Recommend me an Android?

Recommend me an android phone to ask for for christmas this year, my iphone 3g is showing it's age way too much and i really regret every day i stick with it lately.

as usual price is no option, in fact let's have most spendy first, no diamond studded or electro plated bullshit though, please.

i'll consider any manufacturer/model, i really can't say i like HTC phones at all though, however for carriers i'm limiting it to AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile, no nobodies like cricket/qwest/etc/fly-by-night/back-of-the-van(ish) carriers.

SD card (preferably micro SD unless there's a better format out now) with expandable internal storage (removable or otherwise) is a must as well as .mp3 ringer support and speedy enough hardware to use the ENTIRE .mp3 as the ringer, not some 30 second bullshit (reason i've yet to bother with my ishit) also a touchscreen as well (physical keyboard isn't an issue either way, i've yet to miss it with my current phone) a good amount of base storage (without an SD card) is a definite plus of course and if it's a phone advanced enough to be a bond phone all the better same if it's a clamshell flip-phone type as well.

huge minuses to any sliding crap, i really don't trust it and both phones i've had previously with sliding bullshit did self-fuck because of it.

Motorola is also a big factor so long as it doesn't sacrifice anything essential like a newer/later android OS version or just dumb the phone down in general, i've always liked motorola phones, well constructed and don't feel like cheap plastic toys as much.

looking for somewhere around $200 to $500ish here, if i wind up skipping the new phone i'm probably going for a nice citizen eco-drive watch i like at macy's, so yeah, no bargain bin stuff.

i'm considering:

http://www.engadget.com/product/droid-x

but at the same time i can't help but wonder if i'm aiming low there.

thanks.

I have the droid X. I love it.

volume issues in call at all? i just watched a few review videos of it on youtube and that was like almost the only thing that came up, dude said it didn't always happen but a lot of the time the volume during a call was kinda low and muffled, is it really that bad?

and while we're at it, how's the ringer volume?

i gotta say though, i think this is going to be a pretty one sided result here, i'm already leaning heavily towards the droid x and the reviews i can find seem to say that it's one hell of a device and the competing droid 2 falls just slightly short because of it's smaller display.

And now for a different viewpoint....

I went for a Sony Xperia x10 mini....

Why? after years of using a relatively small form factor Sony Walkman phone I didn't suddenly want to leap up to a massive brick sized android phone, which lets face it, most are.

I wanted something small enough to fit in my pocket without noticing it, small enough to sit in a shirt top pocket without looking stupid.

It suits my needs perfectly, tiny, very powerfull (don't let the small size fool you), decent camera, standard 3.5 headset jack and most important of all ... the girls all go 'oooooh, what's that phone' when you take it out in company

My phone is currently running a generic 2.1 SE firmware, having flashed it myself and it's currently rooted to allow me to remove some of the 'freebie' apps that come bundled with it that will never be used, flashing and rooting took about 40 minutes tops

People won't agree with me, but lurve my mini10

haha, seriously though a full size droid phone would be useless for me, some of the guys at work have them and always have them in hand or strapped to a belt loop, mine tucks away nicely in my pocket, hardly know it's there.

It suits my needs down to the ground, performs as well as any android phone out there and has a very healthy development community behind it at XDA.

and seriously, the volume thing? am i going to be saying "what?" every few seconds on calls with this?

TDM-- There's really NO need to "root" or "jailbreak". It's not as locked down as an iphone and it works a lot better. Audio quality is really good.

I rooted mine as I was really narked that the phone came with a load of pre-loaded network provider crap that I would never use and was only taking up space, crappy game demos and 'music store' apps

When I first did an over the air update, thinking I was getting 2.1, I got even more fucking apps that couldn't be uninstalled, so went to XDA and followed a quite scary user guide into rooting the phone so I could then get on as a superuser to remove these unremovable apps.

I'm all for putting demos and stuff on, but give the user the option to remove them.

Rooting devices now however has moved on, there are many one click rooting tools out there that will root the device with nothing more than a click of an icon

I flashed my xperia with the generic 2.1 rom, so this didn't have any network app crap on it, but it still had stuff I didn't want, I never use the Timescape app that Sony developed, so might as well trash it, save a bit of memory, remove another icon out of the phone, so worth doing if you like to tinker with your device, now I can easily root the device and remove apps with a rootexplorer and my device runs even smoother than it did before, not essential, but you know how us geeks can be....

yeah, trust me, i'd have never kept this POS iphone this long if not for constantly jailbreaking it (i say constantly because of new iOS versions)

also, does the version of android it have on it really matter? like.... if you get one that has 2.1 of the android OS, i guess eventually you can expect to see 2.2 coming down the pipeline? or it's pretty much buy the current model for the more up to date OS?

I should imagine so, 2.1 has just gone live for the xperias and they are already talking about 2.2, in both official channels and the hacking community...

it's about as close as it can be to decided without the money already flying out of my bank account at this point, one of the main issues i had with my iphone was the screen's small size and it's utterly slow innards and not being able to use full .mp3s as ringers.

in other words, the droid x is ahead by miles because or the larger screen size and will probably be my next phone, feel free to keep suggesting though.

This Nexus S looks pretty slick, and in a week or so, you can get one without a contract. It's $529 that way, but you can use it with whatever carrier you want. It will even do VOIP as a SIP device. Maybe you didn't want a carrier at all.

yeah, just sad we still can't get rid of the source.

@RoH: surprisingly enough, i actually don't want a physical keyboard on my phone and i don't see much point in staying with AT&T, my contract had expired, i'm fine with being with verizon instead.

if iPhones are such a bad thing, I'll gladly take that 3G off your hands, for free. It'd make a nice upgrade from my 2G.

No cell service here, so it's an over-glorified iPod and new browser for me.

either way, there are too many yuppies, noobs and people who want one out there to do anything but sell it.

even despite it being two models behind the current, $100 isn't asking as much as i could probably get for it if i jailbreak/unlock it first on request at any rate, those.... educational DMCA provisions, you know.

i just realized it, but it seems like most applications don't actually close when i press the home or back button and keep running in the background, is there some setting i missed somewhere to specify that applications must end when closed or some way to control this from inside of a running app other than the "force close" button in the app settings?

seems just.... bloaty and wasteful for so many apps to run in the background instead of closing by default.

That's how android works......

It's not wastefull on resources, actually very clever the way android handles what's going on in it's memory..

Trust me, it's not hogging your resources, if it bugs you that much you can use a task killer app, but really you shouldn't need it in android 2.1 and higher...

read this for a good guide...

yeah i know what you mean, i just don't see the point of angry birds continuing to run once i'm done playing it

fwiw i'm more concerned about the extra battery life i'm sacrificing, even with the screen brightness set to auto this thing goes through battery charge MUCH faster than the iphone ever did.

i guess it's more the concept that seems wasteful to me, that's like leaving a game open and just alt-tabbing away from it when i'm done instead of quitting, or leaving firefox open when i've finished browsing, or winamp when i don't want to play any media.

Yeah, know what you mean, you will get used to it, I thought it weird at first and obsessed about killing apps of, but since going to 2.1 I've not used a task master and don't notice a difference in battery life.

Yes, the battery drain can be a pain, but playing angry birds for an hour while listening to music with the wifi running and any other kind of service running will zap your battery a bit.

You will get used to it however, trust me, I was loathe to change when I first got my droid phone, in fact I had it, tried it, stopped using it, went back to it a month later forcing myself to 'give it a proper chance' and I've not looked back since

no don't get me wrong, i'm not looking back just....

jeez they need to figure out how to make bigger batteries for these things, especially with how large the screens and screen sizes are getting.

i think the iphone gets around...... 4 hours i'll guess, tops if the screen is actually on that long.
pathetic.

this one, not sure yet, i'd guess around 3-5 at most, but quite possibly 2-3 if that.

it's a great phone and it feels like having a shackle around my ankle gone not using the iphone anymore as well, it had a lag of almost a second (maybe half a second to guess) when i started typing out a text message, the same when i started dialing as well.
this one?
none what so ever, i'd forgotten how fast i could be with a capable touchscreen to type with, first time i've been surprised how fast i can thumb out a text or phonecall in a long time.

Well, unlike the iPhone, you can get a second battery. That's what I did. I got a separate battery and charger at my desk at work. If I run one low, I switch out batteries. I also charge my phone every night.

yeah it's nice to have a removable battery for sure, still..... haven't we figured out how to make them hold enough charge for more than a few hours at most with current phones.

i'd hate to believe that's true, regardless of whether it is or not.
