Portable player problems

Hey all,
I searched through the forums and found no new postings on this topic so I am starting this thread. I tried posting on an old thread but no one responded. If starting this thread was an error I apologize but can't find an answer to this issue anywhere.

I have a Creative Zen 32 gb player. Up until about 2 weeks ago it worked seamlessly with Winamp. I could play from the player through Winamp as well as add and remove music, Media Library allowed me to search the player, etc... Now it doesn't work. No apparent reason. When I open the media library it shows that the player is "loading", then it lists the playlists I have on the player but I can't play any of them and the search feature shows nothing on the player. This just started a couple weeks ago. I have not changed the firmware on the player or anything, and I have the latest firmware for the player. Any idea what's going on? Any help would be appreciated. I really loved winamp's support for portable players, particularly handy since I spend a lot of time at coffee shops with my laptop and constantly transferring music between my desktop and laptop is a pain. Anyway, any suggestions are welcome. All requisite information is below.

Thanks in advance,
Be well,
DS

i can suggest check the modes to see if its in either mtp or msc other than that cant tell whats wrong without looking into great detail

only other thing i suggest is that if your using it just to store music to use between 2 computers and your not using all 32gb is to just get a regular flash drive (dont know if 32gb is available yet) and use the drive as a watched folder in the library instead (the way i do it since my files take less than 8gb) and use the player when you dont have your laptop with you

thanks rob

Robdog,
I just posted all the requisite info on my system and plugins, will that help?

What do you mean by "check the modes"? Where would I find that?

Be well,
DS

the modes im talking about are how the mp3 player recieve the mp3 files
since there maybe an issue with the creative plugin within winamp itself you may want to see if you can get the player to be viewed on the computer as a flash drive instead of a mp3 player (mtp= media transfer protocol msc=unsure what true meaning is)
sometimes changeing the setting is within the device itself and on others (sansa in paticular) the change is within the device manager on windows
msc mode is the best to work with within winamp since wmp wont compete for ownership over the player

as for why the plugin your using stopped working may have to do with vista or some other reason but i cant begin to explain why without digging into the issue

thanks rob

Robdog,
I checked in the device manager and didn't find any mode option, nor did I find one on the device itself. I should mention that Winamp and the player work fine on my desktop which is running Windows 7. So I'm guessing its a setting issue on the laptop. I'll try a complete uninstall and re-install and see what happens from there.

yeah im lost just as much as you are
so if the uninstall doesn't work we may have to wait for someone who was able to find what happened and tell you what it was
hopefully the uninstall works

thanks rob

I have two Creative Zen Vision M 30GB (my wife and I have one each), and they do not show up in the "portables" section anymore, either. They worked as recently as a month ago. I tried resetting the Zens, and un/re-installing Winamp to no avail. I'm running Win 7. Win 7 recognizes them, and Media Player can see them. I've looked through various properties and controls and find no reason for the problem, either. You are not alone.

Update: I had version Winamp v5.56 in an old download folder and installed that after uninstalling the latest version. I now have restored portable functionality. I had to do the same thing on my laptop that has XP, which also did not work with the latest version. Search for "winamp old version" at the google prompt and there are some sites that have back versions available for download.

@Citizen X: Thanks dude! I had the same problem with my Sansa Clip and rolled back to version 5.56 from oldapps.com by just installing it over the newer version and it immediately solved the problem. I was using Pro, but the 5.56-version I installed was a free version (I suppose), but the Pro licence is still there and everything seems to work just fine. I naturally assumed it was some nasty Windows bug or feature that caused the problem, but it seems to me like it is the Winamp team who hasn't done their home work properly.

since sansa keeps updating their firmware every so often it is hard for the devs of winamp to keep up
i had problems with sansa express until sansa posted on their website how to transfer the player into msc mode
since then i have not had any problems with sansa players
as for devs not having their homework done properly there are more serious parts in winamps code to take care of first (specifically security) then the major plugins come in, portables codes for older players come in last since the market is always changeing on what is available
right now the devs are struggling with the newer generation ipods since apple made the code on the new players almost impossible to break (they're getting there though) so users have to use itunes to transfer files

as for other things being fixed i cant tell you since i dont know them all only the mods and devs do

thanks rob

robdog2004,
Well, my Sansa Clip is just a couple of months old and I actually checked the Sansa home page for firm ware updates, but as far as I could see I was using the latest one. I am sure the problem is to be found within the Winamp 5.572. When coming to think about it the problems with connecting the Sansa must have begun after updating Winamp some time ago. However, I didn't really mean to lash out on the devs of Winamp. I've been using Winamp for almost a decade I suppose and I keep using it because I like it. Mostly because it is possible to opt out from having all the bloat and flashing banners, online services and other, for me personally unwanted and useless stuff, thrown in your face. And because it's light weight, fast and mostly works like a charm. Soo.. Keep up the good work, Winamp team!

and yeah.. it did work to get the Sansa to connect with Winamp 5.572 if switched into msc-mode, but since I had already transfered all of the music on the portable in mtp-mode none of it shows up in Winamp if connected in msc. I suppose there are pros and cons with both modes, but I prefer the seemless integration and detailed functionality of the mtp-mode over the more basic and allround msc.

Have a nice day you all and thanks to the person behind the initial post for bringing up the problem.
