Setup loop in Win 8

The latest version (dec 2012) cannot be started in Win 8. When you start Winamp, you get the Winamp Setup window. After you set it all up and click Finish in order to launch Winamp, Win 8 gives you the User Account Control warning, then Winamp loops back to the Setup Window. It's neverending.

try right clicking the setup file, then clicking run as administrator.

might help, might not. win8 isn't officially supported yet but it works for some folks.

people have been saying this has been happening since Vista and we never find out the reason so it just keeps on happening. is frustrating it never appears on any machines any devs have access to (even doing complete OS installs).

so to the OP, _exactly_ what type and version of Windows 8? and what is the type of your account? (standard, admin, etc).

[edit]
i've tried again with both an admin and standard account on a clean Win8 x64 English install and at no point does it do what is being described. as i've let it install everything apart from the browser plug-ins and when at the end of the setup process under admin it just works, and on the standard account it does a uac prompt and entering the admin password or not still allows Winamp to start.

Possible causes:

1. Some cleanup app (eg. WindowWasher, TracksEraser, etc) is deleting winamp.ini
If this is the case, configure said app not to delete Winamp's config files.

2. Some 3rd-party plugin is causing Winamp to crash, thus preventing writing to winamp.ini
(unlikely to be the case if it's a first-time clean install).

3. winamp.ini file has the read-only attribute
With Winamp closed, go to the %AppData%\Winamp folder, right-click winamp.ini, uncheck read-only.

Open winamp.ini in Notepad.
Edit the following line:

[WinampReg]
IsFirstInst=0
NeedReg=0

ie. change the value from 1 to 0

hmm, but that doesn't explain it for first-time installs on a clean OS install.

It also happens on a clean OS install when Winamp is the first "extra" thing installed?
Hmm, sorein never mentioned this....

that seems to be the case, was a recent post in bug reports about it as well (and am sure i can find out others) but the only thing i've not tried is doing it on a non-English version of Win8 (was the only thing different from what i've been trying it out on and even then i'm doubtful it can be reproduced).
