can't play m3u's (streamed mp3's)

I can get then to play in Real Player and so on but only winamp seems to play mp3's now. m3u's just sit there and don't play. Anyone have any ideas? I cleaned out my cache so that troubleshooting problem has been taken care of.

Sorry, but I don't understand either.
Before I provide any fix, please explain the following:

"when i type the address in,nothing plays"

Where exactly are you typing the address in?

"the notepad addresses i typed are 100% correct"

What addresses exactly? Where?

"I just found out the m3u's play fine in the ftp server"

Are these mp3/m3u files on an ftp server somewhere?
ie. the address is eg. ftp://server/blahblah/file.m3u

If so, then alas, Winamp doesn't support ftp streams :/

Do the .pls playlist streams from www.shoutcast.com play ok in Winamp?
(these same radio streams can be accesses via: Winamp > Media > Library > Internet Radio)

Do the .m3u playlist streams from the sites listed here play ok in Winamp

eg. www.dmusic.com > homepage
Featured Artist
Godless: LoFi | HiFi

If you load some local files into the Winamp playlist and then go to:
Winamp > Playlist > Manage Playlist / List button > Save Playlist
and save the playlist to an .m3u file
does it then open and play ok in Winamp when you double click said .m3u?

However, if I've read your reply correctly, I think it's just a case of Winamp not supporting ftp streaming. It is on the Wishlist though, heh. Sorry :/

The answers are "i type the url to the m3u in the address bar up top=nothing plays but winamp pops up. Double click the m3u in the server=plays fine." I have been doing streamed mp3's for a long time now with no problems on my end. Everyone else can play them fine but i can't. "the address i put is like this: www.mysite.com/filename.mp3 then enter once. i rename it as filename.m3u. i upload both." and as i said "when i am in my ftp server (both ftp program and website) and execute the m3u,everything is fine. however, when i type the address in the address bar,it just doesn't play" any advice? as i said today is the first time this has happened.

You didn't answer all of my questions.
I was trying to determine whether it's a browser, a windows, or a winamp problem, and I'm still none the wiser.

So, you're typing the url's into the browser's address bar? Hmm...
What happens when you type (or copy+paste) the url's into Winamp's Open URL Box?

I know you said that M3U and MP3 are both selected in Winamp > Prefs > File Types, but I still need the answers to the other questions as well, eg. does winamp play local m3u playlists properly (ie. m3u playlist files stored on your hard drive)?

Have you tried rebooting?

I think it might also be a good idea to post a HijackThis log, just so we can confirm whether or not your browser's been hijacked by some malware.

Also, a working sample m3u might help as well
(if you don't want to post the url here, then you can PM it to me instead).

You said that you've just installed Winamp 5.08. Are you a first time user, and you've been using RealPlayer up until now? Or were you using an older version of Winamp and you've just upgraded to the latest version?

As soon as I can determine the source of the problem, then I can provide a fix. But as it stands, I'm sorry, but I'm still none the wiser. Your second reply is pretty much the same as the first reply, just worded slightly differently, heh.

like i said

when i type the address in the address bar at the top,m3u's will not play. however when i play them in Real Player,Ftp Server,Open Link in Winamp, etc they play normally. I can show you a hijack file if you want. i don't think i have the current one but i can get it.

Ok. We're getting somewhere now. Typing url's into the browser address bar is a slightly unconventional way of doing things, but nevertheless, it still should work. As it's definitely starting to sound like an Internet Explorer issue, then yes, get the latest version of HJT (v1.99.1) and post the log here.

[EDIT]

I already gave you the link to the latest version of HijackThis.

But here it is again
http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe

And there's loads more links to it here

Please post the full log including all the headers.
Is that definitely v1.99.1 ? (not 1.99)
It looks like an older version to me, and alas, older versions are quite useless :/

Do you not have any firewall or antivirus software installed?

Kill this process with Task Manager:
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

Then go to: Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
and uninstall Viewpoint (anything)
eg. Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Toolbar, Viewpoint Player, etc.

More info about Viewpoint:
http://www.greatis.com/appdata/u/v/viewmgr.exe.htm
http://castlecops.com/startuplist-4102.html
http://www.liutilities.com/products/...brary/ViewMgr/

I know you really don't seem to like answering questions but have you maybe disabled any of the default Windows Services prior to the problem occurring?

Go to: Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types tab
Scroll down for and hi-lite: M3U
Click "Advanced"
Make sure "Play in Winamp" is the default action (bold text)
Make sure the command line (c/o Edit button) is:
"C:\Program Files\Winamp\winamp.exe" "%1"

(that's assuming Winamp is installed to the default folder)

Also try emptying the internet cache again
(I know you said you've already done it once).
Close all browser windows, go to:
Control Panel > Internet Options > General > Temporary Internet Files > Delete Files:
Checkmark "delete all offline content"
Click OK.

Do you use Netscape? Does the same problem exist in Netscape, or is it only in Internet Explorer?
*sigh*

i answered all your questions.

anyway yes i just checked and the program says 1.99 or whatever it was you said. I checked the edit in winamp and it does have that C:ProgramFiles/Winamp/Winamp.exe %1 thing you said. I can try with viewpoint but i have had that for a while and winamp worked fine until now. I'm just confused here.

no one knows?

by the way also when opening the streamed file before winamp pops up it takes several seconds before it does. I do not know if this is definitely a spyware or malware problem or not. If there is something i should be looking for in processes i can check there as well. Just tell me what it is and i'll check processes to see if that is causing it.

streamed mp3's (m3u) won't play via address bar

when i type the url of the mp3 i made after uploading to the server it plays fine, however when i stream it as an m3u it refuses to play. but this only happens via the address bar. If i type the address in Winamp itself,Real Players,Windows Media Player, netscape web browser, executing in ftp and hard drive, they will play with no problem. no one else has this problem so i am convinced that there is a setting on my IE that prevents me from listening to it using the address bar. either that or there is spyware conflicting. Any ideas?

@ Bamahusker...

I've merged the new streamed mp3's (m3u) won't play via address bar thread you just created with this one, which addresses the same problem. Please do not start a new thread re: the same issue. From now on, post a reply in the appropriate thread instead of starting a new thread for the same issue.

Don't email or PM me concerning Winamp. Instead, either start a NEW TOPIC or post a REPLY in the appropriate thread in these forums. This will also benefit others who may have a similar question or problem. But before posting, please first Search the forums and read all FAQs and all Sticky threads.

Sure. I could pop in and help if I wanted to, but since DJ Egg was trying as best he could to help you, and based on your inablility (refusal?) to answer specific questions he asked of you, I feel I'd probably be spinning my wheels too (as I'm sure Egg feels at this point).

Tell ya what...
Egg is a VERY helpful and knowledgeable guy. Why don't you look back at his posts, go over them carefully, and then post back to answer his specific questions? Then, when you reply with all that has been asked of you, I'm certain that Egg will have a change of heart and reply once more.

But for the moment, I'm staying out/ keeping clear of this.

After you posted the first HJT log, you never posted another with all headers intact, as Egg had requested above. And btw... the instructions specifically say to ATTACH the log, and not to post it within a thread...

Instructions for attaching the HijackThis log to your post:

Attach the log and don't post it directly into the thread, else it may break tables.

Start hijackthis.exe, click "do a system scan and save a log file", change the extension from .log to .txt (ie. save it as hijackthis.txt, not hijackthis.log) and attach the log to your post via the "Post a Reply" button in your thread (or via "Post a New Topic" if starting a brand new thread for a new topic).

Don't try to fix anything with HJT unless you're absolutely sure what it is!
(ie. until an expert here tells you exactly what to fix after they've seen the log).
Most of the entries in the log can be harmless or even essential/required.
Okay, onward...

Thanks for stepping in Nunzio. Yay!

@Bamahusker

Please just answer me these questions. This will help me to determine the correct fix.
(and yes, I CAN fix it for you, I've not given up yet).

1. What happens when you click an actual m3u playlist hyperlink on a web page?
ie. not a url in the browser's address bar, but a direct link to an m3u playlist.

eg. In Internet Explorer, go to this site, and click on the HiFi or LoFi links on the home page. Tell me if Winamp opens and plays the streams, or not.

www.dmusic.com

2. Do the "Tune-In" .pls playlist streams at www.shoutcast.com work properly when you click them? ie. do they open and play ok in Winamp?

3. When you enter the m3u url in the Internet Explorer address bar, you said that Winamp opens but doesn't play anything. Please tell us exactly what happens. Is there anything in the Winamp playlist window, ie. is there an entry which relates to your m3u/mp3 file? If so, then what does it say exactly? When you right click that playlist entry and select "playlist entry" or "view file info", what does it say is the path to the file?
Or is the playlist window completely empty?

If you answer those questions for me, then I will know for sure if it's a browser MIME Type configuration or browser cache related issue, or not.

If you don't provide me with that required information, then I honestly can't help you.

If the answer to questions 1 + 2 is "yes", then it's not a MIME or cache problem, and you probably need to post your problem on some Internet Explorer support site somewhere else.

I know you already said that you've emptied the internet cache, but please just confirm the following:

You closed all browser/email/explorer windows, yes?
Then you went to:
Start > Control Panel > Internet Options
General tab > Temporary Internet Files > Delete Files:
Checkmark "delete all offline content"
Click OK
Wait for the cache to be emptied
Then click OK again to close Internet Options.

You did that, yes?

Re: spyware
If there was any spyware running, then it would show up in your HJT log
(again, that's assuming you're using HJT v1.99.1 and not v1.99, which I would've known if you'd posted the complete log, including the headers).
The only bad entry in your log was the Viewpoint thing, which is adware, and possibly spyware too. However, I'm not saying that Viewpoint is the cause of the problem, just that it should be removed :/
This also doesn't mean that there's no spyware lying dormant/hidden on your system.
If you are concerned about any potential spyware issues, then you should install and run both of Spybot Search and Destroy and Adaware SE (and again, make sure all browser/email/explorer windows are closed before running the scans).

Anyway, please answer those 3 questions as best as possible, and if I need to provide you with a MIME registry fix, then I've already got one prepared.

yep

I answered all those questions in one short sentence. "i trued everything". when you said "does this work, does that work," etc. i said "yes i tried all that" so if you respond with "you didn't answer my question" what does that indicate? anyway,i got another account (even though i'm still on comcast) for a webserver and i uploaded the mp3 and m3u and typed the url for the m3u and i get the same thing. someone in a help chatroom yesterday asked for a web address to an m3u so i can supply this if you want. http://home.comcast.net/~paulg777/LazzieLay.m3u it played fine for them though. i even defaulted m3u as media player. it would not play either. It has to be something in IE as Netscape browser plays it fine when i type the URL in the address bar there. It might also be related to temp files too. in the last couple days i have been to a lot of sites but yet only 8 files are in my temp files so there should be a lot. i'll run another Hijack This scan and post what i find again. here it is:

@ Bamahusker

This is a big thread about 14 pages via a printer (a lot to read). You may have already answered the questions in previous posts, but no one wants to look though this thread to find your answers. Sorry, but "I tried everything" does not specifically answer the questions that DJ Egg has asked.

You may have already answered the questions elsewhere, but please answer DJ's questions again.

Is Winamp playing any of the links? Do you see any entries in the playlist? Does station or stream appear in the "ticker" of the main/player Window.

What do you see in the playlist editor – nothing, random characters (numbers, letters, etc) or correct title data?

When you click select "playlist entry" where does the path point to?

When you click "view file info", what do you see - blank fields? What is the name of the "view file info" box - 'MP3 Stream Info Box', 'MPEG File info box + ID3 editor' or something else?

Please do not PM me for tech support. Any request for tech support through PM will be ignored.

hmmm, I missed that part of your post. Go to SHOUTcast and click on one of the Tune In! buttons () from the showcase/station list.

The HJT log is clean.

What happens when YOU click this url?
http://home.comcast.net/~paulg777/LazzieLay.m3u

Does the m3u open and play ok in Winamp?
(or Media Player, depending on which of the two is the current default m3u handler)

Or are you just seeing LazzieLay(1) in the Winamp playlist?

Whatever the playlist entry is displayed as, right click it and select "playlist entry".
Tell us what it says the path to the file is.

eg. if it's working correctly, then it'll say:
http://home.comcast.net/~paulg777/LazzieLay.mp3

If it isn't working correctly, then it'll say something like:
file://C:/Documents%20and%20settings/Paulg/local%20settings/Temporary%20Internet %20Files/Content.IE/GHIBC9YV/LazzieLay(1).m3u

I will not be posting anything else in this thread until you answer these questions properly.

The following may be a long shot, do have a temporary/internet file cleaner app. Although I did not see one in you HjT log, that is where my suspicions are starting to go.

You misunderstood. Sometimes a temp/internet file cleaner can be the cause of the problem (not the solution). I was thinking that the file cleaner (if you had one) was removing the file from the internet cache before Winamp had a chance to play it. Since you do not have a cleaner, that is not the case.

actually i fixed it

You were right though. I needed a temp cleaner. I just remembered i had one recommended by a friend called "Clean Up!" and it removes Temp internet files, history in url bar, etc. I just ran it and after it got to temp internet files on the Clean Up! program, while it was still running i typed in that address and it played fine so it was a temp file problem. I'm glad i still had that installed. Thank you so much and i apologize if i bugged or annoyed you.

Heh, and I just spent the last 20 minutes typing out a post with instructions on how to manually delete the contents of the Temp Internet Files folder/subfolders.

Ah well, deleted the post now.

Glad to hear you finally solved the problem. Yay
