So with 7 mb/s upload speeds, how many listeners can I broadcast to?
I live in the United Kingdom, was just wondering how many listeners should I be able to broadcast to with upload speeds of 7 mb/s. And an average download speed of 38 mb/s.
I've recently upgraded to BT Infinity and thought I'd be able to broadcast to around 200 listeners comfortably, but once I reach around 15 listeners, they all complain their buffering, and constantly get kicked off. Yet if its only 2 or 3 listeners they all can listen ok. Before I upgraded I was only getting 2 mb/s download, and an upload of 256 kbps respectively, and was able to broadcast to 15 listeners then, so why hasen't things improved now that I'm getting 7 mb/s? Can I manipulate my router to achieve better results? Thanks in advance |

here is DRO's formula:
L x B x 1.1 = BW L - number of listeners B - encoding bit rate in Megabits (128Kbps = 0.128Mbits) BW - required bandwidth in Megbits |

so that means if I broadcast at 128 kbps I should get around 50 listeners with 7 mb/s upload speed?
How many listeners could I manage if I choose the lowest setting 24 kbps mono? |

Basically I got at least 7 times more upload speed, yet still can't manage more than 15 listeners like I did before.
Someone suggested perhaps not all the 7 mb/s upload is dedicated to shoutcast, do I need a different router which I can manipulate, or can I alter the BT Infinity router which BT provided with the contract? Or could they do something? |

50 listeners would be the absolute maximum without any other network traffic going on over your connection and the rough formula is only intended as a rough guide on a dedicated host and not generally for trying to use your home internet to run things.
also it is most likely you're nowhere near the peak you're mentioning due to doing other things and if anything i wouldn't be surprised if BT are purposefully throttling you which would explain some of the issue. and as i'd hope you're aware off (especially when it comes to british ISP's), they are very good in covering themselves by saying 'up to' with a lot of the values they quote. so only getting 15 before listeners on a home connection sounds pretty fair at the 128kbps output. and a final comment, mass sending of pm's about your issue and posting the original post in multiple un-related threads and un-related sub-forums isn't a great way to get a response and in all truth you were very close to being banned yesterday due to such massively suspicious posting behaviour. -daz |
