Portable Device Support in Winamp

Here is the deal. This xmas I cancelled a skiing holiday to write a replacement for mlipod. It is called ml_pmp. Here is a quick Q&A about ml_pmp. It will be included in a future release of winamp.

Q) How new is it?
A) ml_pmp is closed source and owned by nullsoft. Almost all of it is new code. Let's face it, mlipod was poorly hacked together as yours truly was learning C++. It needed a re-write.

Q) Why is ml_pmp better than mlipod?
A) ml_pmp has its very own plugin architecture. There are now pmp_.dll plugins. We will start out with pmp_ipod (for iPod support), pmp_njb (Creative Neo JukeBox), pmp_p4s (all devices supporting Microsoft Plays For Sure). It supports nearly all portable mp3 players sold today.

Being a complete re-write it is faster and crashes way less. My favorite new feature is the Transfer Queue. This means you can add files to the queue while transfers are in progress.

Q) I like mlipod. Should I move to ml_pmp yet?
A) It depends. ml_pmp lacks a few features that mlipod has. For example, Copy to hard drive. This will hopefully be put into ml_pmp in due course, but not for the first release. Transcoding is planned for the first proper release of ml_pmp, but isn't in there yet. It doesn't deal with the transfer of playlists as completely as mlipod does. Hopefully it will do soon.

Basically, it is up to you to decide for yourself.

Q) Did you say "plugin architecture?" I wanna write my own plugin.
A) Woah now. Unfortunately you can't write your own device plugins yet. Hopefully you will be able to do so soon.

Q) I want this. When?
A) Now. Get Winamp 5.2 or better.

Q) What will happen to mlipod?
A) I probably won't be doing much with it anymore, but as it is open source, anyone is welcome to add to it.

Q) Winamp crashes with the new device plugin(s)
A) Make sure you remove the old plugin (ml_ipod, zen, etc) first.

Finally, massive thanks for the immense support with mlipod. It has been fun.

If you have any further questions, post them below and I'll do my best to answer.

Much love,

Will

Could you expand on this a bit...I'm not exactly sure what you're saying.

Nonetheless, its great to hear that it is going to become a part of the Winamp package.

ml_pmp is a generic support architecture for any number of device plugins. obviously devices have different functionality, and as such, certain device plugins will offer more or less support than others in line with device functionality.

Thanks again Will for all your work on the iPod plugin. Your description of ml_iPod as "poorly hacked" does not do it justice. For those of us that just want to listen to music on an iPod and use Winamp, you, and ml_iPod are heroes!

If pmp_iPod improves on or adds features I will use, I'll change over. Until then, I am grateful to have ml_iPod!

I should also mention that pmp_ipod plays much nicer with iTunes. It does not destory album art, itunes smart playlists, or anything else. It works without problems with the iPod video. (But no video transfer yet).

Yes. It doesn't matter what firmware version you have with creative players.

Winamp Crash:

I've tried it with my zen touch! But Winamp crashes on loading the device!
So I've removed the 3rd Party Creative Plugin, so only yours is installed. Now it works!
If you want to fix that, search the forum for the zen plugin.

the copy feature my be implemented in a later version. there is no sony support unless someone else came up with one but since the pmp* sdk isn't available that's not going to happen for a while (if at all)

Been experimenting with ml_pmp a bit... It recognised a 6GB creative zen micro without any problems whatsoever, but when I tried plugging in my 5g 30GB iPod, it refused (and still refuses) to show up. The same iPod works perfectly with ml_ipod.

Not entirely sure what the problem is... are there any known issues with 5g iPods?

This was on a clean install of Winamp 5.2 build 359 with portable device support btw

Hmm... interesting. Managed to get it to work:

1. Clean install of Winamp 5.2 beta - ipod not showing
2. Installed ml_ipod - ipod shows up under devices
3. Uninstalled ml_ipod - ipod now shows up under portables

Well at least its working now

another thing:
you could make Portables as a childTreeItem under Devices not as an own TreeItem

Thanks SpaceBanana,

I had the same issue with my 3g iPod (latest firmware) not being recognised after a clean install of 5.2 beta.

Tried: playing tracks off of the iPod, unplugging/plugging with Winamp running, with Winamp & iTunes running, transferring some tracks to the iPod via iTunes with Winamp closed, & running, no go...but the install/uninstall of ml_ipod did the trick. After ml_pmp found the iPod I shutdown Winamp, unplugged the iPod, restarted Winamp, checked the Media Library, plugged the iPod back in, & it is being recognised properly now.

Cheers,
drG

The problems with recognising iPod has been fixed for the latest build.

As for putting the "Portables" tree item below the Devices item, the Devices item is probably being phased out. The changes for 5.2 are not complete yet.

Playlist Support

Thanks for the great update. I tried to update the playlists and of course I get the error that says that it is not availible yet. (I am sorry I don't have a screenshot since I am at work ) But I wanted to know if this would be availible in the final release.

Thanks Guys!

Great to hear about the portable device support. I am trying to use Pocket Tunes software for my PalmOS Sony NX70V. The program is designed to communicate with Windows Media Player. It has the option of selecting between MTP or Legacy communication. The NX70V only supports Legacy connections, which currently work with WMP. Winamp (current beta build, clean install, no third party plugins) does not show the device, nor does the "Portables" tree item show up, which I assume only shows up when a compatible device is connnected.

Am I doing things wrong on my end or is there just not yet support for "legacy" devices.

Thanks.

Hmm Winamp does recognize my 5GB Zen Micro (Version 2.x firmware, PlayForSure compatible) but it doesn't find any music on the player, so I cannot open or play any of the songs on their, however I can see how much space is free on my Zen Micro, which is kind off odd. Maybe it's because the Zen Micro (2.x firmware) saves all the songs in \Music\ directory and so ml_pmp doens't see it and my player is showing up under portables..

Hope to see more progress so I can play music through WinAmp !

My 2 cents:

If I understand Will correctly from other conversations he and I have had, pmp_p4s.dll will detect your PlaysForSure devices, but it won't play from them due to the P4S architecture.

It should however show all files, even if they are in subdirectories.

I have a Creative Zen MicroPhoto, and this is how mine works.

Woo! Thanks for the updates

The problem i'm having at the moment is that often (but not all the time) the attached error appears and crashes winamp on completion of tranferring files to the iPod. Has anyone else had this?

I have no problems drag & dropping to my 3g iPod (USB connection) using the media library, but every time I try to autofill, with or without full album option, after the last track is transfered I get a runtime error msg & Winamp shuts down with no error report being generated by Winamp, nothing in XP Event Viewer. After Winamp restarts the Media Library reports the disk space used by the autofill but shows zero tracks.

XPProSP2+updates - AMD 3800+X2 - 3G 20GB iPod 3.1.1 firmware - clean install of build 365 - iTunes 6.0.2.23

If you need any other specific system info just let me know.

Attached pict of runtime error msg.

update:
Restored my iPod, opened Winamp media library & iPod is not showing, closed Winamp, opened iTunes, iPod recognised, transfered a podcast over, closed iTunes, reopened Winamp, Winamp now closes without error with iPod attached, reopen iTunes, ipod recognised, eject iPod using iTunes, close iTunes, attach iPod, open Winamp, Winamp now closes with error:

update: I installed the updated device files that will posted in the 365 beta thread http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~wdhf2/u/devices.zip & now Winamp is not closing when the iPod is attached but I am pretty much back to square one with the runtime error at the end of autofill. Going to try reformatting the iPod again & see what happens.

update: Reformatted iPod, not recognised by Winamp, close Winamp, open Itunes, iPod recognised, no tracks transferred using iTunes, close iTunes, open Winamp, iPod now showing in Media Library, test autofill, runtime error after last track is transferred, winamp closes.

Supports Plays For Sure but not standard USB?

When you say it supports "Plays For Sure" devices; are you really saying MTP protocol devices? Does that mean that MSC (Mass Storage Compliant) USB devices like the Rio Carbon and flash players won't be supported? I have plugged in my Rio Carbon and it doesn't appear to be seen. Am I missing something?

I have a Dell Pocket DJ running the PlaysForSure firmware, and so far everything has been great! Other than it taking awhile for it to show (10 secs no big deal) without some message saying that it is loading info, its great!

Only thing is what is the ALB 0kb file that is being placed when I do my transfers?

I love how you can finally batch edit ID tags... The first program I've seen that can do this.

Can you add support for USC-compliant devices? I mainly just need this feature to auto-sync my computer with my USC-complaint mp3 player. Otherwise, I may switch over to MM.

Quick question, will this plugin assimilate and build upon the functions of the third party gUSB plugin? It would be nice.
