Seems he has a new hobby to entertain himself with now does it.

Hmmmmmmmmm

Back shortly....

consider it done Lynx.

Oh how I hate this system.

Though to be honest, I don't really see any major damage done by this - review.

Lynx....I told Admin about Alok back in March and was told he was banned. Maybe things were inadvertently changed when they changed to the public review system....I don't know, but I will let Admin know about him. *sigh* I thought we were rid of him.

You know here is a thought...

maybe winamp.com could use encryption in the ZIP.

A simple Password by the author that created it. The same one used to submit it.

Then we'd have alot less hacks. Only the base skin would be un-encrypted....

That is a kewl idea. (LOL)

yeah, but see it wouldn't, because (I haven't tried it, so I don't know which would happen) either winamp wouldn't be able to read the skin, or it would, and you could just extract the files from the temp directory the files are extracted to.

Granted, if the second were the case, most rippers wouldn't have a clue where to find things....

I seem to remeber some bone head coming in here a long time back claiming to make his skins un-ripable cos he was password locking the zip, claiming it was totaly secure.

Fair enuff, to anyone who tried to break it using winzip or summat, it was fairly secure, however soon as winamp sniffed it, everything extracted as normal, bitmaps into the temp directory, needless to say within minutes of his unbreakable skin being posted, it was posted back with most of his bitmaps scribbled on , thus once and for all proving the fact, don't argue with a skin lover , you will never win LOL

that simply ain't possible. Since winamp has to know the password that protects the skin. And since there are many diffrent skinners around you would have many passwords. And to put them all in the program would mean everytime new skinners join the game of skinning with their own passwords, the list of passwords within winamp has to be updated.
So it just would not work.

Encryption:

Either way some kind of bitwise encryption could work whether pwd protected or just a wrapper encryption. If you used say winamp (the word) to encrypt the bitmaps. Upon submission the images are encrypted bitwise using the word, and client winamp.exe uses the bitwise ecryption to reassemble the bitmaps into a usable temp bitmap. Sure someone can take the temp bmps and make them into skins. However, it would happen a lot less. As you said they are just to stupid.

Or the password on the ZIP-file could be added by the reviewer, so that no-one except the reviewer knows the password and he can use the same password everytime. That way only the passwords of the reviewers is needed.

But then again, there are little proggies that can filter out the passwordprotection of ZIP-files.

encryption

how about a digtal signature on the winammp that cant be duplicated encrypted in the bitmap ( dont ask me how ) so that if the bitmaps are changed w/out the computer having the digital signature would change the bitmaps to look like its saying something in the color IE: this skin is a ripp off and im a looser. could you construct something that is with in the bitmap image that makes the bitmap look the way it does? something like a structring program that needs a digital sig to be changed w/o messin it up? so that when being changed it would mess up the structure and make it look stupid or say something like i said or even just erase its self?

No, no, no. That would screw up all the beginning skinners who work off of someone else's skin. No more skins if they have nothing to start with. Anywho, most rippers, as I stated previously, do nothing to the skins.

i got it how about a little quirk in the program so that when its uploaded it scrambles it self. you could signature encode it. so that when you upload it it will not be effected.
or buttons dissapear, now that would be cool.
that would totaly piss people of and bring down the skin reviews as we know it! j/k
anyways i imagine one of the skilled people on the forum here cold build a anti ripp prog that coul be d/l by anybody ( maybe even a skining prog ) so that it can only be uploaded by the same indavidual. thats easy and probaly writen by the correct individual woauld be very small, i imagine less then 80kb. thats something worth checking into.
and about your beging skinners that work of others well, they can contact the person that made the skin and get a de-bugged version.

If someone realllllllly badly wanted to rip you they would no matter what method of stopping them you employ, I mean if you were so desperate you could always run the encrypted skin, take a screen shot of it in action and use that to grab what you want.

flatmatt is right as well, most skinners, I speak for myself here as well, learnt how to skin by looking at other peoples work, tweaking bitmaps to see what happens, damd it's almost the first thing I do with a lot of skins is look in the temp directory to see how things are done, especialy if there is a neat bit of animation or something in the skin, Ampburners V-max is a good example, I loved what he did with the volume, and had to see how he animated it, so I was checking out the bitmaps as soon as it was wrapped onto my winamp.

The best way to defeat rippers is to remain vigilant, report rips, plus I'd love to see a rippers hall of shame, show some of these ripping buggers up for what they really are. Would you think twice about stealing someones hard work if you knew you were gonna be called a thief in front of 1000's of people?
