High CPU Usage with Winamp 5.31 ?!

I recently bought a new PC and running Windows XP x64 for a few months now.

I used Winamp 2.x for years and was happy with it.

Windows x64 does not support the WMA Codec so i tried Winamp 5.31.

I must say that i hate the fact that Winamp use over 10% cpu usage on my Intel Core 2 Duo E6700.

I installed the software again after removing all old Winamp versions. Same effect. I only installed the plugins i need (WMA, MP3 en MP4 plugin) and the cpu usage is still the same.

I can live with the fact that Winamp now use 16MB of ram instead of 2 with Winamp 2 but not with this high cpu usage.

Some extra info:

The high cpu usage is only this high with MP3's... No trouble with WMA.

Hope someone can help me with this.

System specs:

Intel C2D E6700 2.67 GHz
4 GB of RAM
Soundblaster Audigy 2 Platinum
Windows XP x64 (All updates installed)
Using Winamp 5.31

Is the "Fast Layer 3 EQ" enabled in in_mp3 config > Decoder tab?
If so, try disabling it.

Also, if your files are all vbr, try checkmarking "show average bitrate..."

Other than that, we can't reproduce your problem. Winamp uses between 0-2% cpu for me when just playing mp3 (mainly 0%).

If the problem persists, please read this first.

Re: High CPU Usage with Winamp 5.31 ?!

No it is all default. It uses "Logarithmic EQ (Default)"

All Winamp configs, settings and files are already removed and reinstalled. I only have the in_cdda.dll, in_mp3.dll, in_mp4.dll and in_wm.dll input plugin installed and unchecked almost everything within the setup.

And i'm using the default "out_wave.dll" plugin.

It still use ~10% cpu usage. Winamp 2 works perfectly with MP3's and is at all time around 0% cpu usage.

I only have the problem with MP3's in Winamp 5.

It seems that Winamp 5.24 works perfectly. I will use that one for now.

use out_ds.dll (nullsoft directsound) not out_wave.dll(wave output). out_wave uses a doubleish cpu activity on x64.

out_wave is suited for windows 95/98 and NT4 based machines, nobody else should really use it.

if you still want it to be like winamp2 (with all the winamp5 bug fixes/features) just delete gen_ff.dll (modern skin support plugin).

Don't know since all the files are just where it suppossed to be.

Older versions of hijackthis do not even start ok.

I think it just does not work ok with Windows XP x64

I'm getting the exact same issue, using 7-11% CPU to playback MP3s and showing a noticable slowdown... Not had this since my Pentium w/ MMX days, so downgraded and all is fine again... Possible bug?

If this is what e.g. WinTasks shows:
CPU usage arround 52% (Media Library - winamp.exe, priority normal (8...
What does this figure than represent in terms of my PC (Win XP, Pentium 4 CPU, 3.00 GHz, 512 Mb Ram...)

Well, did you try the suggestions above? With which results?

Please confirm a clean install of Winamp 5.31.

You could also try these DirectSound output tweaks.

If no luck...

Good Winamp plugins by Joonas, DrO and shaneh.

Hi, I tried a clean install &c, and the usage was still high. For now, 5.21 works perfectly with no noticable CPU usage... As I'm not convinced I need the new features offered by 5.31, I'll stay on this version until this regressive behaviour has been fixed :-)

It won't be fixed unless we can reproduce it first.

Can you please upload a sample file which causes this behaviour to sendspace.com and post a link here?

Also attach a List of Plugins via my_plugins_list.txt

Tried as requested, but still got near 100% CPU usage.
Attached pls find the Winamp & System scan files, so somebody could perhaps find the answer to my problems - on my both two PCs.

Thanks in adwance.

Hi,

My problems are very similar to that of mattyday, but CPU usage is beyond every logic...
I use Winamp 5.31 and have some 24.000 files in ML, mostly mp3.

Although we actually wanted to see a List of Plugins via my_plugins_list.txt, as requested (which will show us more info, including confirmation of whether you've got all the latest versions of the default 1st-party plugins)... I can see from your winamp_modules.txt that you're using a few 3rd-party plugins.

Try disabling the following 3rd-party plugins (listed in order of suspicion):

gen_context.dll
out_gapless.dll
in_APE.dll
gen_dl.dll
in_mpc.dll

If the problem persists (unlikely) then we will need a sample file, as requested.

Any MP3 causes this problem. I removed Winamp and installed using a minimal install (no 3rd party plugins, only the most basic ML plugins -- no dashboard etc). It's the same regardless of output plugin (directsound/waveout).

Not keen on sending a list of running processes. Suffice to say that the problem is not reproducable with Winamp 5.24, so not sure it's another process.

Cheers,
Matt

Well, it could be any of these 3rd-party plugins to blame...

<< General Purpose plugins >>

Lyrics Plugin [gen_lyrics.dll]
Play Tracking Replacement v0.4 [gen_pcfix.dll]
Playlist AutoSave V1.0 [gen_plsave.dll]
pubradio.co.uk Playlist Duplicate Remover v1.1 [gen_ppdr.dll]

<< Media Library plugins >>

Playlist Count Set v0.2 [ml_plcount.dll]
ml_plfix pre-alpha [ml_plfix.dll]
MLFind v0.2 [ml_plsfind.dll]

And of course, never count out the possibility of it being Predixis MusicMagic:
ml_xpdxs v1.0.4 [ml_xpdxs.dll]

High CPU Usage with Winamp 5.08 & 5.31

Hi gijs370,

I'm having the same problem with you but I was using Winamp 5.08 for a long time without problems, then from a month a go my CPU usage was showing winamp about 50% when playing music. But I'm in doubt now that the problem is with Winamp only as when talking via Skype the same high usage occured always after 1 minute of usage. I think might be something related to Windows/sound card. I then upgrade to W5.31 and still same problem.

My specs:
SB Audigy 2 ZS PCMCIA
Vaio laptop K45 P4 3.2Ghz 1GB RAM
Win XP Home SP2

Weird facts:
When I play using windows media I got no problem.
When I removed the sound card and played winamp using the onboard sound card I got high cpu usage so it's not a problem isolated with the sound card.

Any ideas folks? Thanks,

Peter.

Not unless you attach your HijackThis log, my_plugin_list.txt, and maybe dxdiag log too.

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....d=161361#specs
http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....161361#plugins

Without that info we can only speculate...

Nobody on the dev or beta teams can reproduce this problem.

A hijack this log will reveal a lot of personal info -- such as what company I work for and so on... unless I start removing/editing things... then the validity of such a log falls in to question...

Edit out any personal info then. We just need to see a list of startup items, running processes, and the header info (windows os, sp, ie). Like I said, we can't really help without seeing those (3) logs.

I don't know for the others, but the overextensive CPU usage disapperaed after Dashbord has been removed (both PCs!).
After having followed the advice of DJ Egg it was 2-7%, now 0-1%.
Afterward i have upgraded to 5.32 and CPU usage remains as it was.
The Dashboard causes by me (both PCs) some uncontroled behavior - I couldn't disable the 'jump to now playing' button and i couldn't uninstall it from within winamp. Winamp has frosed.
Maybe this info will be useful to experts.

Hmm... 11% is probably a bit high if you're not running avs vis plugin at the time.

Which Media Library view is open at the time? Any?

Does it still happen if you remove ALL non-default (1st-party) plugins?

I've also got these installed, and don't have any problems:

Find File On Disk v1.41 [gen_find_on_disk.dll]
Lite'n Winamp Preferences v1.1 [gen_nopro.dll]
One for Nunz v2.75 [gen_nunzio.dll]
Playlist Undo v0.5.3 [gen_undo.dll]
Skins In Submenu v1.7 [gen_skinsubmenu.dll]
ML Lite-n v1.0 [ml_lite_n.dll]

But I don't have any of these installed:

Dynamic Library v2.0 Beta [gen_dl.dll]
Playlist File Remover v2.1 [gen_play_remove.dll]
Time Restore & AutoPlay v2.0 beta 4 [gen_timerestore.dll]

And the only default plugins you've got which I haven't are:
Nullsoft iPod Plug-in v0.54 [pmp_ipod.dll]
Nullsoft PlaysForSure Plug-in v0.53 [pmp_p4s.dll]
mainly because I don't have one of those types of portables, so no need for the plugins.

Other than that, I really aren't sure, sorry.

I don't see any problems in your hjt & dxdiag logs, other than maybe disabling Microsoft Machine Debug Manager service (mdm.exe), and maybe adding the Winamp folder to Panda AV's exclusion list. Though I'd never count out the possibilty of it being something to do with your Soundmax onboard sound chip...

Fixed!

I know it's weird but I figured out my problem.
I added a big book under my laptop so I could work on it better and it was blocking the fan and causing all those high CPU usages and I was blaming winamp or my anti virus or my sound card. Never block your fan!!! haha.

Thanks and good luck.

Hello, I'm new here, but I was searching for help about this issue. Back with Winamp 5.24 I did not have this problem, but when I upgraded to 5.32 and did a clean install of winamp I am getting high cpu usage.

With only a couple songs or less than a hundred, winamp is only less than 2% or so. When I load 20k songs into the playlist I get bogged down, and winamp is using an extreme ammount cpu usage(33-66%). I did not have this problem with older versions of winamp. I can't figure out why it is happening. Like I said , I have done different installs and not sure if anyone else is having this issue? After I clear the playlist with my 20K songs the cpu usage instantly drops. Maybe it's the number of songs in the playlist but this wasn't doing this before.

I've read the suggestions above and they don't seem to help my issue. Anyways hope this gets ironed out because I don't want to get stuck using 5.24.

Edit- I'm using 3000Venice AMD 64bit and 2Gigs of RAM.

Thanks, Wyatt

Without that info we can only speculate...

Nobody on the dev or beta teams can reproduce this problem.

I had the same problem. Even without playing anything, it was using 60 to 70% of my CPU. Not only that: it was doing disk read and write for 500 to 2000 kB/s. Whatever it was doing, it was on my expense. I removed the plugins: ten by ten (there was so many of them). Then at one point, the insanity stopped. I am sorry to tell I did not identify the bad plugin. Then I Completely uninstalled winamp, then reinstalled, to have back all the standard not faulted plugins. And now I am back to normal, CPU less then 1%.

hei, i have the exactly same problem, my winamp 5.531 use 30 - 40 % of my cpu. and thats why i signing up this board

oke this problem seems resolve with clean uninstall of winamp and all plugin, work great for me

before that i tried to examine when winamp run with procmonxp, and i found that when winamp run, it create a thread "in_mp3.dll!DeleteAudioDecoder+0x2c35" i dont know why, but this thread consume 30% of CPU, so i guess some plugin setting crash with in_mp3.dll plugin

i hope someone could understand with this problem, i need some explanation

regards,

Spectrum analyzer bug

Seems the high cpu usage is caused by some bug in the spectrum analyzer. Switch it off and cpu usage is back where it used to be I had the problem in version 5.56.

I uninstalled one plugin after another but nothing changed. Disabling the spectrum analyzer made all the difference for me. The Oscillocope was ok but I set it on No visualization.

The option can be found Ã_n Options - Classic Skins - Classic visualzation ( I disabled Modern skin support after I read somewhere it might cause the high cpu usage )

I had the problem only on my old laptop which runs on an older single core Intel CPU (Mobile Intel Pentium M 710, 1400 MHz / 2Gig RAM / 200 GB HD).

On my other dual core cpu laptop I never really noticed the problem ... propably because the system is a lot more powerful. The old laptop just never had any problem with the older versions of winamp ... so I thought I go look where the problem might sit ...

Hope that helps some other people with the same problem

Hi everybody, I have the same problem but it seems to happen with certain filenames who are long or have things like , . I hope that the problem will ever be solved because its a little bit anoying if i remove all plugins and the problem still exists.

!00 % cpu?

I found that if I open Winamp with the radio stations page open the CPU goes to 100% after a short while. This was caused by a Run.Dll for wininet opening. The answer was to open Winamp as a local service IE no radio or video services at the same time. CPU use was down to 3%. You cannot do this without restarting your PC,

1: open winamp
2: Ensure the Media library is not showing online services (such as radio)
3: If online serices are displayed in the media library change the view
4: Close Winamp
5: Restart your PC
6: Launch winamp
7: Check CPU.

If none of the above work then you can try downloading PROCESS EXPLORER. It is freeware and will show you what the process is that is using the CPU. Come back to us if the problem persists
