Few questions

I have a few questions about SHOUTcast about what its features are, I can't seem to find anything that tells you what it can do as far as broadcasting a station.

1.) I was wondering if shoutcast had a plugin that supports live DJ chat, kind of like a vent server but it broadcasts threw the radio stream (like 3 or 4 DJs talking to eachother).

2.) I was also wondering about the go live button, It wont let me press the Push to talk button it just goes straight to my mic and thats all people can hear is me talking and not a voice over (music faded in the background).
My sound card is a HT Omega Claro Striker 7.1.

3.) Another issue I had was we cant get more than 1 DJ on, that isnt a big deal but it is enoying when there is no music straming for more than 10 seconds everyone connected to the station gets disconnected. Is there any way to fix this?

1/ No, best to use something like skype and stream it.

2/ you need to use the all you hear feature in your windows mixer to use music and voice. this tutorial might help,

If its vista give up now and start looking at external mixers or soundcards.
http://www.streamsolutions.co.uk/fla...als/Decks_mic/

3/ shoutcast only supports 1 dj at a time, i would suggest adding a back up file so the connected listeners are not dumped,

The new sc_trans supports multi dj but it is in beta.

sc_trans 2.0 beta is the future, it supports multi OS
including vista.
There are no "gaps" in your broadcast when switching djs.
it is sticky'd at the top of this forum.

So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish.

Extract the Win32 folder from the zip file.

Extract the playlist_win32 file into the extracted Win32 folder.

Extract the sc_trans_demo file into the extracted Win32 folder.

Populate the playlist_win32 file with full path to your mp3 files and the full name of the mp3 files and save it. This file can be edited in notepad. If you only want to test with one file at first, then enter it twice, as sc_trans ignores the first entry in the playlist file.

Edit the sc_trans_demo file in notepad to reflect your dnas settings and save it. Make sure you also change the path to where your playlist_win32 file is.

Drag and drop the sc_trans_demo file over to the sc_trans executable.

sc_trans should startup, connect to dnas, and start sending data.

For everyone else out there, this pretty much works like the linux sc_trans, except on Windows.

Doesn't do that anymore. One file should work fine.

edit:

Never mind, you are correct. This is no longer a problem.

This is a problem if the first line of the playlist file is blank and there is an entry on the second line. However, if you have more than one entry actual entry and the first line remains blank, then it continues to work.

edit2:

I'm nuts. Just shoot me now. Everything works as promised ... I had a space before the drive letter one of the entries and did not notice it.

OK ...

This zip file for drop 4 (sc_trans_beta_drop_4_2008_12_10.zip), contains a folder, sc_trans_beta_drop_4_2008_12_10.

The folder, sc_trans_beta_drop_4_2008_12_10, contains a Win32 folder, and the files playlist_win32 and sc_trans_demo amongst numerous other folders and files. The other folders and files do not matter for running on Windows. These three items bolded above need to be extracted into the same folder. This folder can be named what ever you want and it can be located where ever you want. Just make sure everything gets extracted to it.

Once extracted to a folder, either move sc_trans.exe to the root folder from the Win32 folder or move the playlist_win32 and sc_trans_demo into the Win32 folder. Alternatively, do what ever floats your boat, the overall goal is to get sc_trans.exe, playlist_win32, and sc_trans_demo all in the same folder.

Now you need to edit the playlist file to contain your music. Start be opening the playlist_win32 file with notepad and deleting everything in it. Open winamp and drop your music into the playlist editor. Have winamp save the playlist as a m3u file. Open that m3u file with notepad and copy everything in the m3u file and paste it into the playlist_win32 document and save the playlist_win32 file under the same name. The playlist_win32 file, when opened with a text editor, should look something like what is below ... except for now it should be populated with your music and your path to that music. In the example below, I've got all my music on my K drive, in a folder called Music, I added every file in the HDA 2008 folder (I've got all my music sorted by album in individual folders if that matters and/or if anyone wanted to know how I track it all, which I am guessing is no one).

code:

Next, you need to edit the sc_trans_demo.conf file. At a minimum, you need to set the encoder options, network options, metadata control, playlist control, and other for the variables listed below.

encoder options
encoder = mp3 (for mpeg layer 3 stream) or aacp (for aac+)
bitrate = 96000 is the example for 96k. Take your stream bitrate and multiply by 1,000. For example, 128k = 128 * 1000 = 128000
leave sample rate and channels alone unless you want something different. Change channel to 1 for mono if desired. Change the channels to 0 if you like listening to the voices in your head.

network options
serverip = set to 127.0.0.1 if dnas is on the same computer. If on a different computer within the same LAN, then use the internal network address of the computer dnas is on. If hosted, then use the address your host gives.
serverport = broadcast port. If you run vanilla SHOUTcast, then leave it at 8000, otherwise change it to your port.
password = the password you set in dnas for the encoder.

metadata control
streamtitle = change to what you want your stream to be called.
streamurl = change to your webpage if you have one or what ever you like ... or leave it alone.
genre = set to what you play.
public = set to 0 to not list in the yp; 1 to list in the yp (0 = not public; 1 = public)

playlist control
playlistfile = change to the full path and name of the playlist file you made. If using the example above, the name is the same, you just need to change the path.
shuffle = set to 0 for no shuffle; set to 1 to shuffle.
xfade = set to 0 for no crossfade or set to any other reasonable number for that length, in seconds, of a crossfade.

other
adminport = port admin logs in on
adminuser = name admin logs in as
adminpassword = password admin uses to log in

---------------------

All other settings are optional and do not need to be used for basic SHOUTcasting.

Once changes have been made to the sc_trans_demo file, then save it and exit. Click that demo file and drag it over to the sc_trans.exe executable and release the mouse button. Sc_trans will start and connect to DNAS (if running) using the supplied configuration, which points to the created playlist.

Alright I did everything but when I drag the demo to the sc_trans application I get a "Panic" window that pops up and says "logger could not open file c:\sc_trans.log" It will only let me click ok then the application closes out.

Would it be better for me to just wait until the full version comes out instead of a beta? I miss the way I could just start my server and winamp with the addon and everything starts working fine .

Edit: Nevermind its running the log and everything now i have a new problem.. here is my config file..

Could you post some of the rest of the log that shows the repeated connect/disconnects?

The error is a weird one. I've seen it occasionally myself, but only when I test sc_trans on a PPC Mac, and it usually clears up after three or four attempts.

Here's the full explanation:

When sc_trans determines that it's time to send the track's metadata to sc_serv, it opens a socket and issues an HTTP style request. It then waits to see if it gets an HTTP style OK or FAIL (code 200 or 400). The error you are seeing only occurs if, while waiting for the response, sc_trans gets a socket error.

Now here's where it gets odd. Unless the network connection is screwed up, the error you're seeing should never occur. I could sit here and just tell you that your config is wrong, except that I've seen it myself on our office systems, but only occasionally and only on the PPC Mac. I'm still puzzling over it.

I'm wondering if your station (from a listener perspective) is functioning correctly. The continuous metadata updates are bad, but don't actually generate an error from the listener's perspective. As a listener, everything seems to be running normally.

Do you see normal behavior if you connect to your station as a listener?

Nope no one can even connect to the server anymore I just now noticed this...
Well when I got my new modem from comcast all my ports were reset so I had to re forward them. I guess that this is when everything went wrong? I cant even connect to the server useing my static IP with the DJ tool but I can connect if it says local host but even then no listeners can connect.

Sounds like your problems are larger than what you are seeing in sc_trans.

The nak error on your dnas logs means posrt are not forwarded properly, or there is software that is blocking you ... which most likely why no one can connect to your stream.

You can check your router/modem setup at www.portforward.com ... but what software might be blocking you, well that is on you as we don't know what you have installed.

I can say that, like XP SP2, Vista does have a firewall running by default. I've used Vista for all of 10 minuets, so I really can't help you with that.

The DJ systems has been completely redone for beta drop 4.

For each DJ you want to support you must have three values defined in your config file. djpassword, djlogin, djpriority.
For example, let's say you have three DJs named Manny, Moe and Jack. You would have the following in your sc_trans config

djpassword_0=foobar
djlogin_0=Manny
djpriority_0=10
djpassword_1=barfoo
djlogin_1=Moe
djpriority_1=10
djpassword_2=goaway
djlogin_2=Jack
djpriority_2=10

Second, you must schedule access times for the DJs in your calendar.xml file. The trivial case is to let them access any time at all

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
<eventlist>
<event type="dj">
<dj archive="0">Manny</dj>
<calendar starttime="00:00:00" />
</event>
<event type="dj">
<dj archive="0">Moe</dj>
<calendar starttime="00:00:00" />
</event>
<event type="dj">
<dj archive="0">Jack</dj>
<calendar starttime="00:00:00" />
</event>
</eventlist>

That's it for your side. On the DJ's side, the password in their config file must be a colon seperated combination of their name and password

password=Manny:foobar

The docs.txt file in the drop package has more information. Look at item #12 in the file.

Sweet guys thanks, you have been more than helpfull! =]

One thing I noticed though. This doesnt show up in the error log at all but the sc_trans randomly Disconnects from the server every so often and sometimes it doesnt reconnect I have to close out of it and re-open it. Im running it on Windows Vista Home Premium.

If it's not appearing in the logs, then how do you know it is happening? Try to tune in and hear nothing?

If that is it, do you have the playlist set to repeat if that is even an option somewhere (sorry, on a computer I can't install to and don't have sc_trans on it)?

The disconnects are socket errors. You could just have a flakey connection to your server. Even if you have a good cable modem service, it's not unusual for a connection to get dropped a few times a day. Most of those systems are designed with the web browsing user in mind,where a momentary break would go unnoticed. According to your logs, sc_trans is reconnecting as it is supposed to. If the disconnect outage is larger than the buffer on the server then you'll notice some sort of glitch on the player end.

The metadata error messages are bad. It appears the Windows Vista has the same socket anomaly that Mac PPC does. Unfortunately the offical AOL line is "Vista unsupported" so I can't get a machine to debug this on. I'm clearly going to have to mask off this error in the next drop. It's not critical that it be treated as an error anyhow, it was just me being a bit anal on the error checking front (and now it bit me in the ass... ha ha get it??)

so to shorten what you said down, the disconnects are just a normal internet connection that sometimes drops?

I blame comcast, their connection throttels. Then again I am also just paying for normal cabel internet and not a business line.

Eh I just realized it Disconnects about the same timespan every time, estimates about 2 n a half songs then it disconnects. I let it reconnect and it just disconnected a second time.

At this point all I can do is speculate. Since no one else has reported a similar problem, it could be your cable connect. Perhaps comcast is monitoring your upload, sees the continuous stream and is cutting it off. It may sound far-fetched, but a few years ago Cablevision throttled me back from 30MB to 300kb because they detected "BitTorrent activity". It took a lot of begging to get my service restored to full speed.
