Image Conversion?

Anyone know of a program that can convert .bmps to .gifs, keeping the EXACT same shades, of the EXACT same colors? I need it perfect.

Can anyone help? Thanks.

Does it have to be gif? A png-24 will be lossless and look exactly the same.

Could I just do:

<img src = "http://Stuff.png">

?

My question: Does it effect my html at all to use png, instead of .gif? If not, post a link. That would be awsome .

Should work. What is it for? Different image formats are good for different things.

Banners and other things. I cant really explain so that it would make total sense. I'm converting Images that are mostly blocks of color with a white line through them (dont ask. It's for a website), and I need the Color to stay EXACTLY the same as before the conversion.

Your image needs to have an ALT attribute, and it's recommended to have the title attribute aswell.

<img src="blah.gif" alt="Short Description" title="same as alt">

If you change that to:

<img src="blah.gif" alt="Short Description" title="same as alt" />

It's XML-compliant as well.

He just asked for advice on a program that could convert a bitmap to a different format without quality loss. There's no need to start up with the code validation crap in here.

Anyways, converting it to png would probably be your best bet. Pngs don't compress quite as much as jpgs and gifs, but they're lossless. In your code, all you have to do is replace "imagename.gif" with "imagename.png" and you should be good to go.

I use Paint Shop Pro. Excellent program, and free if you know how to "acquire" it.

Why not? this isn't a tech support forum. Besides, he might learn something.

Actually, if used correctly, PNG can be just as effective compression as JPEG/GIF (with the added benifit of lessless compression and lack of licensing/patenting worries).

Because there's a shitload of other threads already on the first page of GD right now concerning that. If you want to start talking code, go do it in one of the other threads.

I think that depends more or less on the type of image you're working with (pixel dimensions, number of colors used, etc). Large 16m color bitmaps compressed to a png of the same color depth will have larger filesizes than the same images compressed to a gif, since gifs only allow 256 colors max. But if you're using a bitmap with only a handful of colors, then yes, a gif will be just as good as a png (assuming the colors in the original bitmap are the same as in the standard websafe 256 color palette). The only reason why I would use a gif is for a small animation, though. Jpgs are good for things like posting attachments here on the forums, or other images where filesize is more important than quality. Anything else, I use png.

I would use PNG, if only for the fact that no matter what setting I have a compressor for it on, they come out monstrously huge.

I've tried giving squak advice before on using css and valid xhtml, but he's obviously not interested so I don't bother.

Irfanview rules. I've had it for a long time now, my favourite image program by far.

Darn, I can't think of anything to put here.
