Yes, I'm starting another classic skin

Pushing my mad photoshopping skills to the limit here... if any of you guys with madder skillz have any suggestions on techniques for my semi-cartoon but still wooden bar there, lemme know. I don't want it quite photorealistic, but I still want it to be believably solid and 3-dimentional-ish. I have the anime Trigun in mind as I make it, but I don't know if I'm really going to use that or not. I'm just kinda wingin' it here.

Not that I have particularly great photoshop skillz, but I suggest making the bar less perfectly straight (ie. try and put some minor flaws in it, and I wouldn't give it such a high-contrast, distinct, and again - perfectly straight- outline. Other than that, it looks like a terrific start. The wanted poster looks great.

That's a pretty good point... I'm slowly figuring out ways to kind of "battle damage" just about everything in the skin. Thanks for commenting. It's sad when the "HOW DO MAKE SKIN" threads seem to be getting more action than mine

Luigi, unless I turn the brightness on my screen up all the way, I can't make out the bar at all and even then, it's still hard to make out.

Maybe my screen is just screwed up or something becaus I'm not joking when I say it looks like a black background with a wanted sign on it to me.

i can just barely make it out...definitely too dark.

use adobe gamma which is installed with ps in the windows control panel to fix your screen.

Agreed, it's really dark. I've got my screen calibrated with Adobe Gamma Loader, so I can't make my brightness any higher.

Alright, I darkened my monitor until my first preview looked really dark, and then brightened my skin up to even brighter than it looked before. I hope this solves the problem... Well, I know I may sound annoyed, but you guys pointing it out early on is better than me not knowing until later, so I'm greatful. I'm definately glad I found out before I started trying to fix the pattern for the eq bars...

Yeah, everyone is different, so I figure having it look a little bit brighter is better than having half the people not see anything...

My old monitor had brightness and contrast buttons right on it. I don't know if your computer has this or not, but I went to display properties => settings => advanced and then to the "color" tab, and messed with the contrast. I hope my skin shows up a little bit now, since I've brightened it 3 times...

This may sound stupid, but where in the Control Panel is that Adobe Gamma regulator?

Wow. good job Been a while since i've seen and decent non-skinamp trigun skins.

I like where you're going with the "bar" theme, i'm guessing the eq sliders will be bullet holes?

There used to be more stuff, but hey, links die over the years.

Thanks. I'm trying to stay out of the "picture skin" category, by treating it like one of my game skins, except of course this is all from scratch. And... yeah, more bulletholes. But hey, it fits.

Woops, don't let me forget the eq/pl buttons before I submit it.

I just saw this thread, so I'm coming in a bit late here, but I'd add some knots to your wood for more realism. It looks a bit too perfect. You might also try selecting some areas of your wood with the wand tool set to a fairly high tolerance and slightly change the hue and brightness for better looking wood. You can disregard if you're too far already, though.

Yeah, I kinda thought of that, but it's a bit late now, and I was hoping that the foreground objects kind of obsure that enough. Thanks though.

And thanks Dlink, I like how the stool came out.

This came along great!! You're cementing my personal opinion that you're one of the most interesting and fun winamp skinners ever. There have been quite a few 'theme' skins like this in the past, but they so often fall short when it comes to certain harder-to-skin components. That's one of the things I like about you as a skinner - your skins tend to be well-designed right down to the small details. Of course, that doesn't mean that I can't find things to criticise

-The gradients don't look quite right on the guns on the MAIN. They look too matte, and too smooth when compared to the other parts of the guns (eg. the handles, which are more textured). For some reason, the pistol on the PL looks better. Try putting some more shine on the top of the gradients to make them look a bit more metallic. Or even adda tiny bit of noise texture to them, by messing the pixels on the TEXT.BMP background up just a fraction.

-You can definitely do better with the buttons on the ML.

-That's an odd easter egg. Is it meant to be like that?

-The PRESET pressed state is barely disinguishable from the normal state.

-The angle of the numbers seems quite wrong to me - and they don't look good because of it, IMO. Of course, you're not helped by the fact that they have to be aligned horizontally, whereas the "Wanted" and "Vash the Stampede" writing is written on an upwards slant. If I were you, I'd consider tilting the whole poster till it's less slanted, so that this problem is not so pronounced.....or making the numbers themselves less slanted

-it's not a major thing, but the cbutton labels (actually, only the pause label, really) seem a bit uninspired compared to the rest.

-That deep red "Trigun" title clashes with the rest of the skin in my opinion. I don't know what Trigun is though, and maybe the title is supposed to be that particular shade of red. I would definitely consider toning it down (either darker or just less saturation) just a couple of shades though.

Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny.

http://www.bishounen.net/trigun/op/trigun.jpg The logo should look ssomething like this (and it's those bulletholes I added in the easter egg) but I think I'll tweak it a bit because it really doesn't look like that right now. Thanks for all the ideas, I'll probably use several of them

Well, i was planning on doing a cursor or too, but microangelo won't let me use it for free anymore, so i'd say the skin is hypothetically done.

I'm not a big fan of the way the media library is skinable... it stifles my creativity But I think I did nicely enough.

Bah, I'm always too late with my suggestions:
The stool looks kind of blurry cause the outlines on the legs are vague.
Your min/max/exit and eq, pl buttons look a bit blurry too.

Big thumbs up for the skin as a whole. Stillwater's right about you being creative all the way down to the details.

You should. At first the "layers" and "leyer set" concepts were really off-putting, but they (and other things) make skinning waaaaay easier. Makes me wish I had started using it a lot earlier so I could be making awesome skins before everyone stopped using winamp
And sorry about that Tydogg, next time I'll wait for you
