Why I No Longer Use Winamp

Winamp used to be my favorite player......

loved the features and most of all the visualizations.....

till one of them, with malicious code in it ate half my computer......

any other bad experiences out there ?

i'd really like to use it again, but i'm afraid to.

Malicious code in a visualization preset crashed your system? Sound unlikely. Unless you're describing a situation in which your video adapter had trouble keeping up and couldn't display the viz properly.

But regardless...that's more a matter for the tech support forum, isn't it? Or maybe the relevant visualization forum?

You're certain it had the correct extension? Because, quite frankly, if it was something.avs.exe or whatever, that's nothing to do with Winamp :S.

gtfo, troll

It's your own damn fault for not virus-scanning something before you install it. Nullsoft has no control over that.

If there's a malicious visualization in the Winamp.com database (or did you download it elsewhere, then (bluntly put) fuck off) maybe you should report it and get it removed before it affects others as well?

Just an idea...

For God's sake I use Winamp visualization every single day at least for 2 hours and nothing ever happend to me. Well actulay the worst thing that happend was winamp crasing but nothing more.

This is the first time that I heard this happend and I am sure that it wasn't your winamp. Maybe something else happend, when you were runing winamp, and caused the system to crash. I realy don't think it was winamp.

It's a testament to your own stupidity if you downloaded a rigged AVS file...

Okay, thank you all. If he didn't listen to one person say it, he's not going to listen to all of us saying it. If he's too dumb to not virus scan, then fine. Keeping this thread alive won't solve anything.

Thanks for the advice

I generally do scan files first, this time I didn't.

you'd think the folks posting stuff on the Winamp site would do the same.

You have two positive and mutually exclusive options there, Mr. MP3Artists (and by the way, how many of you are there?)

One: actually enumerate which files you believe were infected, where and when you got them, and what actually happened (I'm sorry, but malicious code can't "eat half of" a computer.)

Two: realize that you're not going to find people who openly dislike winamp on a winamp forum and spend your time in what will doubtlessly be a happier place for you--i.e., a different forum.

I Like Winamp...I still do or wouldn't be posting here now..it used to be my primary player......for many years.

I love the visualizations, fine tuning them etc.

I've made money projecting them on walls at shows....

It's a great player....what is not great is that someone in admin at Winamp.com let malicious code onto the site.

It was an obscure visualization. I bit on it and got stung.

........I guess in the end you get what you pay for...I use (Audition and Creative Media Source).and you have to be willing to live with a problem or two. That's the only time I have had a problem with it......I want to reinstall it.... I miss the visualizations....I imagine I'll reinstall the player I had in 2000.....if that is still possible....we'll find out.

thanks for your response..........

as for your question concerning "how many of us" ......there are many of us and we are all over the world.

the radio show is also getting out to Low Power FM stations and college radio around this country....

hope to have a hundred affiliates by years end......believe me we won't be sending anyone to The Winamp Forums.

take care

Thanks to those who have responded constructively.

if it was malicious it probably didn't come from here.

i'd like to see proof it came from here... nobody else has had any problems.

more likely you got a virus from the internet

could be.....

but very odd that it let loose when I first fired up the vis.

an AVS must contain some kind of executable code, doesn't it ?.....or does it run strictly within Winamp?

I'm not aware of any code injection attacks with AVS presets which couldn't be done much more easily with the installer. The problem is not with Winamp - the problem is that you installed an untrusted file from the internet.

Well your problem was that you downloaded and ran an executable file from an untrustworthy source on the internet, rather than a problem with Winamp. Could happen with just about any program that comes bundled in an installer, I'm afraid.
