Winamp PC crashing samsung galaxy player 5.0

Hello. New to the forums.

I had been using winamp pc program for a few weeks when the other day it started crashing every time I plug in my device. It looks like it crashes once it recognizes the SD card.

Here's what Ive tried so far...

uninstalling program/deleting file folders data and Reinstalling the program.

Reinstalling the device android app.

Factory reset of the phone.

Complete format of SD card.

Deleting the android plugin...but then it wont recognize phone at all.

Tried changing the USB mount type to Media player.

Tried it on a different computer

Tried deleting winamp files on SD card

None of these things changed the outcome of plugging the device in and upon discovery winamp pc crashes. It says winamp encountered an error and must close.

Ive tried contacting support. No response.

I gave up for a while and tried moving on to other programs to manage my music /playlists, but none work as well as winamp so I really want to get this figured out. ANy ideas...please help? PLEASE???????????????

A report from the Info Tool would be handy (http://koopa.meggamusic.co.uk/downlo..._Info_Tool.exe). This lets us see what winamp is configured like.

Look on the Galaxy - you will find three Winamp files in the root of the drive it is monitoring: pmp_usb.ini, winamp_metadata.dat, winamp_metadata.idx

I don't have a Galaxy so don't know if it is monitoring the internal drive or the SD Card.

Also look into %appdata%\Winamp and you will find winamp.ini which has a section in it [pmp_usb] which lists which USB devices Winamp will ignore. Be interesting to see how many devices are blacklisted here.

Finally in %appdata%\Winamp\plugins\ml you will find ml_devices.ini and ml_pmp_device_*.ini (where the * is probably replaced with GALAXY)

As far as I know that is the set of files that keep track of what your phone is when attached to Winamp. If you are trying to reset and start again - did these files also get deleted when you deleted folders from your first step?

My best bet? It could be that the ml_pmp_device_GALAXY.ini file has duff data in it. Open this file in NOTEPAD (and\or paste it into a post here) and I expect we have some duff path in here or other duff data.

>>>>>
Im assuming you are talking about the directory on my pc for this? I can't find this directory. I am looking in c/users/me/appdata/local and there is no winamp folder.

BTW...thanks for taking the time to help me through this. I appreciate it.

At a quick look I can't see anything obvious wrong in the Info Report.

Any chance of posting a copy of %appdata%\Winamp\plugins\ml\ml_pmp_device_GALAXY.ini ? (that isn't the exact name, but it will be in that folder with a name that includes your device name) this can then let me target a few specific questions.

And when you did your reinstall did you wipe out this Winamp Settings folder?

(If you don't know what I mean by %APPDATA% then please say so)

%APPDATA% is shorthand for C:\Users\me\Appdata\Roaming\ on a Windows 7 PC

You can actually just type %APPDATA% into an explorer window or the start menu and the OS will open that location for you. (Also jumps round the fact this is a hidden folder by default)

So, in your specific case, you need to look in C:\Users\Me\Appdata\Roaming\Winamp\Plugins\ML\ and you'll locate the files I am talking about.

In the C/users/me/appdata/roaming/winamp/plugins/ml folder

I have the following folders listed
art

Could it be a corrupt file issue in my music folder? Seems to be somewhat working now...fingers crossed.

some music files were not playable with the new player due to format, so I recoded them with Nero recode 12 to mp3 and that may have been when the issue started. I removed those files and it seems to be working now....will report back tomorrow after rebuilding playlists.

If it is working now, that is the important bit.

What were the file types you recoded? I doubt that would have been it, but some corrupted files have been known to crash Winamp. If you have any examples of those files you could try reintroducing some of them to Winamp and see what it does with them.

I have a backup of my music on an external hard drive. I introduced one of the suspected files from the backup drive (ie didnt even have the samsung player plugged in) ...and winamp crashed.

It has to be something with these few files.

Can you put one of the files up on a hosting site for someone to look at. We can confirm if we get the same crash.

Personally I use http://wetransfer.com/ a lot. There are also the advert laden places like http://www.sendspace.com/ that can be used

Only thing is... this has to be non-copyright files if you are posting them online for others to look at.

It would also help to know what type of file they are. MP3, MP4, ALAC, FLAC ?

Often it is just Bad Tags which can be fixed with something like MP3TAG.de

as you're on build 3516, try downgrading the in_mp3.dll to that from build 3512 -> http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=156839#known2

They are copyrighted files. I could email you one if you PM me an address. They are MP# files. a few used to be WMA and a few were M4a files all were converted to MP3 by nero 12.

Get a copy of MP3TAG from mp3tag.de and use that to re-write the tags in those files. It sounds like you have either a corrupted file or corrupted tags. Sometimes just loading them up and re-writing the tags is enough to repair this kind of issue.

Did these come from a reliable source? Or are they P2P sourced and therefore possibly a bit patchy in quality?

as seems to be being ignored, as its confirmed they're MP3 files, downgrade the in_mp3.dll as that should fix the issue.

Not ignoring you. I appreciate your help. It seems to be working now. Do you recommend i still replace that file?

Not p2p

Two were originally from itunes...and the rest were from a cd...just ripped by a program that saved them as wma files. All were converted to mp3 using nero 12 recode

I ended up just burning them to cd...then re-ripping them to mp3 with wmp 12 with the correct tag info.

As a test I uninstalled everything, reinstalled. Never even connect the galaxy. Opened one of the old corrupted files. Crash. The I copied the in_mp3.dll to the plugins folder as suggested above...opened the corrupted file again....no crash.
