planet x

Hey dudes,

So much milk drop action going on around here it makes my head spin So....

This latest preset took a little work, more than any other preset I'd say. And yet when I look at it now, it seems quite simple... though I think it works, and I think I'm happy with it.

Firstly, it's a "mellow" preset, it does NOT react in any way to music- I experimented with making it react in all sorts of ways, but I didn't like it, and it seemed to retract from the simplistic beauty of the preset.

Secondly, it implements a new technology- FUDLE(tm) technology And it is this technology that took a bit of work and a bit of tweaking to overcome the limitations of (a) milkdrop and (b) me This new technology, dubbed FUDLE, is "fiShbRaiNs ultra dodgy lighting engine". It uses approximations and shortcuts which seem to work (visually that is).

The planet ring rotates on two axes in order to add visual interest, and to highlight FUDLEs volumetric shadows (sometimes that can be slightly disorienting). The shadow across the planet ring utilises a Volumetric Approximation Geometrically Implemented Noise Algorithm (unfortunately this acronym spells the word "VAGINA"... I need to have a talk to my marketing people about that...)

Anyway, I hope you guys like it.

Please watch the preset for a good minute or two in order to appreciate the FUDLE.

Here's another remix of it.

Fishbrain, I optimized your wave form code.

nx = x*sin(theta) + y*cos(theta);
ny = x*cos(theta) - y*sin(theta);

can be greatly optimized to

st = sin(theta) ; ct = cos(theta);
nx = x*st + y*ct;
ny = x*ct - y*st;

this cuts the number of sin and cos functions for rotation in half, both of which are pretty expensive. Also you had a couple places of something like

a = b*cos(0) + c*sin(0);

which is easily optimized to constants

a = b*1 + c*0
or
a=b

This got the framerate on my radeon from 45 to 70.
I also increased the number of stars on screen by making the sphere a lot smaller and swapping those which fall behind the camera plan to being in front of.

Looks great! And it doesn't need any reaction to music indeed (in my opinion)
milkdrop is always the best choice for testing new stuff, i agree.

Cheers,

Nice work E.Os

I hadn't bothered with any optimizations- my brain is rusty on 3D and my programming philosophy has always been to make the code readable, hence things like "sin(0)"... it helps me understand the process...

But VERY nice idea with the star field!

I was lazy, thinking the framerate was fast enough, but it looks like you optimized it quite significantly... nice one!

That is the bset milkdrop preset I have ever seen. Beats most AVS presets I've seen as well.
