multiple instances of USB sound card

I've searched the board and can't find a similar situation.

I've just downloaded the latest WinAmp and set it to use multiple instances. I have 4 identical USB sound cards that I want to drive. When I try to choose the sound card in the output section, I see all four but no matter which one I select the output is always to the same card. The names are all identical in the list.

However, If I go into the control panel and set the default sound card, I can make (the first instance of) WinAmp play on any sound card. The control panel shows the names as "USB Sound Card", "USB Sound Card (2)", ... I can also look into the details for each sound card and the have a unique Instance ID.

How can I get WinAmp to distinguish these sound cards?

OK, I just discovered that If I choose WAV output rather than Direct Output, the sound card names are different and I can direct the output to the different sound cards.

I hope this helps someone else.
