AMR Format

Sorry if this has been talked about before but I can't get anything using search (maybe it's just me beeing newbie) but is there anyway to use Winamp to listen to files in AMR format?

I have a nokia mobile phone and I usualy get some amr files from my friends to use as ringtone but I don't want to send the files to my mobile phone everytime I want to ear them

Are there any plugins that do this? or something like the Real Alternative and the Quick Time Alternative?

There's a converter to decode them to wav and turn wavs into AMR files.

gaekwad2 that's not what I want (I have one of those tools btw), I want to LISTEN to them before I send them to my mobile the same way I listen to MP3s (my n-gage also uses them )

How about CONVERTING them to wav files and than listening to them in winamp. You can't listen to them the way they are unless you sent them to your phone.

Maybe the answer comes a bit late, but better than nothing I guess.
The only way to actually listen to AMR files instead of converting them to WAVs before is Siemens' Mobile Phone Manager.

nope... foobar has a plugin for it and media player classic is also able to play them if the Nokia codecs are installed...

Assuming the codecs are installed, have you tried adding the amr extension to any of in_dshow, in_mp4, or in_mp3 extension lists? Any chance of zipping up one of these amr files and providing a link?

DirectShow might play them if you use FFDShow as FFmpeg will decode and enode them if you compile it with the AMR libraries. I will attempt to play the sample at home with FFDShow-tryouts.

It just occured to me that the in_mplayer plugin might play them as well. I think I still have a copy at home so I will try that as well and report back on the results tomorrow.

I tried playing that file at home and was unable to. Winamp didn't report a length, MPC said unable to render file. I'm pretty sure that you will need some sort of source filter to attempt DirectShow playback. I couldn't find my copy of in_mplayer so I can't report whether that worked. FFmpeg was able to decode it though.

You might be able to force playback with Graph Edit or something similar but I am not familiar with those types of programs.

I can actually get latest Media Player Classic (MPC) with QT Alternative to play that sample AMR.

However, I can't get it to play in any of Winamp, Foobar, VLC, WMP, etc.

At a guess, the Nullsoft in_qt plugin would be able to play them, if only there was an option in its (non-existent) config to specify file extensions.

In the meantime, I've been trying to find a compatible DirectShow Filter.
It looks like Dicas Mpegable filter handles amr, but it also handles MP4 and AAC, which is no good for me because there's no option to just use it for amr only (Dicas Mpegable is old and doesn't support newer avc/h.264 mp4, hence the need to use haali splitter and ffdshow for those instead).

I found this:
http://www.medialooks.com/products/d...me_filter.html

but aren't sure if I trust it or if it'll even work.... mainly because
1) I also tried their Flash DS Filter recently, and that didn't work whatsover
2) it says "Requires QuickTime 7.0 runtime to be installed" - and there's not a hope of me installing that p.o.s. (plus, other than trying it, there's no way of knowing if it'll work with QT Alt instead), and
3) it doesn't appear to be freeware either, heh.

This installer contains InterVideo QuickTime Source DirectShow Filter, and makes actions for it registration (call of regsvr32.exe) and changes in registry "HKCR\Media Type\Extensions\.amr" for associating of this filter with AMR-files. For working it needs installed QuickTime (or QuickTime Alternative).

Using of this DirectShow filter may be illegal (because it contain file from InterVideo WinDVD package) so use it on your own risk.

Yay! Excellent work BugMaster

Yup, after installing that DS Filter, AMR now plays fine via in_dshow.

Delete it? Nah, here's a mirror :-)

another solution (completely legal and freeware):

- install SPOTxde Player (freeware)
- add ;AMR to Extension list for Nullsoft DirectShow Decoder in Winamp Preferences -> Plugins -> Input
- now Winamp is able to play .amr files (AMR-NB & AMR-WB)

PS: this program steals some extensions (like .amr and .mp4), so it's better to restore the file associatons to Winamp

2DJ Egg:

Thanks for posting about our product.

I have a few comments though.

1) Our Flash DirectShow Source Filter still remains in beta. Due to the restrictions of the Flash ActiveX API, we haven't been able to take this product to a release state yet. Sorry about that. We are working on it and doing our best.

2) The QuickTime DirectShow Source Filter does require QuickTime Player to be installed - but you don't need to run it.

3) The latest version is free for WMP and Winamp. I will provide an update with a download link soon.

An updated version of QuickTime Source is available. It now supports Winamp. You can download it from the URL below:

It's a DirectShow filter. After installation, run Winamp > Preferences > Plugins > Input > Nullsoft DirectShow Decoder > add ;AMR to the extension list.

Thanks, everyone, for this thread. I'd like to add another solution for those who want to simply convert an .AMR file to mp3 and be done with it.

PLEASE NOTE, I am giving a link for some freeware I found via a Google search, but I can only say it worked for me to convert one small (~200k) .AMR file once. Since I don't always trust sites that peddle freeware, trying to profit from SEO or whathaveyou, I *ALWAYS* run this software in a VM or sandbox (this one worked good for me under Sandboxie), to avoid risk of malware infections and whatnot.

http://www.softsea.com/download/AMR-...Converter.html

Again, this worked great for me, but try at your own risk, and I strongly recommend you always use a sandbox for these kind of activities.

Have fun
