Do they have enough interest? The main point is, some people think open sourcing things is the magical solution, but larger open source projects need sponsors as well.

Agreed, without support things might get done but development will slow to a crawl and the project might end up being done as a hobby on the weekends.

I hope, the picture in post #1527 does NOT mean a grave for my most loved favourite Winamp...

It seems, I should post my "MUSICFOREVER STUFF" also here, because my inspiration always was "▶ Music will not die - Music forever!!!" since November 2013... I have to upload my "logo"-files in a .zip-folder on Mediafire, and then I have to edit my Devious Journal...

Does Winamp work on Windows 10? I miss the visualizations. Development is non existent at this point. Still on version 5.666 which is the version I downloaded here in Dec 2013.

For me .. the best ever made player - i want a reason of shut down .. -its future?

Goodmorning from Greece !,

I think its the best audio player ever ..

one of the pros that i can't change it , is the radio stations search !

eg i dont know what music to play , and search for sth and it finds it!!!

(much before .. some new services in the internet...)

why this chaos in the site ?

just a shut down ??

Could we AGAIN have UPDATES of our favorite player ,
having the SAME pros of the past , .. and if you add or improve sth (eg quality) of course .. is accepted!!

or AM TOO optimistic ?

please what do you think ?

thanx a lot

optimistic

I'm the optimistic one, I keep hoping some one will create a iTunes replacement that looks like it was created by someone that remembers the human interface design guidelines that made Mac software easier and consistent. iTunes is a top heavy non intuitive monster that the first dev team that gets it right will have the new Next best thing.

Although in our private life Frank and I are tending more and more to be pessimistic (we have to worry about our existence and our future), at least for Winamp & Milkdrop I want to be more optimistic, and I am still doing that. I never want to give up my hope, that Winamp will become popular again.

Also I am still busy with the additional random textures and wallpapers, and my idea for them had been born in November 2014. At least my own works should be available for the Winamp Community, especially my artwork, photoworks and photos of Nature & Landscapes without humans.

The Creative Commons Artists have my permission to use my own images for their live-events and their music-videos (also the Winamp-Milkdrop-Videos). The musicians, DJs and netlabels can be found in the featured music-channels, if You visit my own YouTube-Channel. And You can use my images in Your Winamps, additional random textures, desktop wallpapers, Komodo backgrounds...

You can only control what you can control (which is not very much). Plan as best you can for the future, but try not to worry so much about it. Enjoy today and the next days as they come. I consider myself to be a realist, not very optimistic or pessimistic. The up-side, I seldom get very disappointed. The down-side, I'm seldom really surprised by anything.

Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Winning makes you happy and losing makes you sad, but it also teaches you stuff.

Try not to get very excited when you win and try not to get depressed when you lose.

That is easier said than done, it takes a lot of life experience.

I see according to a comment on Twitter DJ Egg is working to get a 5.8 Public beta out.

I think this is what Winamp needs. I have no problem waiting for a new version as I'd rather we got the best product possible but a beta showing everyone what's happening will at least put people at ease

Winamp is still the best music player, but let's face it, it had not had a significant update for a long time before it was officially shelved so nothing has changed. Works fine, ain't broke, don't fix it.

Thank You, Aminifu...

I am trying to remember Your words, and I am trying to do the best. In the last days I have to cry very often, also now, while I am sitting at one of the computers in the meeting-point. Some minutes ago I had taken a consultation. Now I am talking a little bit with the other Techno Fan, while we have good Techno running on YouTube. It is very difficult not to think too much about our private problems and to calm down inside of me, if the private problems are still around us.

In the evening I want to take again the Beyerdynamic DT-990 Pro headphones and start Winamp on my notebook (we never have disturbed the neighbors with music or something else like a hoover, hammer or drilling-machine, but they want to expell us now). I love Ambient Dub and Dub Techno very much, the songs come randomly, and they can come more than once. Also the Milkdrop Visualizer helps me very much, the random changes between trippy and slow presets, also photo-friendly presets together with 4020 images in the textures folder, which give me a feeling of peace and silence, because mostly they show the peaceful world.

BTW, I have uploaded some more .zip-folders on Mediafire. My ideas with Winamp and Milkdrop are so good, so that they should not simply become dusty between the many books (sie sollen nicht einfach nur unbenutzt in den Bücherreaglen verstauben = they should not just unused gathering dust on the bookshelves)...

Distressed that nothing seems to be happening

I stumbled across winamp about a year ago, and love it! Just the fact that it will play from storage other than CDs puts it miles in front of any other player software I've seen. I was glad to read (then) that a new version was in active development, and I waited eagerly to pay for a copy of the result.

Today I'm still waiting with money metaphorically in hand, but there's been no result, no progress reports, and apparently (I've not read this whole thread so I might be maligning the product manager unfairly, for which I apologise if so) precious little news of any kind.

I too would be in favor of the source being opened. The user interface could be improved, for one thing (human-factors is my field, so I can say things like that).

One way that might appeal to the current owners, if they're not especially interested in doing the work themselves, would be to release it to a committed dev team on a royalty basis.

If the dev team were composed of professionals, it would have a product manager, and an architect/dev manager who, between them, could keep the development and release process from getting too crazy!

The product manager would do the competitive analysis, wishlist collection, and pricing, and the architect/dev manager in consultation with the stakeholders would decide features, schedules, and release dates. Much of the QA could be done by the community.

It might take six months to actually get the dev phase started, but it would move fast after that since the work would not be being done from scratch.

The user interface can be changed by using things called 'skins'. There are hundreds of them. Take a look at this one (http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php?t=388090). Post any questions on it's installation and/or use in that thread.

The new owners paid millions and are looking for ways to profit second hand off of an app that is given away for nothing. Until ways are found to make further Winamp development pay for itself and Winamp related income streams are in-place, a new version will not be released.

In the meantime, continue to enjoy what you have (or move on to something else).

In the 1st post in this thread (back on page 1) there are links to the 4 most recent official posts on "Updated info about the next Winamp release ...".

Doing silent reader every month to see anything new on Winamp development. Using Winamp for years, and now I've been using MediaMonkey for a while because I need to build Music library. Hahaha...

... and oh... this forum give me an announcement:

Not always. The skin can only reflect the internal organisation.

What's the alternative? Bitch and moan?

When given a choice, I rather spend my time doing what I enjoy.

As for desktop computer digital media players, Winamp (with help from plug-ins) satisfies most of my needs better than any other app I've tried, and I've tried a lot of them. A few do 1 or 2 things better, but overall nothing beats Winamp, imo.

Seriously Radionomy should fix up Winamp or release it to the public as an open-source project. It's still the best music library manager; it doesn't need to look like current "radio" apps, it can still be a music manager and attach streaming and purchasing etc. Too many apps nowadays are focused on giant pictures and throwing artists and genres into your face that you don't care about, rather than staying a good music file manager and player for your collection.
