special link to version 0.99f, released 8/22

Hey all,

Just a note to tell you all that version 0.99f has been released, although I can't post it to nullsoft.com yet (technical reasons), so in the meantime you can download it here:

http://www.geisswerks.com/milkdrop_099f.exe

Special request: Do animated song titles work for you? They don't work on my GeForce 2, but I suspect it's the driver. Please post it here if the song titles do or don't work for you (if not they will look like garbage), along with what brand/chipset video card you've got.

New features in this version:
-added graphical song titles
-added screen borders; can be used to create interesting
feedback patterns when zooming out
-waveforms now blend smoothly!
-finally gave milkdrop an application icon
-added 'U' key to toggle winamp's shuffle feature on/off
-fixed bug with handling of 'r' key when preset menu is up;
now, to rename a file, use INSERT
-fixed a 1-frame-delay bug for warping (caused a lag for
audio-driven 'warps')
-fixed bug where 'progress' variable's value was always 0 in
per-pixel eq's (thanks rovastar)
-removed "F7: show tooltips for menu items" hotkey (needed it
for title animations)
-removed U, I keys (for warp)
-moved T key (for zoom) to I (i=zoom in, I=zoom out)
(T is now used for song titles)
-speed optimization: now using memcpy_MMX to copy
576*2*4=4608 bytes of sound data per frame
-size optimizations: painstakingly shaved 8k off
the .dll
-in windowed mode, when a user resizes the window to a size
that's too large and there's not enough video memory and
MilkDrop closes, it now resets the size of the window for
the next time you run MilkDrop. (before it would just try
to start the next time with the same window position/size
and keep failing.)
-added 'try for RGB overlay before trying YUV-types' checkbox
-added 'try for YUY2 overlay surface before trying UYVY'
checkbox
-added "stereo 3d always on" option (unchecked by default)
-added "clear screen at startup" option (checked by default)
-made soft cut timer reset on hard cuts

At work everything works fine, including song titles.
W2K with Sp2, TNT2 with leaked Detonator 14.60.

At home my system will not display any song title at all.
Athlon 700, W2K with Sp2, Kyro II with latest drivers (1.07.0114).

A solution?

Hi Ryan,

Again, another amazing effort on MilkDrop, the song titles look
awesome...

Firstly, not sure if this is a bug, but I had to uncheck the "clear screen at startup" checkbox to get the animated song titles to appear.
I think this is checked by default, and may be the reason why some people can't see the titles, it took me a while to work out.

Also, a couple of possible bugs (although it only seems to happen on my computer, so it may be just my machine)... but firstly, when I have the preset rating on, MilkDrop runs through all the presets really quickly (ie. 150 in 10 sec) before it decides to actually stick to a preset. I have seen it operate normally on other machines and can't work out why this is happening. Also, it also seems to take a while for MilkDrop to actually pick up the beat - that is, when it loads, it decides to completely ignore the music for about 10 seconds, before it kicks in and looks normal. Needless to say, both of these problems combined get a little frustrating, although they appear to be specific to my computer. I've tried it on 3 others and all of them pick up the beat immediately, and don't make the presets go totally crazy at the start. I use SQR crossfader, but not sure if this is the problem.

My machine is a Celeron 667, 128MB RAM, Intel i710 8MB video card.

Oh, and another request re the animated song titles, would it possible to implement similar options to those you had in Geiss regarding when they come up? For example, being able to have the song title come back every 30 sec, rather than being there for a set amount of time.

Also, is F7 supposed to bring up the song title at any time? Because all it does on my machine is to get rid of it when it is floating round, and then brings it back again - it would be good if you could bring it up at any time by pressing F7, rather than just being able to have it appear at the start of a song.

Some other suggestions (although these aren't problems, just my opinion) - would it be possible to keep the animation going permanently? Even when setting animation time to 240 secs (so it will stay on the whole song), it floats around for about a minute then stays still, it would be good if it continued moving about for the whole time it was on the screen. Perhaps also having an option to bring up the time as an animation as well as the song title?

Anyhow, great work yet again, thanks!

Thx dark illusion for that hint. It now works perfectly on my system.

Only sometimes, even if I do not change anything in the options, Milkdrop runs through all the presets...

I had the same problem. I use the SQR crossfader too. I my view the beat detection is completly out of sync with crossfading enabled AND there will ne NO hard cuts. I tested last night every damn option in the crossfader... nothing worked yet. So I had to load the continuous preset (disable crossfader). Now everything works fine.
No crossfading but Milkdrop now works perfectly... and that is more important

The text animation sorta works.
The animation is fine, but the text is all garbled - looks like random squares of pixels. Probably the same problem you have.
GeForce2
win2k directX8
detonator 12.90

I wanna congratulate on the border effects - awesome.

And I think the Nautilus preset needs some tweaking - if you leave it long enough, it goes to fullbright.

guys with SQR crossfade

this plugin is actually causing 'the problem' - make its buffer smaller so that MD detects beats faster or use L/R arrows to move in song at least for amount of time you have set in SQR crossfader. This works and you must have had these problems also with other vis plugins.
