Winamp 'reacts slowly' (with normal start up time)

Hello,

Currently, I'm having the following problem:

(Note beforehand: the problem has risen all of a sudden, without changes to my system (Vista) et cetera. Also, more then enough CPU power and memory space to keep it running normally, as is had always did).

So, what is the situation?

I use three 'tabs' (genre -> artist -> album), but currently, the 'album tag' reacts extremely slow. I can take up to 6 seconds (!) to show the albums of a specific artists, disregarding the size of their discography. The 'artist tab' reacts slow as well, although a bit faster then the 'album tag' which is frustrating when listening to a variety of bands or artists.

Is this a known problem, or better, something that can be easily solved? Kind regards,

Jelle

Yeah, I use three panes, didn't really know to to describe it, I'm sorry

Currently, I have "8189 items or 92.54 GB" in Winamp. I don't know which version I have, is it possible to see this somewhere? Although I believe that I have the latest version, as I have the "Check for new version of Winamp at startup"-option checked ever since I began using Winamp.

However, the amount of music in Winamp has always been high (though steadily increasing over time), but not in huge amount of GB's.

I've closed Winamp in Task Manager as well, no different results so far when restarting it.

Hi Zondagavond,

Your configuration looks ok to me. Someone with more experience may spot something.

Your artwork data cache files may be corrupted. I suggest you shutdown Winamp and delete or move them to another folder and let Winamp recreate them when it is restarted.

They are in your "C:\Users\Jelle\AppData\Roaming\Winamp\Plugins\ML" folder. This folder is hidden by default. You may need to enable the option to show hidden folders in Windows Explorer. The files begin with the word "art" and have an ".dat" or ".idx" extension. Some follow the word "art" with a number. The active ones will have the date and time you last shutdown Winamp, but I suggest you delete or move them all.

in addition to that, but done separately, while winamp is closed, disable the audioscrobbler plugin by adding .de to the filename extension and see if the responsiveness improves.

Just tried it, but didn't increased the responsiveness.

However,

This suddenly worked, when I took something else other then (Big) Bento but Big Bento is the only skin I've ever used. Haven't downloaded additional skins either.

Strange, and frustrating, as I like Big Bento a lot.

Yes, the problem comes back then, unfortunatly. I downloaded a random new skin (S7Reflex) and that worked without any problem.

Quite frustrating, and odd, that's for sure. Any other things I could try?

Ok, now is becomes really strange. Scaling is normally on 100% -> works slow.

However, when I go to 75% or 150% it suddenly works without any problems

It gives the same situation for both Bento skins. At this moment I've scaling on 97% and it works fine, but 100% (default) gives the same problem. Even though it worked fine up until a few days ago. Other skins on 100% work fine as well.

I'm using a GTX 460 with the same driver and have no problems.

What is so strange is that it only happens with the Bento skins at 100% scaling, makes no sense. Something happened, if you can remember the day, do a search for all files added or modified on that day. Look for anything that doesn't fit with what you were doing.

someone had this issue years back but i cannot find the thread about it, though i don't remember there being a solution to it either (and we're talking years so it's unlikely the driver version being the cause). all i remember was they gave up on things and just left things slightly scaled.

You can always try ClassicPro's default Bento skin (see link in signature - same look but different layout).

If your getting the same problem in cpro too the problem might be related to skins that have an albumart object. Maybe test with the "Winamp Modern" skin too (with the Album Art window open)

ClassicPro© v2.01 : This plugin allows you to use cPro skins in Winamp. ClassicPro skins are all SUI skins and loads very quickly. ClassicPro skins is even easier to skin than Winamp Classic skins. A new layout have been added since version 2.

@ MrSinatra: see Aminifu's reply regarding the driver. I use only one monitor, and I've no idea wat nView is. Using or not using album-covers has no effect. I only have the album art of the album currently playing on top (with song / album information), but no album art in the "album pane" (only text).

@ Aminifu: nothing specific happened that day. No updates, et cetera. Maybe it's just some strange problem with a small statistic chance of happening?

@ DrO: that sounds not to hopefull, but at this moment I'm using 97% scaling (as I'm unable to get 98% en 99% automatically goes to 100% strangely).

@ pjn123: I've downloaded Winamp ClassicPro© v1.15 an used the classic Bento-skin, but it does not show the cover of the album currently playing. How can I change that? As I'm quite 'not knowledgable' about these things, I'm sorry.

Hi Zondagavond,

I think MrSinatra (in post #20) was referring to my suggestion in post #10 that your album art cache files might be corrupt. I assume you were/are not comfortable messing with those files. Since you only have the issue with the Nullsoft Bento skins, those files are probably ok.

nView is a support utility that is sometimes installed with nVidia drivers. There are other services that are installed that are usually not needed. There is a small chance one or more of these are causing the problem. The guide (linked below) explains what these utilities and services are.

http://www.tweakguides.com/NVFORCE_1.html

Hopefully the cPro Bento skin will not have the problem at 100% scaling and you will like it, once you get used to the differences from Nullsoft's Bento. I have been using another cPro skin for a few months and I like the way they combine the best features of the standard modern and classic Winamp skins.

Good luck.

Zon,

i think he'd agree that its worth trying or checking. it may not be the cause, but just b/c he doesn't have the issue, (and neither did i, with either driver), doesn't mean you won't. if you want to hunt this thing down, you gotta try everything you can think of. often are the times i dismissed something as "not the cause" only to find out it was.

My apologies for the late reply, I was quite busy the last few days.

@ pjn123: thank you! I figured it out. The pro_Big Bento skin wordt perfectly on 100%, so from that perspective, the problem is "solved"

@ Aminifu: I'll look into it!

@ MrSinatra: my apologies for understanding it in the wrong way. However, I'm not really safe with messing with those things (as my knowlegde about it is very low), but I'll keep it in mind.

I'll try both suggested options the upcoming days, and will post the results.

Hi Zondagavond,

Did you re-enable your Audioscrobbler plug-in? If you have been having trouble with it, another user has reported finding a version that works in Windows 7 and Windows 8 with the current version of Winamp, so it should also work in Vista.

Look at the last post (#6) in the thread linked below.

I do not have a Last.fm account, or doesn't that matter?

The plug-in was listed in your configuration report in post #9 and MrSinatra suggested you disable it in post #11. Then or before you had upgraded to the current version of Winamp at some point.

I was just curious if you had re-enabled it (if you disabled it) and whether it was a contributor to the scaling problem. Then I read the post from others having problems with Audioscrobbler with the current version of Winamp.

Since you don't have a Last.fm account, may I ask what were you (or are you) using Audioscrobbler for?

I used to have it, but deleted it quite a while ago. So, I tried:

- with both plug-ins
- with only the new one and the other one deleted
- without both plugins

Both didn't have a new effect. However, and this is strange:

- When I set scaling to 100% and opacity to 90% (or even 99%) its suddenly works fine

The default for both scaling and opacity is 100%. I have never changed either one, so have no experience with what may happen when either or both are changed.

It seems that some of these Windows gimmicks (like opacity variations) are more trouble than they are worth. I assume the performance depends on the graphics card and driver (and cpu) and what other windows are open at the same time. Retrieving stuff from the hard drive can also slow down over time (as the drive fills up and becomes fragmented). Have you defragged your drive lately?

more indication to me that its your driver/hardware. it SHOUDN'T be, but its looking more likely.

the next place i'd start looking is nview, nvidia control panel, etc... to see if any settings on those have an effect.

Today, I was 'asked' to install a new driver version and now everything works fine on the standard settings.

Thank you all a lot for your help
