DVD Playback

I know about the inmplayer plugin for winamp and the powerplayer plugin, but is there a plugin dedicated solely to dvd playback for winamp? Is this functionality planned for a future winamp version? This is the only media file I cant play in winamp, and am hoping to add it somehow. Any help is greatly appreciated

what is wrong with the ones you mentioned?

Aside from the fact that they both lockup winamp and dont provide proper playback?

Yes. It's planned for a future 5.1x Pro release, but not for 5.1 itself (still needs some legal work with acquiring decoder licenses etc).

[Edit]

@Logy
It's pointless guessing because we just don't know yet, heh.

What about just letting us utilize an existing decoder (if one is installed, such as the powerdvd and windvd decoder modules)? Would that be feasable (sp)? Also, is there a slated release date for a dvd capable version of 5.1? or the 5.1 series in general? Thanks man!

when its ready...i believe is the official answer. so no.

as for using current decoders, im not sure if its totally legal...im thinking of how real alternative and QA arent exacltly kosher.

billyvnilly: microsoft licenses out the codec usage from each of these companies. Why couldnt winamp do the same for a dvd pro version? I'd gladly pay to support a pro version if I could get dvd playback using my current decoder. Winamp could even be made into two differently priced pro versions, a Pro version that includes its own dvd playback functionality without requiring external decoders and filters, and one that uses a 3rd parties filters. I wouldnt think much would need to be paid in regards to royalties because the user has already paid for the dvd player software, and as such is entitled to use it to its capabilities, hence, the use of these coders by legally licensed user of both winamp and a dvd player software shouldnt have very many legal reprecussions. Just my two cents

DJEgg: I know the reply will probably be "when its ready" but do you have an estimated time of when 5.1 will be available to the general public? I dont need an exact date, just an estimation like "next month, 3 months from now, 10 years from now, etc". Thanks man

when it's ready is as best as we know since you can never really put a date on a release since bugs, etc come up that need to be resolved. so no one can really say (how often have you seen release dates of other software slip and so it makes sense to not give a date )

Do you have an estimated time frame? Dont need an exact time frame, but just a time to begin looking for the 5.2 release I am very anxiously awaiting dvd playback support in winamp pro as this will make winamp my primary player for ALL DIGITAL MEDIA and will work beautifully in my media center pc (being that I have a customized control and interface plugin that i've written for use specifically on a media center pc and winamp). I realize that you cant give an exact date, but even a planned time frame (say, 2 months, 2 years, etc) would be more than helpful! As always, Thanks for your help and your professionalism

I realize that it will be ready when its ready, that was the answer I was trying to avoid receiving. I am not a user who will hold you to a date you say, I dont want a specific date (like it will be released on sept 23, 2008), i more want a projected timeline of when I can expect to see news of an upcoming 5.2 release (like, 2 months, 4 months, 4 years, etc)

we don't know and neither really do the devs. when it's ready is the best answer that you will get since that's the only answer that can be given

Just doing a monthly check on this to see if you have any new information about this. As I said, this is the ONLY possible feature I could see winamp needing. Any input is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

initial plugin has been coded, licensing issues, restricted development resources are focused on other areas. so basically there's no need to keep asking since it will arrive when it does and asking won't get things moving any faster alas

i believe its on the list, but as of yet no license has been aquired. The dev teams current priority is fixing the video support that winamp has at the moment to be mo'bettah, which hopefully you'll see in 5.12. This work should pave the way to adding more supported formats like protected wmv (think highdef wmv films like T3 or whatever it was), and if we're really really lucky, h.264 for mp4 video (like quicktime started supporting recently).

Just a case of a large list and obviously too little time.

Try the quicktime alternative package and then add an entry to the directshow input plugin for MOV and QT files, works wonderfully on my pc
