Back To School Time ....................

My boys go back to school on Monday. My oldest son is starting High School this year.

It is so hard to believe that my little baby is starting high school. Just yesterday he was only 21 inches long sleeping in my arms.

Time goes by so fast................

...And you don't even look old enough to have a kid in kindergarten.

Time indeed goes by fast when you're a great parent and you've given your kids great childhoods. When you see them getting older and going farther in life, it's not only because of their own smarts and ambitions. It's because of you, too.

Lucky people. School holidays here end about 6th September and my local education authority are so feckin cool that they haven't got schools for my kids to go to. Well they offered one school, which is the one I removed my oldest from as she was bullied so badly she nearly had a breakdown.
I suppose they'll stay stupid for a few more months until I find them somewhere pleasant to attend.

I'll gladly trade my job, including my salary, with anyone going to high school. Neither are easy, but having been through both, this is my choice. Any takers?

OK, my life is yours and yours is mine.

Here's the good news:

--- You're now a technology department manager for the world's largest tax services company, and you make five figures per month. You have great credit, a row of gold cards in your wallet, a titanium-silver BMW 530i, a variety of mutual funds and stocks, and two kittens. (Goodbye kitties )

Here's the bad news:

(1) You thought trading away high school meant no more home work? Hehehehe...think again. How much did you have before, 10 hours per week? 20? Say hello to at least 40 hours each week of work you'll have to do at home, after business hours. Did you previously enjoy playing video games (or any other extracurricular activity)? I hope you won't miss them too much, because you won't play any again until after you retire.

(2) And on the topic of retirement, you'll keep making plans for retiring early, but the dates will seem to keep getting pushed. The ever-increasing cost of living and the impending loss of social security mean you'll entirely have to make your own way in retirement. All the help your grandparents got will be all gone. But no matter, you've got so much to do that you can't retire until you're 90 years old anyway.

(3) Your to-do list has over 50 tasks on it. And that's just for Monday. Your company and career depend on you getting these things done. Needless to say, your radio station is now either defunct or belongs to someone else.

(4) About once a week, lasting for 2 to 4 days each, you'll get a severe, localized pain in your head, usually on the right side just behind the temple. These are recurring, cluster migraine headaches. The doctors don't know what's causing them (though it's most likely general stress), and there's no effective treatment. So about half of your waking existence will be spent in fairly significant pain. These headaches came with age, starting at 34.

(5) Since you work up to 100 hours per week, it'll be a long, long time before you have sex again. It's already been six months, and there's no end in sight to this new, involuntary celibacy. It's not that big of a deal, really, since your sexual peak passed twenty years ago. In fact you're not too far away from a ****** prescription. The upside is that when you do find any extra time, you shouldn't have a problem getting sex. If nothing else, chicks seem to dig the car.

(6) Let's talk debt...it's pretty well under control, but you'll spend somewhere between 10 and 20 hours a month just paying bills and managing money. This may not seem bad at first, but it'll soon become your least favorite thing to do. The salary may seem nice when you say the number out loud, but believe me when I say it all goes away. Quickly. Absorbed, like water by a sponge.

(7) You have a gut. You don't overeat, and you get enough exercise. But you still have an oversized gut. Your body's metabolism changed sometime around age 32, and now it's practically impossible to change its shape. Especially now that you don't have any time to put into it. Consider it "nature's little joke". And another obstacle to getting sex the few times you may ever find time for it.

(8) This one is sort of good and bad news: You're not living under anyone else's roof anymore. It's entirely up to you to pay for food, clothes, rent, car, gas, insurance, electricity, ISP, cable TV, phone, medical expenses, dental expenses, pet care, and everything else that comes up. And remember, the money gets soaked up faster than you can imagine, so you have to pay close attention all the time, lest you'll go into the hole no matter how much was there a few minutes before.

(9) You're VERY hairy now. You'd consider waxing except that it might put you in the hospital for weeks. Just live with it!

(10) Taxes.....mmmmmm, taxes. You'll be giving up well over 1/3 of your salary in taxes. I like to think of it as "owning the government"; it seems to make it sting a little less. And with a combination of consulting and salary, you'll have to be judicious about reporting your taxes correctly. This will take hours and hours, and if you make a mistake along the way the IRS will come and take your stuff and put you in prison. The upside is that you work for a tax services company...you can have your taxes done for free. But it's still a lot of work and worry. You'll come to hate the month of April.

(11) And finally, your back hurts a lot of the time now. But with as bad as the migraine headaches will be, you'll hardly notice.

...This by far isn't all you'll "experience" as an old fart with a technology career, but it's the high points. I left the bad stuff off the list to keep from scaring you too much.

Oh, one last thing...not sure what your sexual orientation was before, but you're a heterosexual now. You have an unusually consistent preference for petite women with blue eyes and blonde hair, and they oddly seem to have a preference for you as well. Don't question it, just roll with it.

That's about it! Now excuse me, I don't want to be late to my first day of school. Just point me towards the virgin cheerleaders and I'll be on my way.

"Come here, sweetheart. Have I got some things to show you!"

Correction: We can drive at age 15 You have to do parent taught drivers ed, then get your permit. Then get a form from your school (forgot what it's called it's been a while), then go up to the drivers place and take the test to get your hardship license. There are certain specifications you have to meet though.

School starts monday for me. 10am through 2pm. I don't think I'm going to go.

yeah, i'm back.

In the UK you cannot drive until 17. I'd rather keep you brats in school before I let you out on the roads.

I go back on the 6th of September.....senior year, and I love it!

I'm in all 3 band classes (concert band, wind ensemble and jazz band), I have a "technology apprenticeship" that works into my study hall and counts for a full credit, I have no science or math classes (I dread those two) and the big thing is, we're starting at a brand new high school, since our old one is 66 years old and falling apart...and it's really nice. So I'm pumped for it.

and I REALLY REALLY wish I had my license....I just gotta get a little more practice in and take the test.
