My ranking is:
1. winamp 2. aduomate 3. ultramixer 4. e-mix In winamp I am missing the preview function from the media library. Constant dripping wears away the stone. Steter Tropfen höhlt den Stein. Winamp, Audomate 3.4(135), Ultramixer or E-Mix |

Foobar2k ftw. On *nix systems, nothing can beat mplayer in terms of versatility.

LeBron is pretty damn good, but I can't go past my all-time favourite player, Charles Barkley.

VLC will play damn near anything I throw at it, with a nicer interface than mplayer.
mplayer will play the stuff VLC doesn't, but the interface can be kind of clunky. For audio only on Linux, nothing beats Amarok. Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway. |

I really haven't liked the direction the latest versions of Amarok have taken. I've been using rhythmbox.

I'm partial to Audacious with the LADSPA plugins for Linux, otherwise like k_rock said, VLC seems to play most other things I need.

![]() What does it bring to the table that makes it better, or what does it not do that pissed you off about the newer versions of amarok? Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway. |

mpd, using mpc (the command-line frontend to mpd, not media player classic), and mplayer for video.
I tried amarok once, and it liked to make other programs hang while it was buffering... it didn't last long. |

No problems as far as function goes. It's still loaded on my Ubuntu box, I just usually use rhythmbox though. Quote:

I never used Gentoo, Ubuntu usually, sometimes Fedora. I guess if you guys are using it, I should take a look at it.
Ubuntu takes care of the libs pretty effectively too. It's just not plug n' play like videolan. I usually have all the codecs and stuff that I need loaded anyway, but if they'res a gap, videolan usually just does the job. My linux rule is basically to use what isn't broken at the time I install it. Since all distros go through periods of being broken, it does lead to a variety of choices and no particular loyalty. If I load it up and it works... fine... if not ... next... Last time Ubuntu was giving me fits with the X server so it ended up being Centos. |

I love Gentoo, but it's really starting to piss me off. There are too many broken ebuilds and things that only half work. Lot's of things are marked stable that aren't. etc. etc.
I'm starting to look into switching, especially since I partitioned my drive well enough to switch operating systems easily. I may bite the bullet and use Ubuntu, soon. I have better sysadmin projects to work on than just getting my main desktop system work. Sorry, getting off topic here. some players come out with their own file format plugins and codecs and some use external ones... each setup has its own pros and cons, but that doesn't make a player the best one.
some like their players minimal and to the point and some prefer eye candy and flashy features that are bloated and full of shit (me included, i admit), the list of any category of those players have a handful of good players and bad players, the "best" one is usually the most common one people use, you read online that people mention player X more than player Y you assume its the best one out there, but its really best for the person who mentioned it... do i have a point here? you decide |
