Miss Nine - Live at Romm 26, Rome, Italy

She's driving a harder beat since she accepted a residency at Mynt. I like it simply because I prefer that style more. However, she's lost a small amount of her beautiful mixing finesse.

fc*uk - Hallowfreaknween

Some issues. My screw up with Traktor; none of the tracks were analyzed. Gain, stripe, beat grids all out of whack. Did not notice until the last track. I was flying solo and had to remember how to work for my money, gah!

That's why it's a demo. Spent too much time on custom remixes this afternoon to plan the set proper. May replace in under 24 hours from the one from tonight.

Halloween parties at clubs; they are a treat. About the only time you can pound the dance floor for 60 minutes and never once give up. There is just an energy there that does not go away and wants more.

Demo tape off to igloofest too. I wants to play there!

Chemical Brothers - 3 Little Birdies Down Beats

Why is 99% of electronic music so nauseatingly repetitive? It could really be great if this weren't the case.

[insert music theory discussion here]

Because all music is written that way. Sure the length of the repeat is different, but it's all highly structured. That's why most rock songs are about 4 minutes, most dance tracks about 6-8 minutes, and most rap tracks are 2.5-3.5 minutes.

X bars of this, Y bars of that, teardown, build up, X bars of this, Y bars of that. Electronic just has the longest pattern (16, rarely 8).

To understand electronic, you need to remember where it came from and what it was replacing. Disco baby. They wanted to build a mood and provide an experience. Bambaataa, Flash, Knuckles were also using LP's (and let's face it, these three made electronica what it is today). When these three were tearing up disco tracks the loops were long; they needed time to set the needle and beat match ... and remember a loop was playing the same part of the same song on two different players. That simply took time; hence dance is built on 16 bar loops; 8 if you were fast.

My biggest complaint against rock is why do the drums and guitar always follow each other. The thing is, if you hear something that does not, it seems off.

If electronic changes too fast, you can't dance to it. Dancing was the point; it was the disco hall for the young punks of the time.

I'm fine with keeping the tempo consistent throughout a track, which is really all you need to dance, and even maintaining key or occasional recurring theme for continuity, and I'm even fine with 16 bar phrases if they're interesting enough, but I'm not fine with 64 or more bars with next to nothing new added. It makes me want to get up into the dj's face and shout "fucking do something already". Hell, if someone like Beardyman doesn't even use tracks to help him and he can keep things varied and interesting, why can't DJs with prerecorded tracks keep up? I was never a big name DJ, but when I did work sets in Pittsburgh, Youngstown, and Cleveland, it wasn't all that hard to keep things fresh and new while ensuring everyone stayed on the floor.

I just get really mad when I hear 8-16 bars of nothing more than quarter notes on a kick drum, then 8-16 more of the same but with off-beat high hat added, then 8-16 more of 2-3 tonal notes, then 8-16 more of who-cares-what's-next... I realize some of that is necessary buffer time for junior DJs to mix one song into the next, but that shouldn't mean I have to wait several minutes before I hear what the track is supposed to be about.
