Windows Live Messenger (MSN Messenger 9.0)

Ok, so the beta has started, and from what I am hearing, it is really hard to get into. So hard, in fact, that they are giving out invites to the beta. I have 2. Who wants them?

Just tell me why you want it, and if you really use MSN messenger, the only reason is because I don't want to waste the invites.

Every time I'm on the computer, I'm on MSN. So yeah, I use it a lot. But why's the big deal about it? Is it that cool?

I'm on MSN 100% of the time I'm on a computer (which is about 90% of my day) I'll take one if its available =)

/that and you still owe me from the one special night we had together

//edit The reason I want one is I've beta tested messenger for a while and couldn't get in this time

MSN is my primary mode of talking with quite a few people. Even at work. That having been said, I don't think I could live without Messenger Plus and the mess.be patch.

(Unless, of course, this version isn't annoying like every version since 5 or so)

if it'd come without ads or links to other MS products, I'd want it.. But without it, I'll stick to MSN7.5plus and a patch for the ad

There is going to be a Windows Live Messenger Plus Plugin soon, but no word on when it will be released: http://msgpluslive.net . Also, the mess.be patch would be awesome.

I will say, that this version of messenger is really nice. There are some annoyances (which pertain to the programs want to push MSN video), but other than that, it is a solid app with a sleek new design and some really cool new stuff.

So, yeah, d0rk and alida, check your PMs.

/edit, oh yeah, I forgot. there is a list of new features in Windows Live Messenger here

If you used trillian, couldn't you log into more than one account simultaneously?

Don't you mean... Windows Live Messenger 8 Beta?
Anyways, it's awsome, way better than MSN Messenger 7.5, but it does suck that Plus! no longer works, although about the main reason I use Plus! is that I hate when contacts have long nicknames, so I always renamed them, but Messenger 8 has that option itself now, so all is good, lol.

Firstly, I don't use Trillian because I really don't like it, and secondly, I don't [i]want[/u] lots of accounts.

If that was a good enough solution, I could use Gaim for it

I don't care for any of the standalone messengers. I have AIM accounts, Y! accounts, and MSN accounts, so it'd be a pain in the ass for me to have three separate messenger programs installed at once. I use Trillian Pro, and I quite like it.

When Gaim has full support (audio & video) for both MSN Messenger and iChat then I might get excited about IM’s.

If Sean Egan keeps fucking over the Gaim-vv project people that could be some time

I think they were aiming to have it in the final version of Gaim 2.0 (pretty slick beta out now) but he changed the API to better accomodate the GTalk (Jingle) voice stuff, breaking the abstracted Gaim-vv system that he probably should have been using (apparently).

The primary Gaim-vv dude appeared pretty pissed on his blog, but I think he's just slogging through now (he originally quit outright).

2k is likely to use more resources (unless you hand-optimise it), not less.

lol, that's hilareous. Windows XP is wayyy better on resources than Win 98. Sure it actually requires more, but XP manages what resources you have, better, so in the long run, it performs better.
I installed XP on 2 very low powered comps, which both originally had Win 98, and they sucked. Installed XP on them, and they were rocking machines.

The laptop that my brother in law gave me originally had 98se on it. It's a 700Mhz Pentium III (100Mhz FSB), and it had 64MB RAM in it (until I put a new 256MB card in it). I installed XP SP2 on it, and believe it or not, it runs rather well. It's kinda slow because of the sloth-like FSB, but it's a hell of a lot more stable than 98se could ever hope to be. Of course, turning off all the eye-candy and setting it to Windows Classic Theme helps quite a bit.

Yeah, the one thing that XP will require more than 98 is memory. If you have a low amount of memory (64 or maybe 128MB), it'll probably perform like a dog. Upgrade to 256MB and all should be well.

Hi Duane Jeffers,

Maybe I'm late, but if you do have an invite to spare, I'd really appreciate it

I work in Kuwait and keep in touch with my brothers who are not computer literate through MSN. From what I've read, the sharing of folders would be really ideal for us to share pictures as I have a hard time telling them how to attach pictures in mails!

Looking forward to an in invite and when I do get an invite, I'll first let my brother have one and then would not mind sharing the rest with forumers in need!

Thanks & Cheers
