no sign of v2.00 installation

4 gig 1g nano
windows 2000

start with a clean os install
clean install of 5.30
installed mlipod v2.00

ipod shows up in the "eject hardware" dialog as "usb mass storage device" instead of "apple ipod." maybe this is the problem? but itunes can read it just fine and will sync with it anyway.

i have reformatted the ipod several times, and even trashed the drivers in between. winamp still can't see it. i've also tried the ol' "install itunes and send one song to it" trick. disk use is enabled.

most surprisingly, there is no sign of ml_ipod in the winamp preferences. it doesn't show up under portables or devices or media library. the "portables" part of the plugins section lists creative and usb device support, but no ipod. no "ipod support" section elsewhere either as i've seen in the tutorials, so i can't use the "format ipod" option in the ml_ipod controls.

ml_pmp/pmp_ipod does show up there after a clean winamp install, but i want smart playlists.

later upgraded the 5.30 to a 5.32 and then reinstalled ml_ipod again after that. still no sign of either the pod or the ml_ipod prefs.

any ideas? i'm at a loss.

You installed ml_ipod into the right directory? (Maybe you have more than one Winamp installation?)
Is there the ml_ipod.dll in the plugins folder?

just did another clean install of 5.32 and v2.00, still not showing up in the preferences. "ipod support" DOES show up in the prefs if i downgrade to 1.30, but goes away again one i update that to 2.00.

I just installed it on 5.32 without any problems. 2.00 worked fine, and the latest patch 2.00p15 worked, too.

here's another guy having the same problem:

http://forums.winamp.com/showthread....0&pagenumber=2

i tried 2.00p15 too, and that didn't fix the problem. the 1.0 series seems to work, did something change between that and 2.00?

Well, only the album art libraries were added. That's all. I have no clue what's wrong for you. It definitely works fine here. What OS are you running? Win XP, or older? Could you make a recursive listing of your Winamp installation tree and attach that? (Use "dir /s" in a DOS box)

I guess I know now what your problem is: Missing comctl32 from Microsoft. You can download it here
This is necessary since ml_ipod 1.43. It's included with latest InternetExplorer etc.

When I try to run that, it says "Your computer already has the latest version of Windows common controls." I'm using Windows 2000 SP4.

I also updated to IE6 and ran the ml_ipod 2.0 installer again and it's still not there.

Please download the newest patch, 2.00p16, and install it. Then start the file \Program files\Winamp\plugins\ml_ipod\selftest.exe
What does this show? Maybe that can help me. Should look like this:

I'm having the same problem as Veej. I'm running Windows XP home SP2 with Winamp 5.31.

I don't see an .exe file named "selftest" in the mlipod directory. Is there another location to download from that has this file?

*EDIT* found it in your sig...

Yes - Use iTunes to put a song on the iPod, then it should work.
I did that and now it shows up again in winamp.

Installed 2.00, installed 2.00p16 over that. Still no sign of it in the media library or preferences, running the self test gives me:

error

Open a Command Prompt window. (Start->Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt)

If your Winamp is installed in C:\Program Files\Winamp, type this in the command prompt window:

C:
cd "\Program Files\Winamp"
dir /S > dir.txt

(After each line, hit Return key)

That produces a file dir.txt in the Winamp folder. Attach this file here (you can zip it first, if it's too big)

Oh well, that looks pretty good. I'm completely lost - what on earth is the problem???? I tested on a Win2000 machine, all went well.

Three more tests:
1) Please download 2.00p17 and do the selftest again. It should give a little bit more information (a path).

2) Download the getdep.zip from http://mitglied.lycos.de/bursian/ipod/ Extract it into "D:\Program Files\Winamp\plugins\ml_ipod", then double-click on "D:\Program Files\Winamp\plugins\ml_ipod\getdep.bat" Some seconds later, a file dep.txt should be there. Please attach this here.

3) Then, try to copy the three *.dll files from the D:\Program Files\Winamp\plugins\ml_ipod folder to D:\Program Files\Winamp. Now run selftest again, any change? And check in Winamp if it gets loaded now.

It's only testing, I have no real idea what is wrong The error code says that it can't find a module during load. But it works on all the other installations. Something must be special for your installation, but I don't know what it is.

Have you tried using itunes to transfer a file? I honestly had your EXACT same problem, the installation was no where to be found even though it was installed and the ipod wasn't recognized by winamp. But when I used itunes to transfer a song to the ipod, it showed up in winamp again and I haven't had a problem since. It's a funky bug.

Well, if the ml_ipod plugin does not even show up in the preferences, it is some other bug than yours.
Yours is the case when there is no iTunesDB on the device, and it gets created by iTunes on song transfer. But even without showing any iPod in the ML window, the plugin preferences are shown in the prefs window in that case.

Anyway, thanks for stepping in. And of course, it is a good idea to test this. It's only I can't believe it'll help in this case. But who knows...?

1) self test says:

LoadLibrary for ml_ipod failed: code=126 (0x007e)
CWD=C:\

i install my OS to c: and apps to d: ... could that be the problem here? is there a part of the plugin that is hard-coded to assume that winamp is installed to the c drive?

i can't imagine what could be "weird" about my installation, since it is a clean install (and i've tried clean installs several times with various versions of the plugin). i am doing a custom install where i deselect things i don't need (visualizations, etc) but i don't mess with anything that i could imagine impacting ml_ipod

2) here is the output from dep.bat

3) moving the dll files to the winamp directory did not make the plugin show up in the preferences.

4, for extra credit) 2.00 alpha19 did not fix the problem either.

weird... several hours after installing 2.00 a19, it suddenly detected my ipod, without me doing anything (not even unplugging it and reconnecting or anything like that). here i am checking my email, and the config box pops up out of the blue.

i guess we can let this topic die. thanks for your help.

Hm, the dep.txt says that two DLLs could not be found: MSVCP60.DLL and APPHELP.DLL. That is more than strange.

And the selftest expects that the current drectory is the one here the exe is in. It seems that on your system the current directory is something on C:\? Don't know why. You simply double-clicked on the selftest.exe? On every system I've seen so far, this launches the exe with the current directory set correctly. Maybe some setting in the registry, or a "default shortcut", or anything like that that changes this behaviour on your system? I'm puzzled.

Ok, I found out, APPHELP.DLL is only needed on XP.
But MSVCP60.DLL should be present. Is it still marked as missing in the dep.txt, if you run it now? It's this line (line 468):
code:

[ ? ] MSVCP60.DLL Error opening file. The system cannot find the file specified (2).

And does the selftest work now, too?

Hey, I found this: http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?postid=1763887
Interesting, isn't it?

MSVCP60.DLL seems to be a cause of problems for many, as you can see with Google. It is not part of a clean Win2000, but a lot of programs depend on it. It comes with a lot of MS apps, but obviousely it was not installed on your system. So, if it is there now - how did it get there? Did you install anything else the last day?

i know that msvcp60.dll is missing from my system, because i get a "missing dll" error upon winamp startup.

i did a clean 2k install and have not installed many ms apps (just a really sparse ms office and upgraded ie5 to 6). is that what was killing ml_ipod? if so, how do i install it?

hmm. well upon further reflection i realized that i did the ms office install in between my initial winamp installation and the point where ml_ipod mysteriously started working. i no longer get the missing dll error messages at winamp startup, and when i poked around in my system32 folder, msvcp60.dll was already there.

so my tentative theory is that ml_ipod needs msvcp60.dll, which is not included in windows2000, and i didn't have it until the ms office installation.

does that sound plausible?

might be an idea to add a check into the installer for msvcp60.dll and just popup a messagebox/link to indicate where to get the file. the other option would be to statically link to the ml_ipod dll but people would think the dll is possibly bloated (you know what all those crazy users are like )
