2007 Presidential Dollars

2.5 page article in Coin World about the new dollars that will begin circulating in about 10 days here in the US.

Will be interesting to find these in circulation, though too bad they'll never take off so as long as we have the paper dollar...

Oh baby!
Those are WAY better than Susan B's
I had heard about them last week.
The U.S. Mint's website has a page on them too.

Indeed, though I liked the Sacagawea dollars, too. Those will also begin circulating again. In fact, so as long as the Presidential Dollar series is active, it was mandated in the act that the Sac dollars be made alongside the Presidential dollars, and will take up 1/3rd of all the dollars released.

The George W Bush coin will be worth a nickel, at best
I wonder how long the edge lettering will hold up to wear.

Bush will only be on the dollar coin if he dies at least 2 years before the 43rd coin is issued, which should be in 2017. So he has to die by 2015.

As for the edge lettering, they're incuse (sunken in), so they'll last a VERY long time. They're still readable on my 188 year old half dollar.

The full inscription reads "FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR".

The driver asks, ''How much is everyone giving, on average?''
''Most people are giving about a gallon.''

Some mintage figures for the new Presidential dollars:

300 million each. Total of 1.2 BILLION of them will be made, plus the 400 to 600 million Sacagawea dollars that will be made alongside of them.

I really don't care what they put on the dollar. I look at these like train tokens and try to get rid of them if I get them in change. I'll actually gripe if you try to pass one off on me.

They are too close in size to a quarter and the last thing I needed is more coin. I usually try to get rid of coin before I suck it up breaking the vacuum cleaner or have to dig it out of the car seats, washer, dryer and chairs.

I never pay with coins. I use a wallet with paper money, and if I get change because I HAD to pay with cash instead of credit card, the change goes into a vase at home that occasionally goes to the credit union with me.

Oh yeah, a customer came in to work on Thursday with one of those. I meant to take pictures but yours are better than mine would be anyway.

I kept trying to pass it off to customers whenever they had change but no one wanted it. Everyone seems to think that dollar coins are useless, they'd much rather have paper money. A few people said they wanted to look at it first but said they'd probably confuse it for a quarter even though it's gold. I eventually bought it myself. I'm not that big of a coin collector but if I happen to find something interesting I'll take it home.

Spiral out, my friend. You will find your way back to yourself, we all will.
I'll be waiting, and shall see you on the other side...

Really a lot of people that only carry a wallet don't want to carry around coins. They often fall out of pockets when you sit down if your pockets are shallow. Coins also make noise while walking and sometimes create discomfort. While the coins would be interesting to look at and/or collect, I don't see much everyday use for them.

I fail to see how there's an argument.
People in every other country in the world are used to carrying change that is worthwhile. I'm sure we'd adapt quickly enough.

While I agree that people elsewhere would be happy carrying change, and while I think having nice coins are interesting, I just don't think I'd use them often.

You're right though, I shouldn't really be arguing on a thread that isn't really meant for coin vs. paper.

It amazes me how many times the coin dollar has changed in my lifetime compared to other coins. I was born in 1978 when the coin dollar was the Dwight Eisenhower dollar. Then it it was resized to become the Susan B. Anthony Dollar, then there were a few years where I don't think any coin dollars were available. They then brought back the Susan B. Anthony Dollars. Then the gold colored Sacajawea dollar in 2000 became something commonly found as change when buying stamps from a machine. Now they're doing presidents. I can't keep up.

Don't forget to live before you die.

I guess we better get used to metal dollars, because it looks like this will be the trend. The government will save 150 million dollars a year because of George coins. It costs twice as much to make a coin, but it lasts 30 years, instead of a year and a half.

Coins can last hundreds of years. I often get 1965 quarters in change (I don't see older ones hardly at all, because they're 90% silver and picked out of change).

And my oldest quarter is an 1838 one. Damn nice shape for being nearly 170 years old.

That's because the coinage we have isn't worth much.
Think about it,

How much more convenient would it be to put one coin in a pop machine, rather than having to make sure you have 4 quarters or having to search for that dollar bill with perfect, uncreased corners?
