Car accident...

This passed Friday I was involved in a car accident. No injuries on either side. Only a good dent and a messed up alignment.

Toyotanation is where I spend most of my online time now. It's a pretty awesome forum for Toyota/Lexus/Scion.

Here's my story and I'll stick with it...

There's construction on the road we were on. I was in left lane and he was in the right. It had one of those redirect deals for both lanes. As we got to where the construction zone ended and went back to regular he kept merging as I went straight.
This doesn't make sense; the damage is on your left side, but you were on his left and he was on your right. Did he merge in front of you (right to left), and then continue to merge across to your left whilst braking heavily?

Holy crap Deeder. I'm glad to hear everyone made it out un-injured. From the sounds of things you can get it all fixed on someone elses dime as well!

I was in the right lane he was in the left... Lol

Fixed...

He drives a 93 Toyota Pickup Xtra cab. Good looking truck actually. He took no damage except maybe a scratch on the bumper. I was already planning to replace the fender because of other damage. I just didn't tell the shop that.

i wish you well in overcoming your circumstance. i am pleased that no one was harmed. welldone.

a coincidence; a young one of my kin also endured a recent episode of moving metal and speed gone awry. a swerve to miss a deer and a roll over. he, as well the operator of the vehicle, escaped only just mildly rattled, thankfully. objective details are elusive, especially considering the subjective-ness one must account for when permitting anything from the direction of that lot, either way thanks are indeed in order. cheers to the unscathed, those lucky few.

It is now declared totaled. I'm keeping the car and they're going to give me $1000. The estimated repair costs are $1800.

I'm going to fix it up. It just needs a couple of suspension parts and maybe a control arm and alignment. ~$300 for new parts.

Overall, you're in pretty good shape considering all the circumstances. Any vehicle trip where you can walk out alive is a good one.

Can you find a good used door and fender?

One of our cars is continually costing me money in maintenance. I could sell it for around $5,000 on the second-hand market, yet it's fully insured for $11,000 (agreed value, not market value). Hopefully someone will rear-end me soon ( ), or maybe I'll "accidentally" run it straight into a tree, causing damage so extensive that the insurer writes it off.

I can easily find a door and fender at the junkyard. About $60 for the fender and I haven't looked at doors yet. I'm just looking at the alignment and suspension for now. It drives fine except if I take right hand corners too fast.

Looks like the suspension and alignment is all it needs. Maybe $400 for everything!! I'm kinda excited about getting that $1k check.

Although it might be tempting to make the $1K into found money, it would probably be best if you kept it a transportation-specific gift card. Figure out what the car most needs and use the money to keep things reliable and safe when it comes to transportation.

The only things that were damaged was the alignment, suspension and fender. Alignment and suspension are the important things.

I finally got the check yesterday. I don't think I like dealing with StateFarm very much. Feels like I have to tell them they need to take the next step.

I ordered new control arms and 4 strut assemblies. And I need to replace the windshield in order to pass inspection and get my "restored salvage" title.

So far I'm about $715 in not including inspection and alignment.

I have found that with the two insurance companies I have dealt with too. They just don't want to give you anything unless you nag them. And then, if you ever miss paying them the way they miss doing what you need them to do, they either charge you more or cancel your coverage. We must be on time every time with what we're expected to do, and we're expected to do it without reminder. The companies don't seem to work that way when it's their turn to take responsibility .

Since you've already spent $715 of your allotted $1000, maybe selling the repairable write-off and buying another car (with the sale cash and your $1K) would've been an idea.

Here's one I found in a couple of minutes: http://www.usedcars.com/vehicledetai...3776&radius=50 It's $2K but I'm sure there are cars out there around the $1.5K mark that are better than your current... vehicle.

Maybe next time.

I'm actually closer to $830 now after buying a power steering hose and new windshield. All I need now is to get that restored salvage title and alignment. That should be sometime in the next couple of weeks.
