Reporting Bugs:

Please report any issues with the beta in this thread only.
Make sure your report is complete, according to the sticky threads in Bug Reports, ie.
Clean install, no 3rd-party plugins, full step-by-step method of reproduction, relevant system specs, exact error messages, screenshots, which skin (one of Classic, Modern, or Bento only, or all three), links to sample files, etc.
If error reports, screenshots, sample files, etc are smaller than 100kb, then please attach them to your post here. Otherwise, please upload to one of stashbox.org (recommended), mediafire.com, or sendspace.com and post the url here (no rapidshare or imageshack or similar links please).
Note that incomplete/lame bug reports may be totally ignored.

Particular areas which need testing are:

  • Winamp Bento (SingleUI skin)
  • Album Art support (view/pane in ml) & Downloader service
  • Unified File Editor (CoverArt/Advanced/Extra tabs, for mp3, flac, ogg, wma, m4a)
  • Media Library navigation tree (drag+drop items, collapse/expand, etc)
  • New ML Local Media filters/panes/config
  • New PMP filters/panes/config
  • Check for any gen_ff/skinning bugs
  • New Podcast views/features
  • CDDB2.5 features/editor
  • Playlist Generator (play tracks similar to)
  • Auto-Tagger (in Alt+3 File Info & Send To menu)

Notes:

-Winamp Bento skin does not appear in the Skin Selector list in the installer,
-so for now, you'll need to select it from the Skins menu after Winamp opens.

-The new Mass Auto-Tagger (ml_autotag) only appears in the English installer options
-and not in any of the other translations. Sorry, but it was a last-minute addition.

-Album Art support is almost complete, but not quite...
-Lookup order: embedded (in tags), %album%/cover/folder.jpg/gif/png.
-Note: The cache is the art*.* files in the "Plugins\ml" folder
-(art.dat, art.idx, art60.dat/idx, art90.dat/idx, art120.dat/idx).
-Downloader access via: Art icon rt-click menu, unified file info & pmp edit info box
-Currently saves as %album&.jpg in the containing folder.
-See "Known Issues" section below for more...

-mp3surround is playback only for now (no encoding).
-You can find tracks at www.all4mp3.com/music/

-Playlist Generator (rt. click ml/pledit items > Play tracks similar to):
-Notes:
-1) Manual config via: Prefs > Plugins > Media Library > ml_plg.dll > config
-2) Initial Scan may take some time. The more files in your mldb, the longer...
-3) Obeys the Play/Enqueue as default action in ML Prefs
-4) Database stored in Winamp\Plugins\Gracenote (along with all other GN/CDDB files).
-If getting "error initializing" messages, you'll need to delete cddbplm.pdb/idx/gcf files.

-Re: Skinned ml scrollbars
-For support, Wasabi version needs to be specified as 1.3 in skin.xml, eg.
-<WasabiXML version="1.3">
-Also note that v1.3 skins no longer use the internal freetype font renderer.

Known Bugs/Issues:

-Winamp Bento skin does not appear in the Skin Selector list in the installer, so for now, you'll need to select it from the Skins menu after Winamp opens (important enough to mention twice) *

-On startup, the Bento skin can occassionally leave a portion of the media library drawn on top of/underneath other windows. It goes away when you move a window over it. Note that the same can happen if switching from a skin where both the Video/Vis and ML windows are open, which results in the Video or Vis tab being active in Bento instead of ML (click the Media Library tab to fix). *

-In the Bento skin, the Media Library will occassionally not fill the entire tab (switch to Video tab and back to fix). *

-Bento skin: When setting is enabled, vbr display for mp3's changes too rapidly *

-DWM thumbnails on Vista show the Classic skin when a Modern skin is minimized, or components of the Classic skin when the vis/vid drawer is attached & open in the Winamp Modern skin **

-New CDDB features may still be a bit buggy (eg. genre saves with "General" at front)

-Album Art retrieval criteria and writing/saving isn't configurable... yet!

-Alt+3 album art editor is fairly incomplete, and also won't find all album art.

-'Get Album Art' doesn't find compilations very well, and doesn't find art when album names have "notes" at the end like "Dark Angel [EP]".

-Album Art API doesn't deal with illegal filename characters yet < : \ " / ? | >

-Embedded art doesn't show in Artwork tab of File Info (but displays ok in Album Art views/window/etc)

-Winamp crashing when attempting to view some PNG/GIF coverart in Alt+3 Editor *

-Winamp Modern songticker: padding issues & winshade shadow on first/last char *

-Some AVS presets are broken in this build. Sorry, this is a compiler related issue and should hopefully be fixed in time for 5.5 Final

-Station Info window is broken (blank content) (I think we're getting rid of this anyway / not sure?)

-We're seeing a few reports of crashing under Vista (crash on exit, when switching skins, when running vis plugins, etc). These issues are being looked into and, if reproduced, will hopefully be addressed/fixed for the next beta and/or in time for 5.5 Final (note that they mostly tend to be related to the 'DWM thumbnails' fix). Let us know if there are any improvements with Preview 2. If the problem persists then please include a full detailed Bug Report (see above).

-Some cbr MP3's are reported as vbr in File Info

-Custom Genre not being saved for MP3 when typed into ID3v2 tab of File Info *

-Winamp crashes when clicking the "Delete All" button in the Advanced tab of File Info for Vorbis files (or if using "Delete" when only one field is present/populated) *

-[ml_plg] Playlist Generator config: 1) 'Playlist Length' field allows text input (but should be limited to the drop-down selection only). 2) The 'Reset Database' button automatically deletes the plg database without any confirmation dialog. *

-[ml_plg] Multiple "Playlist Generator failed to Initialize" error messages on Winamp startup, when Gracnote/plg database is corrupt (more info here and here) *

-Mass Auto-Tagger sometimes might come up with mismatched results (eg. titles are the same or mixed up for different tracks on same album) *

-If genre is empty it remains empty after using File Info Auto-Tagger *

-Random weird bold font glitch in Local Media views *

-Font not updating in Local Media views when disabling 'use same font as playlist' option*

-The Local Media column immediately to the left of Rating doesn't remember resize changes after switching views *

-'Files of type' drop-down selection is broken in the Add/Open Files Dialog *

-Alas, Winamp 5.5 is no longer compatible with Win9x (Win 98/ME), and all support for those OS'es has now been discontinued.

KEY
* = Fixed internally
** = Reverted (feature removed internally)

Sweet! My ipod doesn't seem to be crashing anymore, great job it's great so far. Love bento.

EDIT: Sigh, it does not crash but when I add anything it screws up half the songs on the ipod and they just don't play. ANd it doesn't remember what kind of ipod it is, it asks every time I plug it in. WHen I try and play a song it doesn't work and just starts cycling through other songs. I can play the affected songs on the ipod from winamp though. Vista Ultimate 32 Bit, Ipod Video 5th gen.

Hey...
You fixed the songticker lag - yey..
You fixed the classic songticker thing (and we can also drag it ) - yey

But you did not fix the modern skin songticker spacing (when using "Modern style")..
If you look at it, it is more space on the right side, than it on the left side... Try to adjust that (with, or without my numbers..)

My file is something like this but this works only when leftpadding and rightpadding is set to 0...
So, if you are going to use these numbers, paddings have to be on 0 (or something like that)..
Also, look at the blending on the ends, it may change when setting the paddings to 0... Look at it..
You can try to adjust the text spacing, and the blendings...

<!-- Songticker -->
<Songticker
x="10" y="45"
w="-18" h="21"
/>

<Text
id="Infoticker"
x="10" y="45"
w="-18" h="21"

Keep up the good work..

Alright, apparently my ipod is working fine, but the album I was using to test it is the only one not working. When I try and play this album it just cycles through all the songs in the album. I have tried re-adding it to no avail. I also tried editing tags/re adding it in winamp then adding it to the ipod also but they just won't play on the ipod. They worked fine with 5.35.

@Juanus
No, that shouldn't be happening.
It's been reported a few times now, eg. here
but we've still not been able to reproduce it yet....

@screaming_jesus
We were worried at first, until your 2nd post.
Hmmm, do you maybe have iTunes installed and open at the same time?
If not, then what file format are the files?
Are they in a compatible format, or do they need to be transcoded?
Are all the tags filled in (Artist, Album, Title, etc)
If mp3, have you tried testing them with eg. EncSpot or MP3Utility to see if there's any corruption?
Any other detailed info you can provide might help, including links to sample files...

Yes, DJ Egg, I just wanted to make sure you knew it was still happening. Continued to happen even when I closed winamp and restarted. But here is something odd, the problem went away when I installed the essentials pack. <shrug>

sorry to report such a small issue in PREVIEW 1 of the beta.
but using Bento
go to browser, quick links, add new sub folder, the "X" tooltip shows Exit winamp...and it shouldn't be...
the tooltip is also wrong with "edit quick links"

also would be useful that esc key could work here, to exit that menu

( i'm using preview 1 )
will "test" preview 2 tomorrow.
thankx

Can someone check if retrieving album artwork works for streams if you are behind a proxy? It lags a lot when the song changes. I think I remember seeing album art when I am not behind a proxy.

One more thing, will Winamp ever support Auto Proxy configure URLs?

Re: Font problem

@ Juanus - welcome to the font problem club. What size jacket do you wear?

So in installed the latest BETA, v5.5 (Build 1568) BETA, and the previous font issues
I reported here are no longer occurring. Moving from the ML's Local Media View to
other views does not seem to affect the font size as it did before.

However, all is still not well ...

  1. Close Winamp ensuring the property circled in red here is checked.
  2. Open Winamp
  3. Go to the ML's All Music view
    (although from my tests this seems to happen on any/all ML views)
  4. Open the Media Library preferences
  5. In the "Advance Library Preferences" group,
    toggle the "Media Library uses same font as Playlist Editor" property on & off
For me, this will adjust the font in the ML Tree, but NOT in the main window of the ML.
I would expect it to adjust the font in both areas.

Note that this same property had an affect on the issue logged against Preview #1
v5.5 (Build 1550) BETA.

Re: Font problem

Another observation on the font size issue ...

  1. Close Winamp ensuring the property circled in red here is checked.
  2. Open Winamp
  3. Go to the ML's All Music view
    (although from my tests this seems to happen on any/all ML views)
  4. Open the Playlist preferences
  5. In the "Playlist Editor Appearance" group,
    play with the "Playlist font size" by adjusting the value.
As I adjust the value, the font in the ML Tree and the Playlist will adjust from one size to the other. However, for me, within the main window of the ML ... as I adjust the value, there is a momentary flash of a bold font in-between the two sizes.

Can anyone replicate this behavior?

Hmmm, do you maybe have iTunes installed and open at the same time?
If not, then what file format are the files?
Are they in a compatible format, or do they need to be transcoded?
Are all the tags filled in (Artist, Album, Title, etc)
If mp3, have you tried testing them with eg. EncSpot or MP3Utility to see if there's any corruption?
Any other detailed info you can provide might help, including links to sample files...

All the tags are filled in they are VBR MP3's that worked fine on the ipod when I had 5.35, they were working fine until I installed 5.5 and deleted one of them to test to see if it would still crash then that whole album stopped playing.. I did not have itunes open at the same time, I even formatted the ipod with iTunes made sure it was closed re-added everything and those songs via winamp still do not play on the ipod, the strange thing is I can plug in the ipod and play them from the ipod via winamp. I just installed encspot How do I check for corruption? from what I see I don't think it is corrupted.
Here's encspot showing the mp3's in question

just a little happy report: the CUE Player plugin (third party) is composed by in_cue.dll and gen_cue.dll; gen_cue.dll crashed everytime Winamp 5.5 b1550 (-> removed), but in new 5.5 b1568 all is ok

Did you maybe have an older version of the EP installed prior to that?

@synthetiq
The tooltips are fixed for Preview 2 (now says 'Close Window')
Alas, usage of the Esc key hasn't been implemented though.

@lordsky
AlbumArt doesn't work for streams. It's a local files only thing.

@jph6t
Yes, I'm seeing the same behaviour
('Wow', I hear you say, 'He reproduced one of my bugs, at last!')
After checking or unchecking 'ML uses same font as playlist', the font in the ml panes doesn't auto update (but does in the ml tree).
I can get the font in the ml panes to change by going to Prefs > Playlist and adjusting the font size and back again.

[Edit]

Dang! DrO says he can't repro and it all works fine for him. Maybe it's some plugin to blame then. I really aren't sure.

Funnily enough, DrO says he sees the brief flash of bold text thing (the issue in your 2nd post), whereas I don't. Funny old world, isn't it?!

@screamin_jesus
Hmm. I'm not sure what's going on there at all. One for Will, perhaps?

@flocksoft
Cool. Even though I had CuePlayer installed all the way through 5.36 beta & 5.5 preview 1 stages, and didn't notice any problems. Then again, I probably didn't use it much either, heh.

Whenever I install winamp, I do a complete uninstall and then delete the folder. I don't transfer settings or playcounts or anything like that. I just reinstall and then do a rescan of my music folder. I wish I could be more help on this problem.

Very nice build! Thank you for the new preview!

Modern spectrum analyzer is tweaked nicely (in the last build, it was peaking on every beat). Now I don't need to use replay gain, which would've brought most of my songs down -9db!

Album art refreshing seems much snappier as well.

As always, keep up the excellent work!

Oops! My bad. This will be fixed for the next release. For now, I recommend you manually remove the playlist generator plugin by deleting this file:
c:\program files\winamp\plugins\ml_plg.dll

Or see DJ Egg's post a bit further down the page for more info/fixes.

you can probably fix this by deleting the gracenote db, which will be in:
<settings folder>\winamp\plugins\gracenote\

I've edited the first post to refer to the Playlist Generator bug, and how to fix it.
Note that the ml_plg-specific database files in the Plugins\Gracenote folder are:
cddbplm.pdb, cddbplm.idx, cddbplm.gcf

Do NOT delete any other files in that folder (the DLL's), else you'll completely break Gracenote CDDB, Auto-Tagger and Playlist Generator, and also lose your cd database (cddb.db) in the process.

Great, thanks.

Very minor album art issue I noticed:

When enabling album art in the enlarged playlist, switching from full view to windowshade mode, back to full again makes the album art go away :/ In other words, it doesn't seem to remember that it should show album art again when switching back to full.

Not sure if this was planned behavior or not.

Although many Vista issues have been addressed, we're pretty certain that the remaining issue is related to this:

* Fixed: DWM Thumbnails & Flip3D for Modern skins in Vista

DWM thumbnails doesn't seem to like milkdrop, and maybe other vis plugins.
We could just remove the fix (which means that the offscreen classic window thumbnail will show again, instead of modern/bento/etc skin), or somehow try come up with a better hack....

Winamp 5.x crashes when I insert my Sansa Express MP3 player in my computer's USB port.

Also, it would have been nice if the built-in web browser was built using the Gecko engine and NOT from AOL Browser. With the exposure that this media player has it could've beat the PANTS off Songbird!

Also, this would be the ULTIMATE player if the functionality for the PaceMaker plugin was integrated into the player. Being able to bend pitches and change tempos is CRUCIAL I tell you!

Aside from the above, great work!

Seems like you have it under control, but I would just add my report that I just had a hard crash upon close.

BTW, DWM thumbnails are displaying correctly in winshade and "collapse window" mode (for lack of a better name) but not when Bento is open fully.
