I like free stuff. I really like free stuff that works. Two small freeware apps I couldn't do without are:

Cacheman, a disk cache manager.

RegCleaner, a Windows registry cleaner, editor, and more. Plus the author is a Winamp user!!

Please share some of your favorites here. (Mine just happened to be utilities. Yours could be a notepad replacement, graphics viewer, etc.).

Two of my favorite freeware programs:

SmartFTP - Very good FTP client, seems to upload and download on every server I've ever used (can't say that for CuteFTP :P)

Atomic Clock Sync (download directly here) - Synchronizes your computer's clock with the NIST Atomic Clock in Colorado. Of course, you already figured that out.

acdsee

the BEST, i repeat, BEST image viewer of all time! Hands DOWN!

2 options for use. sponsored version (free) or demo version (trail time) which eventually makes you pay or switch over to the sonsored version. so technically it is free if you want it to be. And the sponsored version has all the features and isn't a hasel to use compared to the full version. not that I use the sponsored version. <cough>cracked it</cough>

Basically, Acdsee is my alltime favorite program, other then Winamp.

In all these years in computing, one program has never failed me in any of its incarnations-

PKzip

also, as I don't have a Sound blaster, to play MIDI's
i rely on WinGroove MIDI Instruments.

I was going to say exactly the same - you beat me to it!

Seriously though it is a really good installer and well worth anyone wanting to distribute a app to consider.

Another excellent bit of freeware is mp3ext, it displays the bitrate of all your mp3s from explorer.

My software (so I'm biased):
http://www.pawsoft.co.uk

Actually it certainly isn't my favorite freeware. I have so much I don't know what I would single out. Possibly BSPlayer, I have taken a strange liking to it for unknown reasons.

I like freeware that are thin, do very specific things instead of try to cover everything, and don't mess with your Windows registry. Examples:

AboutTime: There are LOTS of time sync apps out there, but AboutTime has a clean interface, uses SNTP for accuracy, and is the thinnest. It doesn't grow into bloatware by giving you tons of options, showing you clocks on 10 time zones, acting as your screensaver, and doing other crap. Simple, direct.

RAMpage: Maintains a configurable level of free RAM by forcing Windows to swap inactive code into swap memory. Somehow, having a healthy level of free RAM improves the stability of Windows 95/98 a lot. With RAMpage running, you can keep your PC up and running for days, open and close lots of apps, and still have stable performance like WinNT/2000.

IrfanView: Graphics file viewer, slide show, screen capture, format conversion, the works. Thin, fast, honest freeware.

GIMP

IrfanView, definitely! AnalogX is tops too!
Hmm . . . no-one's mentioned CDex yet either!
Also:
PowerArchiver
More features & better than Winzip, supports ALL archive formats.
InoculateIt Anti-Virus
Pisses on Norton & Macafee.
ToggleMinimize
Small App that makes programs/windows minimize to systray instead of toolbar.
ModPlug Player/Tracker/Browser Plugin
Sorry Mikamp, the best Module/Tracker software by far!
Add/Remove Pro
An enhanced version of Add/Remove Programs Control Panel
TClockEx
Systray Clock enhancement . . . wow!
AntiCrash
Truly essential - does exactly what it says on the tin
IconSnatcher
Extracts icons out of EXE & DLL (any) files. Save as ICO, GIF, BMP.

Thinkin' about it, there's 1000's & just too many to list here!

Fave Freeware Sites & links to loads more freeware apps:

[EDIT 2011]

10 Years After...

Wow, old thread, linked to from a thread in GD
The only thing I still use from the above list is IrfanView

AND...

NSCopy... throttled file copier
jRes (justinres)... on the fly, without-rebooting ability to switch resolutions and bit depths.

Get them there.

A few freeware apps that spring to mind which haven't been mentioned so far:

Audiogalaxy
Desktop Architect
FileMon and RegMon
HTML Help Workshop
THE Rename
MP3 Splitter

Agree thoroughly with those mentioning X-Setup, Metapad, Reshacker and MP3-info. Great tools.

My favorite....

Probably would be DAP (Download Accelerator Plus).
Manages and speeds up your downloads, yay!
Only thing is, you can't do SUPER ACCELERATED MODE (which is claimed to download 300 times faster) if you are a Dial-Up Modem user (so your out of luck if you have 56k modem or below. )

Another freeware image viewer like Irfanview, but with MNG support(Irfanview doesn't support MNG yet). It can also batch convert your animated gifs to MNG.

Lets see.

NSIS Rocks.
MLIN.net This guy writes little things that rule. Clipomatic is the most useful tool a programmer can ever have. last n copy operations remembered, plus other neat things like always available paste things, with wildcards for dates and stuff. Essential.

Oh yeah! And "Startup Control Panel" by M.Lin is also essential, control what is auto-started TOTALLY. ANd he has an essential systray mgmt program (that doesn't work on w2k )

WS FTP LE is my prefered FTP client.

Oh and PGP.

"Beer?"

That's what this is for:

Incidentally, the one freeware app I forgot:

Startup Control Panel

It's by choice (or you can uninstall it, I can't remember which)

I prefer the gnutella network, anyway.

Turbo Navigator - The best freeware filemanager, IMO. (And I've tried almost every single one:-)
Dimension 4 - My favorite time sync program.

Don't feel like listing all my favs, but here's a few:
Lotsa stuff from http://www.sysinternals.com
ModPlug stuff, as mentioned before.
XMPlay and BASS: http://www.un4seen.com/music/
Lotsa stuff from here: http://www.blorp.com/~peter/
Lotsa other Winamp plug-ins.
Various emulators and especially game music players: http://www.zophar.net
LAME, BladeEnc, and Radium's Fraunhofer 1.263 MP3 codec.
Monkey's Audio
MP3ext (but there's some registry changes I had to make after installing. Think I'll try submitting a better version of the thing once I've learned how to code.)
DMEXMenu
Another Task Manager
Various powertoys and other goodies from Microsoft. Try browsing through their list of free downloads sometime.
Okay, I'm bored, so that's enough for now.
