I must admit, the mustang is one hell of a car for the amazingly low price

I remember you saying that you drive a Benz. And now Daimler and Chrysler are together. Bah. Porche/Audi/Volkwagen are pretty good, but I like GM. German machinery is too complex for it's own good, even if it's well engineered. If I were to have a European car, it would be a Lamborghini. No Ferrari's either. I'll stick with good ol' American muscle. That's why I drive a Chevy. And the Mustang (even though it's much better than it used to be) is still over-priced and underpowered compared to the Camaro. Even if Ford has a Mustang that's faster than a Camaro, it still can't beat the Corvette.

So like these car things, hmmmm..are like Chevy's and Fords better than a Yugo? I like just can't imagine anything more advanced than that. Gosh are you saying that like there are cars bigger than that? Why blow me down with a box of baleful banannas, that's just darn shocking! And you say people actually have great massed disputes about which ones are better? Golly Goggles how frightfully peculiar, one would almost assume that it's more group bonding and alientation practises disguised as a perfectly normal relationship with an inanimate object. I must say you are opening up new worlds to my little innocent self.

So, what kind of car do you like, Mule? I'm curious. Hope it's not a Yugo. Ya know, come to think about it, I haven't seen one of those for about ten years. Hmm...

Yeah, I got an M-B (praise the lord for the PB Foundation ), but the point of the matter is that there are even better imports than an M-B (say it ain't so!)

Bottom line, like Mule, I'm in for the aesthetics, and frankly, American cars are one arm short of a Venus

If I wanted power, nothing beats a steam engine

And Yugo's and Trabants aren't that bad when you compare it with the crappy build quality of most American cars. Let's see you drop a steel girder on the front end of a domestic, whack the tranny to the rear wheels, and drive off (Yes, I have actually seen this happen to a Yugo). Gas consumption is pretty uch equivalent, and the comfort level is comparable to a lincoln. So to you

As far as the way a car looks, that's your opinion. As far as quality, some are better than others. Period. Sure, most imports are good quality, but most domestics are too (except Ford ). I've got a Chevy and I can say that it is of exceptional quality. My mom has a Ford and I can say that it is a peice of crap. Chrysler is iffy. Now that they're in cahoots with Daimler, they should improve a bit. Still not as good as GM, though.

Hey, this is a Chevy vs. Ford thread, so no more talk of imports, damnit!

You can thank the United states
Air force for one of the greatest humanitarian efforts ever- they bombed and
destroyed the Yugo factory during last
years little war. I hope they never rebuild it.

I dont like either car company- but if
from either.... it would be ford because I like Aston Martins

That's all that counts

he he he

You wanted me to take the fight outside? BRING IT ON!
I'm only talking about their domestic products; stuff like Opel or Vauxhall don't count; til later, that is

All righty, let's start with Ford

SportTrac is crappy cuz:

Looks like a pick up
Drives like an SUV
Has the cargo capacity of a car

In general, Ford's looked like shit when they were in that bubbly-light, funky-Taurus phase.

GM? Half their products (Buick, Olds, Caddy) are owned by old fogey's. Chevy's are boxy as volvo's and eat as much gas

All their product's are cross-platformed.

American cars generally suffer from huge safety problems (roll-overs, side impact air bags, overpowered air bags without shutoff switch, lack of selt belt pretensioners), QC, and a lack of style and grace.

Last point, you may say is a matter of taste, but why does everyone regard Italian cars as the hottest? The biggest reason that this is so is cuz Americans invented mass-production, andave taken it too far by cross-platforming. Unfortunately, their buying out foreign companies and making turning them into generic, bland American clones and immposing their markteing strategies (Mazda Tribute)

American cars are bland, lack originality, lack technology and are just plain unsafe. Some originality is showing in products such as Evoq and SSR (but the hard-top retractible roof was pioneered in the SLK). Technology is kind of going up, but mainly in the Caddy brand- something most people can't afford.

I was in Europe recently, and saw an enormous difference in the type a cars they had their. Especially Ireland, cuz they got a 12% growth rate, so all their cars are brand new. We rented a Vauxhall (among other cars) and we saw interior trim differecne. ABSOULUTELY MASSIVE! Vauxhall is GM, and the model we saw was loosely based on the Cavalier/Sunfire, but it looked so much better. It distantly resembled a Passat. The interior was fabulous. It was nice, tight, clean and compact. And now cheap vinyl or crappy cloth. The dash was in some kind of a leather substitute, and the cloth seats looked pretty expensive. The speakers were amazing. This was a four cylinder car, but it had the acceleration and power of a V8 and the handling and refinement (it was standard, though) of something that would be 4x more expensive over here. You must remember, were driving at speeds of >90mph (he he he... "I'm sorry sir, but we're just a bunch of tourists; we didn't know, honest!) and it still handled like a charm. Then why the hell doesn't GM sell this over here? Cuz Americans want their goddamned 4 ton gas guzzling V8 that gets 2 miles to the gallon, but hey! it doesn't matter cuz I've got 400(uncontrollable cuz handling's like crap) horses under the hood and you don't!

It's a good thing gas prices are rising cuz I'll be laughing when I'm scooting around in my imaginary diesel VW that gets 1500 miles to a tank while your getting your 500 buddies to help push that 4 ton Excursion to the nearest gas station.

God, man, gas is almost as cheap as a bottle of coke, but people still complain!

Yeah! and take that you big old nasty 4x4 owners See on the Isle-of-Lewis where I distantly came from gas had to be shipped in by ferry so it was even MORE expensive than normal UK prices. Now you're going to see a lot of Diesel tractors up there, but honestly it is places like the UK and Ireland that are driving the car technology industry. They have a need for high economy cars, they also have a discerning driving public who won't put up with crap, after all they are paying a small fortune to drive these things around.

Well I suppose one day the American manufacturors will get out of the oil companies pockets... Until then we'll just keep seing these stupidly designed cars that the public love. -sigh-

Mule.

Pretty funny driving across the N. Ireland border. Southern gas is ~10p cheaper, taking into account exchange rates, yet the gas stations are minutes apart.

I just can't wait till all those yankees have to sell there SUV as scrap metal cuz America ran out of inland gas. Prices would almost double! Who knows, there maybe a few road hogs who're too stubborn to change with the times.

I hate SUV's, they're scarier to pass than 18 wheelers cuz at least truck drivers know what they're doing. It's as if SUV drivers suddenly lose their common sense and any inkling of danger to other people's lives and properties.

btw Hummers and TJ's don't fall into my definition of an SUV, so I still love 'em with a passion

The reason why Italian sports cars are considered to be the hottest is because they have race-car performance. But, they also come with a race-car price tag, too. This makes the cars more elusive to the average buyer, thus more exotic. I guess it doesn't matter that an Italian super-car gets the same gas mileage as a big pickup or SUV, either. I can get a Corvette that does 0-60 in 4.0 seconds, costs a few hundred-thousand dollars less, and still gets over 30 miles to the gallon. And as far as technology advancements go, I've never seen anything like the traction/stability control system of the Corvette on any Ferrari. The Northstar engine and drivetrain of the Cadillacs is the most advanced in any production car in the world. And just because a manufacturer uses and idea from another, doesn't mean they are less advanced or unoriginal. This is what drives them to make advances in the automotive market.

Damn, I went to my local Chevy dealer today in hopes of at least gaining an "Avalanche" brochure, if not the actual thing. They haven't even gotten advanced copies yet
The guy did try to sell me a brand new Vette though(cherry red convertible)
