Winamp Enthusiasts Website Up

Just a note that our Winamp Enthusiasts website is now being used to show a sneak peek of our Facebook Group page for people who are reluctant to use Facebook, rather than just a redirect straight to the Facebook Page, as it was before.

It will give you a glimpse of what the Group Page looks like what we are about and we'd hope that it may just convince you to take the plunge.

It's another way to read about Winamp and has a huge amount of resources, links, downloads etc. Some rare hard to find info all in one place.

It's all promotion for Winamp so can't hurt.

Please check it out..

Cheers, Pete

It's a good discussion actually as to what the real difference is between commenting/chatting on Facebook or on a forum like this.
About 17 yrs ago I hated computers and said they were a waste of time. Today I run a small hosting company and am on the computer 8 hrs a day.

Hi djpete1959,

I don't like the terms of service related to what Facebook and others like it may legally do with the info that's posted. I know that doesn't mean much in the 'real' world, but it does give people a recourse when info is used improperly, if they choose to pursue it.

In addition, it encourages and facilitates some people to divulge far more than they should and leads others to expect far more personal info than they have a 'right' to, imho. Current and future employment may depend on what's posted. Employers and government agencies 'mine' Facebook and other popular social media, but they generally ignore forums like this unless given a reason (from popular social media) not to. Of course it is up to the individual to restrict themselves, but some don't seem to be able too. Sometimes this is not entirely the individual's fault, I've heard about the psychological 'tricks' and 'experiments' some of these 'services' use to acquire marketable content.

Anyway, I try not to post or PM anything anywhere, that I really want to remain private or limited to those I trust.

Somewhat like you, I used computers at work (29 years ago) and didn't see a need for home use. Then I realized the easy access to educational and recreational resources having a home computer (especially with internet/web access) provides (and it cuts down on overtime at the office). It also allows those so inclined to make a little or a lot of money.

Yeah I hear you, it's a bit of a big bother world. I don't like the ads but with an ad blocker it's all good, I suppose you weigh up the pros and cons and make an individual decision.

It's more than a bit of a big brother world in the USA. The fictional city of Chicago in the game "Watch Dogs" is not very far from the current reality. There are cameras everywhere, monitoring everything. There are more and more bright and colorful digital billboards going up that change their political and commercial messaging on a daily basis or faster.

One of the candidates for state governor this year is an owner of the biggest company putting these billboards up. He says he will not draw a salary or accept a pension if he wins. He says he just wants to 'help' the people of the state live better lives. The latest 'polls' have him tied with the current governor.

We are being herded and controlled in the name of 'security', efficiency and a 'better life'. Since too many want to look at things through 'rose colored glasses' or refuse to consider the possible downside of things, there will be no turning back. Most are caught up in their individual pursuits and believe anything 'bad' or restrictive will happen to someone else who 'deserves' it.

Yeah, the world of "1984" is becoming real, just delayed a few decades. I tend to worry a bit about my children's, and their children's, future. Sure there are social and economic problems, but I don't think 'big brother' is the best way to solve them. Anyway, what do I know, time will tell.

I have to agree with Aminifu here. As much as I cherish the Winamp community (even if I no longer use the player), Winamp will not be the 'final straw' that causes me to create a facebook account.

Never underestimate the bandwidth of a station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway.

I'm not pro-facebook, but it's not like by creating an account you are obliged to 1-Give away strictly personal and factual information about you 2-Upload photos and stuff which may compromise your security and "freedom". And so..
I personally have 2 accounts, one for personal use and to get in contact with who I really want (is pretty close actually), and a 2nd one, sort of a "professional account", more formal and opened which I also use like a feed of news and stuff I like (i.e. there are a lot of cool things bands offer through FB and such).

That being said, is well known how FB privacy policy is s***t, a malicious enterprise always spreading a bad and distorted image of how we are as human beings and etc etc...

Two things I don't get:

1. (my personal view): It's not just about a few ads coming with FB, which could be blocked. Read along europe-v-facebook.org. That's my concern about FB.

2. Why don't you make Winamp Enthusiasts Group readable for non-FB-members? At the moment it looks like a quite exclusive circle - or don't you want to spread the word?

Not the conspiracy theory again.
The group IS readable to anyone. It's not a closed group.
But sounds like you will never understand how it works if you don't give it a go.
Never mind, no stress.

This may help explain though.
Our group is a public group.
There's no catches.

You mean public to those who are facebook members, right?

How can I access the site without being a member?

If I can't, it may be called a public group in facebook world, but it's not public in the way this site is.

correct, just like all the other social media companies work like Twitter etc etc.
The fact is that almost everywhere you go on the web you are being watched/tracked, even this forum, Googlebots etc.

the privacy/notification settings on Facebook are a lot simpler than they used to be and easy to set.

I don't know if it's region related, but I can directly access some FB sites without being a member. That's what I observe and what I was asking for, because actually I think having a WA Enthusists Group is a cool thing. It's too bad that contributing depends on making concessions to FB - which one or the other is not willing to do.

And one short comment on the Europe-vs-Facebook thing: Obviously you didn't look at it at all. It has nothing to do with conspiracy, it's all about European law and its compliance.

Hi Zackbuffo, sorry if I was rude. I did look at your link and agree with a lot of it, but I also accept that if I join FB that I do give away some of my personal info. I tighten up privacy/notification settings and that's the best I can do if I want to use the service.

I hear what you say and can understand your concern, but for me it's a compromise to get the free service.

TINSTAAFL! It's interesting what we're willing to compromise to avoid spending money. We all do it, just draw the line at different places.
