Nostalgia Skin-in-progress thread

I was debating whether or not it's worth starting a thread for my barely-started Where's Waldo skin, and I decided it's not worth it. So I'm making one.

Actually, I figured I'd set it up as a thread for anybody to announce or show off their contest skin. If you think it'll get too crowded, feel free to start on for your own skin, but I doubt it will be.

Here's Where's Waldo so far. It's very crude because I'm new at photoshop, and because none of the buttons are skinned. Compiling book images is a much slower process than compiling 8-bit game graphics! Hopefully it starts looking better once I work some better-looking stuff (or functional stuff) into it.

Thought I'd show what I have so far on my He-Man skin, but honestly it's really bad. I may scrap this one.

What do you mean it's really bad? Apart from laying the background, you've barely done anything on it

Keep at it - it could be good. Looks like a skin that dimichan would do something great with.

I mean I just threw everything on there that I had, and it has no real layout to it. I'm also having trouble getting decent screen caps from the original show..

Luigi: It's too early to comment, but I like the idea (ambitious!). Are you thinking of evil places to hide Waldo yet?

tydogg: Eeee! The Main background looks fantastic! I certainly hope you don't scrap it. The Main and Eq backgrounds may not currently mesh, but a small, thin border between the two would solve that, methinks.

I know finding screencaps of any 80s cartoon is frustrating because they're always so low-quality. Have you tried here or here?

Tydogg: That design looks awesome! With a little cleverness, you can merge those backgrounds, I think. Don't give up! ^_^

NiS: I should hide Waldo in the Minibrowser. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA. But seriously, that's sad. I'm not gonna tell any of you where Waldo will be. I think when I add him in, I'm gonna not put him in the preview images here. Only on the final skin.

Dark Ninja: What does CB stand for? I can't seem to place it.

Here's another image of the main window... looking Waldo-y yet? (No, that's not him. Those are Waldo Watchers)

Thanks guys
I have tried those sites, not in santiago, thanks, but the pics are soooo tiny. Most of the main was created from a grainy tiny little picture and a ton of the stamp tool. I might change it from a He-Man skin to a Skeletor one, as he seems to be easier to find.

LuigiHann: are you going to hide other stuff like the books and the keys, too? Would make it very cool, I think.

Heres the beginnings of mine. I'm not sure what I'll do with the rest of the background yet. I just kind of liked how they looked walking around the sidewalk.

edit // Luigi, let me assure you that it was not my intention to have it look so simmilar to yours.

k_rock, the characters are bit hard to make out, I would give them an outline or something. I think I recognize the show but the name escapes me. What is it?

El-ArGeNtO: thanks, I've found some decent resolution cels on a german site, so there might be some good animations

Dark Ninja: Tres cool idea! My sister and I had similar-looking CBs when we were kids, although I have nooooo idea what brand they were. All I remember is they had big red buttons which you could use to screech out Morse Code and that there was a transmission range of about 30 feet. I'm not an expert on smoothing corners, but perhaps if the light grey highlights on the bottom on the circle weren't quite as light, the edges would blend in better with the black behind it (if that makes any sense at all). Of course, you might lose the 3D effect. Oh, BTW, I really like your Warning skin. I hope you finish that one too!

Luigi: Have fun with hiding Waldo (among other things). I can think of a few evil places to put him . . . . Looking at your skin, I realize I've never read a Where's Waldo book. What's wrong with me?! I do think I've seen some Where's Waldo posters though, and they looked terribly cluttered and convoluted to me. I like your approach so far with this - it's got quite a few elements, but it's not too crowded (you could probably even add more things), which I think is difficult to pull off in a classic format. The images are relatively sharp as well - thumbs up for that.

k_rock: A nice start. I'm already into this skin 'cause I see Rocko. Hooray! I agree with tydogg about an outline on the characters. I'd also think about making the sidewalk look a bit smaller and more in proportion with the size of your characters. I think it may make them look bigger, even if you don't actually change their size.

Unfortunately, I don't feel like working on the skin at all lately. Earlier tonight I bought an accordion off of eBay (it should be here in a couple days), I have a book to read before I start college in about 20 days, and shrinking and dragging Where's Waldo graphics seems pretty tasking. I may finish it, but we'll have to see... =/

These might be an obvious suggestion (forgive my pre-breakfast brain) but how about He-Man's sword? You could stick it in each background and animate some magic sparkly around it (but, you know, a more manly version of magic sparkly). Maybe other smaller magic items?

I'm glad you're sticking with this. Your characters look excellent for being cut out and shrunk down. And I still love the background.

Thanks I have considered the sword, but I need something to use as a slider, and nothing works that is able to pass over the sword without looking like absolute garbage.

Hmm . . . I dunno if this would be possible, but you could try putting the base of the sword below the eq bars and the tip above it, then make the slider a glint going up and down the sword. Sounds easier than it probably is. If only the sword wasn't so oddly shaped . . . . maybe try skeletor's staff instead.

Sorry these aren't original suggestions - I've actually only seen a handful of episodes! Such was the curse of growing up with Loservision.
