my school district where I work my day job as a school counselor.

There was a time I did vinyl trance on the weekends in the Cleveland OH/Pittsburgh PA areas and swing dances every Thursday night in Youngstown, OH. Used Technics decks and Tascam mixers with Carver and Pioneer amps pushing JBL speakers (six 15", two 18", and a bunch of really annoying horn tweeters), enough to quite easily fill the occasional football field sized outdoor job or the more frequent club and gymnasium jobs.

Vinyl and electronic music started to die where I was, my back began to feel like it was breaking when I loaded and unloaded speakers, I was moving across the country (didn't want to move all that), and I needed weekends for other things, so I sold a lot of stuff (including the box trailer that carried it all) and stuck only with a smaller system for a few events here and there.

Currently I run an Asus laptop and homebrew desktop mixed by an el-cheapo radio shack mixer. This feeds Pioneer and Technics amps, which power anywhere from two to eight 12" infinity woofers (plus accompanying cone mids and dome tweeters), depending on how big the venue is. That's plenty for a high school gymnasium or other similar venue, but very weak outdoors. The benefit is that this gear is lift-able without risk of hernia, fits under the cap of the truck, and has very good sound quality unlike the boom-and-scream monsters of the past.

I had a separate guy do lighting in the past (lighting is his career), and all I do now is a strobe, a multi-laser pattern thingie, a fogger, and for around the booth/table, a few 3-foot blacklights and some christmas lights; in other words, not much.

I'll have to post some pictures of what I use next time I do a gig. Homecoming season is coming up in October, and I might do a gig before that if my kids behave well enough to earn it (I usually do it as a reward if the student body in general has a good month).

Don't forget to live before you die.

@P

As far as speakers, this is an idea of what I bring to a typical job. These were for last night, but this picture omits one extra pair of speakers (3-way similar to the brown ones above). I didn't bring them because it becomes much more difficult to fit it all into the truck with the computers, amps, wiring, and mixer; still possible, but I have to get creative and take a lot more time and energy. The black ones are home made with scrap wood, pink brand fiberglass insulation inside, and some terminals and grilles that I bought online.

@ everyone else - good to see you all peeking in. I raise my glass to you (even though it's just water tonight).

Don't forget to live before you die.
