Your Winamp tips, tricks, skins, plugins...

There are lots of things Winamp can do that some people may not be aware of.
I thought this could be a good place to share those tips and tricks together in one thread. Maybe let us know what plugins you use too and why...
(I did see the other Tips and Tricks thread but that seems to be very technical and mainly on skinning so..)

So here are few from me:

1. Did you know that you don't need to use the main window at all? You can uncheck the Main window and use the buttons down the bottom of the playlist (or even hotkeys.
This gives Winamp a cleaner more modern look imo.
Also when you widen the playlist the visualiser comes into view too...so you don't lose that little animation.

My plugins:
NXS big clock (A big clock)
Playlist file remover (Removes tracks once played)
Leos Lyrics (Lyrics search tool)
Resumer (Resumes playback at startup)
Titlebar info (Puts currently playing song on any windows titlebar to see whats playing!)
Introplay (Play the first x seconds of each song...great to go through albums etc fast)
Explorer context menu (Puts the normal explorer right click context menu into playlist so you can cut and paste or move songs to desktop etc)
4front oss/3d effects processor (Fantastic better sound plugin)
Sqrsoft Advanced Crossfader 1.72(Can't live without this fantastic crossfader)

My skin:
Currently and recolored/recursered version of City Skin 1
See pic..

There...anyone else??

Speaker system and wake up to music

Speakers all round your house:
I have a $100 Logitch 5.1 computer sound system...nothing too special.
But I have added 5 speakers (8ohm) to my existing 5!
They are all around my house and I have some cheap switches to turn them on and off.(1xlounge,1xkitchen, 2xpatio, 1xfront porch) Set up a playlist and way you go...no expensive extra amp needed, just use off the existing built in speaker amp...I even had similar setup with a very cheap/nasty 2 way computer system for years without a problem!
Total outlay for second hand speakers and switches/wiring etc...around 50 bucks....BARGAIN!
The neighbours think I'm mad but hey!

Playlist alarm:
I used to have Winamp setup to start a different playlist each morning to wake me up. All the speakers around the house were used!
I would start with classical on Mondays and by the end of the week it would wake me up to full on techno...lol
(I would just add the individual playlists to a separate scheduled task in Windows Xp)
Try it.
:-)

Cheers, Pete

Did you know that Winamp can record anything like the sound of a website?

Steps:

1) Right-Click > Play > URL... >> Type this: linein://

2) Make sure repeat is OFF!

3) Select the "Nullsoft Disk Writer" as the output plugin.

4) Go to your system sound mixer and select "Stereo Mix" as the recorder.

ClassicPro© v2.01 : This plugin allows you to use cPro skins in Winamp. ClassicPro skins are all SUI skins and loads very quickly. ClassicPro skins is even easier to skin than Winamp Classic skins. A new layout have been added since version 2.

Did you know you can add any web site to the Online Services in the Media Library by editing the 'ml_online.ini' file. Things like http://www.allmusic.com/ for easy access to music info, http://www.di.fm/ for easy access to all the DIGITALLY IMPORTED and SKY.fm stations, you can even add http://forums.winamp.com/ and browse the forums from inside Winamp if you want.

In fact I ended up with so much clutter on the left hand pane I made my own local web page and gathered it all together with many of the non Shoutcast bookmarks I use on a regular basis. My eyes aren't too good nowadays so I've given it big bright buttons, and being local it's a doddle to maintain, right click > View Source and away you go. With a few caveats it's a dream. See attached.

Yep Craig, it sure is awesome. I don't post much anymore, but if I like something (and if I'm interested), I'll do so. Earlier today I offered this "discovery" by UJ as an alternative approach for amp-phibian here.

Good ref there UJ!

Change the display of your playlist.

Go to options>Preferences or Ctrl+P
Then General Preferences>Titles

an Example would be

[%artist% ][ '['%album%']' ][ - %tracknumber% - ]$if2(%title%,$filepart(%filename%))

which would be
Artist [Album] - Track# - Song Title
Putting [] around the tagname will only show if that file has something in it.
So if album doesnt exist it would show
Artist - Track# - Song Title

I see people with the default all the time so i dont think most people know how to do this.

Well that's probably a good thing since most problems exist between the keyboard and the chair. People you post topics in the forums saying that their playlists just say "ERROR IN FORMATTING STRING" after they have been dicking around and forgotton a percent sign, dollar sign, closing bracket.

I am willing to help out the occasional tinker or people who want playcount or album the the string because they may not actually know how to. I will also point them in the direction of the Winamp ATF article with much better documentation than the in-built thing.

By the way:
$IfStrEqual2(%album%,Overclocked ReMix,$iflonger($left(%title%,$sub($len(%title%),9)),41,$cut($left(%title%,$sub($len(%title%),9)),38)...,$pad($left(%title%,$sub($len(%title%),9)),41)),$if(%title%,$iflonger(%title%,41,$cut(%title%,38)...,$pad(%title%,41)),$filepart(%filename%)))[ - $iflonger(%artist%,25,$cut(%artist%,22)...,$pad(%artist%,25))]$IfStrEqual2(%album%,http://www.ocremix.org, - Overclocked ReMix[ '['%year%']'],[ - $iflonger(%album%,35,$cut(%album%,32)...,%album%)][ '['%year%']'])[ - Track: %tracknumber%][ - Played: $lpad(%playcount%,3)][ - Rated: $lpad(%ratingstar%,5)]

Some of the highlights:
  • It will remove the "OC ReMix" bit from the end of tracks from Overclocked ReMix.
  • It will trim the title to 41 characters and add "..." is the title gets cut.
  • It left pads the playcount and rating to 3 and 5 respectively.
