winamp 5.33 crash on missnamed audio file

I noticed that winamp 5.32 and 5.33 have the same issue. If the file is named say start.wav but actually the file content is mp3 encoded file:
Size: 1438840 bytes
Header found at: 177 bytes
Length: 90 seconds
MPEG-1 layer 3
128kbit, approx. 3746 frames
48000Hz Joint Stereo
CRCs: No, Copyrighted: No
Original: No, Emphasis: None
winamp upon start stops responding totally and just hangs,
instead of showing a message that it can't play the file or it is missnamed.
I have the most latest vga forceware v93.71
Windows XP Pro SP2 with latest updates.
DirectX 9.0c with recent updates.
audio card nforce integrated with latest drivers v6.86.

I can't get it to crash or hang, but it's a known issue that current in_wave can't handle mp3-layered (riff) wav's (just skips over them here).

See link to sticky thread for known workarounds.
