GTA in China!

(well not exactly)

Quote:
JAPANESE consumer electronics giant Sony will launch its popular PlayStation2 game console in China in a few weeks.

The machine will be made available in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Chengdu from December 20, before Sony expands sales areas in other cities to develop the home computer entertainment market in mainland China.
The game console will be priced at ¥1,988, compared with a price of ¥1,493 yuan on the Amazon.com web site.

It will also release two game titles, Ape Escape 2 and ICO, both of which will retail at ¥168 yuan.

The official release of PlayStation2 in China comes after months of delay caused by government red tape.

"In response to strong nationwide request for PlayStation2 in China, Sony China is committed to develop a full-fledged PlayStation2 business in the growing market," Sony China chairman Hiroshi Shoda said in a statement released in Beijing. Sony had hoped to launch PlayStation2 in China in the summer.

However, the plans had been delayed by a series of challenges including regulatory hurdles, an overhaul of the government bureaucracy and software piracy, Mr Shoda told said.

PlayStation2 is one of the world's top selling games consoles, competing against Nintendo's GameCube and Microsoft's Xbox.

But none of the three has attempted to launch their products officially in China until this year because of fears of rampant piracy.

Smuggled PlayStation2 consoles are readily available in Beijing for between ¥1,700 and ¥2,000 and games sell at around ¥10 each.

Sony said eight major game developers including Konami, Sega, and Namco are working on Chinese versions of game titles.

10 Yen per game? Is that right? Thats less than $1 USD!

Thats it I'm buying a second xbox and moding the shiznits out of it. 50 Dollars a game suddenly seems like too much.

they probably mean juan, the chinese currency but that's still only 1.5 USD or something.... weird, but i guess the rampant (and rather proffesional) piracy in China can force them down to those prices.

China, communist? ha, it's more capitalist than the bloody U S of A

China, loosening up for a change.
And I dont think it will do too well, with such a rampant ammount of piracy going on.
